As a noob, did you go to a Q and A and understand it?

I went to a noob Q and A to try to get some info about SL. It didn't start great: Someone asked why freaking is prohibited in some areas. Being eager to understand what is going on, I asked what freaking was. The result was one useful answer, one answer from the non-noob who asked the freaking question and was obviously SO happy someone in the audience was clueless enough to ask this question, and a lot of comments that I let fly by as I attempted to become invisible for a few moments (it didn't work). Then came the real questions about SL, which were thoroughly answered by the very nice NCI people. Unfortunately, their answers almost always made no sense to me. A couple of times I asked for an explanation of their explanation, which resulted in a very friendly and equally incomprehensible explanation. Asking for an explanation of an explanation of an explanation seemed to be asking too much, even for these nice, helpful people.

Let's ignore (please, let's) the freaking question and my failure to understand this slang in a new context. I'm sure I will soon get so used to looking stupid that I won't even notice.

I am aware I know zero about computers or programming and generally have no idea what is going in SL. But are these Q and As usually helpful to true noobs? If not, what is? (I would really appreciate kind answers to that - I realize there are some funny, non-so-kind answers that will probably come to mind, but I got enough of these with my question about freaking. ) I'm now wondering if any of the NCI classes will be of any help if the Q and A made no sense. Is there anything more basic than the Q and As? Are the NCI classes better or are there better non-NCI classes somewhere?

I'm not sure if TUi has any classes to welcome newbies into SL, or if they only do building classes. But you can check if they have a kind of newbie Q&As. I don't think TUi people are better teachers than NCI people, that not. But I think hearing things from two different sources may help getting them remembered perhaps?

Otherwise, maybe try another Q&A from NCI in a couple of days, and see if it helps when you go a second time?

Not sure if I can add anything more constructive.

And what did the guy mean with freaking?

I've been in SL since December 2006, and I've never heard of freaking either.

Maybe someone else here might know what freaking is.

Daman, Rooke, and Circle - If you didn't know what freaking is - or maybe some of you are kidding as Wildefire says - but thanks for saying that. I don't know what the video says, "get your freak on" or "bonin", but freaking is f*cking.

Circle - Yes, I think the guy was a jerk. He wasn't a noob and seemed to be at the Q and A just to amuse himself and make problems. I'm on US time, but I will IM you and see if we are online together. Thanks very much for the offer to help. I appreciate it.

Never heard of it, seriously. Nor did I know that "get your freak on" meant that. That doesn't even make sense. "get your fucking on"? I always took it in the freak way, as in um . . . how to put it. Letting yourself be free to be yourself. Letting go of restraints. Letting yourself put on cat ears or the like, showing your freaky nature, without restraining yourself. Who knew it meant fucking? (apparently everyone except me and Arilynn, if the others were joking as Wildefire believes)

I agree. I thought maybe freaking was what you said - behaving a way others would find freaky. And "get you f*cking on" doesn't make much sense to me either.

I had a black roomie in college. That's how I know these things.

"SuperFreak" = horny/easy. Over the top 'ho' as it were.

I actually hate rap and degenerate slang, so not familiar with the song.

Just use fuck.

When I hear freak, I think of misspelled old-school hacking (hell yeah, I'm a geek) or of people like this.

Me too. I am pretty unfamiliar with any songs and posting a music video doesn't really help.

I agree: Use f*ck (or fuck if you don't worry that others will be offended). But this guy was odd - he looked like a hand-drawn cartoon of a green alien and made weird comments throughout the Q and A. I'm sure he just asked that question to shock people, be disruptive, and was probably delighted I asked what freaking is. i don't care if someone says "fucking" and I don't care if 2 people get excited about seeing two cartoons simulate sex. I'm naive but not easily offended. I wasn't shocked that he was talking about fucking - just embarrassed that everyone else seemed to know and then offered to show me with their avatar what it meant. So give a noob a break, Green Alien, and just say "fuck" - if noobs can log onto the internet, they will know what that means. Or better - avoid noob Q and As as you are not a noob.

I would like to say I had absolutely no idea that's what it meant either. And I don't think the others were joking (I might be wrong, it's been known to happen )

And I went to an NCI Q & A a couple of times, and while they were mostly very helpful, there were indeed a number of idiots asking stupid questions and taking the piss out of the noobs. And I bet most of the people there were really glad you asked what freaking was, they probably weren't brave enough to ask.

Thanks, Midi.

I realize now that many of the questions were more advanced than what I think of as basics - questions about things I don't know so it is hard to remember, but something about "franimations" or something and building techniques. Of all the people who asked questions I think only about 3 of us were real noobs.

And after reading the thread about freaking in "General SL Discussion" ( Rooke, ty), I am guessing most were serious when they said they didn't know either. I really appreciate people saying that - it makes me feel less stupid, even with the IMs I received after the question.

I did go to the NCI class "Intro to SL", and it was really helpful. It was more what I needed, and everyone seemed on the same level - clueless, like me!

I've found you learn the in-and-outs of the client as you go along-- you just start screwing around with stuff. Flying was the first thing I pressed after I tped out of OI, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Then I discovered Cubey Terra's HoverMech and started jousting with it at a race track (my favorite newbie toy, and Havok 4 destroyed the scripts for it). Some of the stuff is buried in the folder-- turn off camera constraints for example-- but it will become natural to you. I'm glad the other Q&A worked out.

Thanks, Charlemagne.

I thought flying was the coolest thing too, especially after I learned how to move up so I didn't run into trees, houses, etc.

When you say "some of the stuff is buried in the folder" do you mean it is in the inventory? or somewhere else?

Thanks again.

It's buried in the menus-- the technical stuff that appears when you hit ctrl-alt-D. You might find a purpose for those tabs eventually, but it's not really necessary for a new person.

Sure, but I personally prefer the menu...I generally don't remember the key combinations and would have to go to the menu to find them anyway. Besides, there's other good stuff in there to be aware of.
