Red face A Mentor Of Sorts Needed......

Hello

I started SL not to long ago, about 2 hours ago to be exact, and I love the very concept of it and what people are able to do, but I really have NO CLUE where to begin. The tutorial at the beginning merely gave me the basics of what I believe SL is capable of. Anyway, this is what braught me here, it seems I cant post on the official SL forums and decided to do the next best thing, and post here! So down to the actual question, now that you know my predicament...

I am looking for a mentor or more of a friend that wouldn't mind answering all the stupid little questions I have and if possible show me around and teach me the art of creation in SL, and show me the ways of business. (for some reason or another Ive always liked buisness and how it all comes together)

Thanks
Bud Osterham

That's not too surprising to hear, or uncommon. Orientation island is more of a pretty name than a purpose around here. Personally, I'm a bit of a busy body and I'm more willing to help through these forums, if you post questions here I'm sure folks will be more than happy to answer

As far as business goes, I'd say let that wait a little until you've acquainted yourself with navigating around, communicating, and putting together your avatar

Just tried it and it worked lol, and thanks to everyone who's volunteering! Anyone is welcome (don't mean to sound pushy) the more the better, because I figure a wide majority of you are in different time zones so the more the better

it also seems the official sl forums are a bit dull for my tast, so I think ill stick here for awhile if you dont mind

hiya Bud!

Help Island public, NCI and The Shelter are three good places to start and get further than orientation island. Another good direction is to click on SEARCH and the ALL tab, and then type in whatever it is you are interested in, hobbies you enjoy etc. Chances are, you'll find plenty of other folks into it as well.

Have fun!

The flip side of that is that there is a much higher proportion of talk over there about the nuts and bolts of SL, so you might find it good to read both for a while. I learned boatloads when I was new (and still do) just by reading the official forums and seeing what kinds of questions other people asked.

I just got off the mainland and found it a little laggy, but after a while it was fine. Than when I found a group of 6-7 people I zoomed into First Person and my fps was kind of bad....

is this normal?

There's ways to counter that, especially on mainland... pressing ctrl-p and going to the graphics tab, and turning down your "draw distance" will reduce the amount of terrain and objects around you that you have to download. Unlike a professionally created and managed game, on about 90% of the regions that you'll teleport to, people paid absolutely no mind to how laggy they were making their land. You'll probably find your fps changing drastically from sim to sim/region to region. That's normal, and if the lag is really bad despite a low draw distance and almost no people, get out of there
