A question from a noob

Hi, everyone. I'm hoping someone here has some suggestions. I recently joined last week. I'm deaf IRL. I had hoped/thought this wouldn't be an issue in SL - not that I wanted to deceive anyone but just that it wouldn't matter. But I was wrong. I've tried asking some Deaf I know IRL, but they all quit with frustration. So here's some specific questions:

- Does anyone know of any new player tutorials that aren't heavily audio? The ones at NCI and the Shelter seem to be.
- Any suggestions for a noob that doesn't involve audio? I tried a movie, but it wasn't captioned. Some other things have had audio that weren't movies - just touchable things in different areas. A lot of published events seem like they are audio-based, like music or people talking/reading/speaking about something. This is just a guess - I don't have enough hearing to tell if something is playing, but a video or whatever starts and makes zero sense to me.

I have joined some SL deaf/hoh organizations, but they don't seem active. I'd also like to not just do things with deaf/hoh in SL. There's nothing wrong with it, but that isn't why I joined. I also don't expect any world, virtual or real, to be 100% accessible to everyone. I think I'm just looking at the wrong places and events.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Voice isn't commonly used-- I've only used in twice so far, personally--- though, at a few places, a lot of people are chatting in voice. I'm not sure if Torley's tutorials are subtitled or not (can't open them on this computer), but I'm sure any live helper at NCI or Ahern will walk you through stuff. There are some very nice people hanging around there.

Have you tried Help Island Public? I haven't been there in a looooong time, but I don't recall any audio on it or the Orientation Island Public tutorials. I believe they're still modeled on the HI and OI which existed prior to Voice.

Short of that, do try to to find someone in-world...you're certainly welcome to IM me for help if we happen to be on at the same time. Also, there's a group of pretty helpful people who often hang out here: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Allana/142/52/37

(Hopefully no one will beat me for that SLurl, since it's related to another forum. )

Hi and welcome

I don't know what to suggest really, but I do know what you mean, lots of the tutorials etc are in video form. I think that some of Torley's have some text on screen as well as sound, but i checked some there and it does seem they are largely audio.

As far as I remember, you can pick up some really useful notecards wandering around NCI, so I would definitely try there. I got a whole series on editing appearances etc.

If you're interested in learning to build, visit the Ivory Tower, it's all done through notecards (again as far as I remember).

Good luck!

That I remember, the particle lab was all note card and demo based. I had fun learning there

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Teal/180/74/22

My dance tutorial is texted as opposed to spoken

http://tinyurl.com/5ub4am

and while I did have a whole folder full of notecards, I'm sure they're way way out of date.

I'm sure there is plenty on the SL wiki as well:

Thanks for the reply, Charlemagne.

I don't know if I've encountered someone using voice. It is my understanding from the LL's forum that there is no way for me to tell if someone is using voice unless I am using voice. That is too bad - I hope I haven't been rude in not replying if someone said something with voice. I have no idea if that has happened.

I did finally talk to someone at NCI about the new player tutorials because they didn't make sense to me and I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong, the video wasn't working, or it was audio. She was very nice and helpful and wiling to answer any questions. But being too new I don't have a ton of specific questions, just a lot of confusion.

I usually think of questions when I'm trying to do something or something goes wrong, and there's no NCI person around. I don't want to be an annoying new player who bugs other people who are just having fun. I'm also so much more nervous about approaching and talking to people in SL than I thought I would be, especially if there is a group. I guess me in SL is just like me IRL except with the ability to fly.

I don't think I have tried Help Island Public, but I'm getting confused about all the places. I will try it. And thanks for the offer and URL, Ann. I appreciate them.

Thanks, Midi. I don't think I got any notecards at NCI. I just kept trying the tutorials. I'll look for them. I also only went to one NCI place. Maybe I was at the wrong NCI place?

I'm sure I'll be interest in building some time. Now I'm just figuring out how to not look like an idiot. But I'll remember Ivory Tower for later.

I don't know what a particle lab is, Phoenixasol, but I'll try it. It has to be more interesting than just going from garden to garden, which is almost all I have done.

Someone gave me these 3 things for dancing - I don't know the word for them. That was great because so many places have dancing, and I thought you had to really dance and so hear the music. I'm not sure if the dance tutorial is different than the 3 things I have, but I will try it. And I'll look at the wiki. Thank you!

I just remember how clueless and lost I felt for the first week and a half or so, until I met up with someone I knew from another forum. She'd been in-world a little longer and was able to help me figure out some of the basics, as well as introducing me to a few more people. I'm still friends with some of them almost two years later, so I figure it's only fair to do the same for someone else if I can.

Hi Arilynn, and welcome to the crew!

Not sure what sort of things you're trying to learn -- just getting round SL and generally doing stuff, I take it. In which case you could try hunting down one of us SLUers and getting us to show you.

Personally, I've never used voice, and in order to avoid disturbing other folk in my house I usually have the sound turned off or very, very quiet (even when dancing in clubs -- I just bop around in complete silence[1])! So I can tell you from experience that there is plenty of stuff to do that doesn't need sound.

[1] Er...having actually written that down, I've realised how weird it must seem...

Hi Arilynn and welcome. I can't offer any advice but I've never used audio in SL. And everything I know I've learned either here on the forums or via IMs or chat in world. I hope that's an encouragement for you to hang in there.

Welcome to SLU, Arilynn Reading your post, I'm reminded of my first week in SL as well. It took finally meeting up with someone who was kind enough to spend a little time with me and answer my silly questions to help get me on my feet. Please feel free to IM me when I'm inworld. I'd be happy to help you however I could. And don't worry about voice. At least in my travels I almost never see it used.

I don't think it is weird, unless I am not understanding. It's good to know that other poeple, like you and Atia, don't use audio.

I guess I was unlucky with a lot of audio-based things like movies, tutorials, and others. With this and all the music events I thought maybe most of SL is audio-based, which I didn't expect when I joined. It is good to know that maybe this is wrong.

Hi Arilynn - welcome

I don't have any suggestions - but please feel free to IM me in-world if you need anything.

You can get by quite nicely without audio. I usually only turn it on when I am at a music event.
I have turned on voice three times, and one of those was at a poetry reading. People with voice enabled have a little white dot over their heads. If you don't have that, people won't try to talk to you.

Thanks, Jessyanne and Jeni. I need to be much better about talking with strangers. Now if I see a lot of people I usually panic and log off. My heart pounds so much it makes SL a workout! And if there is no one I am bored. I know I am being stupid. I didn't think SL would be so hard.

Hello and welcome to the forums!

I made a cheat sheet for the new interface (in the release candidate, called "Dazzle") which is coming out shortly. This should help familiarize you with the major functions needed to navigate the Second Life viewer. You can see more of it here:

Second Blogger » Blog Archive » NEW! Cheat Sheet for Dazzle

I've printed out copies for new users I need to train, and it has proven pretty effective, even if it isn't exactly pretty. Also, Eloise Pasteur, who writes for the Second Life team at Massively, is hearing impaired and does lots of work with the educational community in Second Life. I'm guessing she would have a lot of good suggestions, if you want to reach out to her.

Welcome, again! Regards,

-Flip

It is great to know that people with voice will not talk to me. I didn't think about this - they can see I am not using it so I don't have to worry about it. All the worry for nothing! Thank you, Beathag!
