I am glad you said that. I was wondering if it was just me.

Thanks again, Charlemagne. I'll try these.

Isn't rezzable something else in SL also? I have seen people talk about rezzing an object...or something like that. Maybe I am getting it all wrong.

We do rez things in SL, pulling them out of inventory and into the 'world,' or waiting for them to appear properly on our avs when worn.

Rezzable in this case is part of the proper name for group of sims and their builders.

Rezzable

Oh, Greenies Lawn may not be open to the public yet. I've seen pics and things, but it looks like it was opened to the Zero G group only on the 2nd..I don't see an update on their site beyond that.

Edit: Nope, it's open...I'm there now.

(I had to buy a Neko Greenie. Really, I was forced.)

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Hi Arilynn and welcome to SL. I agree the learning curve in SL can be quite steep for a beginner, but it's not really any less steep for those of us who can hear.

When Voice was first introduced into SL there was a massive outcry about how text chat would die, and those who could not or would not use Voice would be ostracized while 99% of the SL population were chatting in Voice. That never happened. It's been my experience that very, very few people use voice publically. I've only been in one event where there was public voice chat going on and even then, there was a lot in ordinary text chat because a few people, myself included, weren't set up for voice. (In case you're curious, it's possible to activate voice to listen, even if you're not using it to speak). So, as a deaf person I don't think you'll have any problems at being left-out socially, except in very limited places.

There are classes on various aspects of SL, held in-world in places like NCI. You can find them in Search > Events, and they will almost certainly utilise text chat, notecards and visual demonstration, not audio.

If it would help to get some one-on-one assistance with anything, try visiting Help Island Public, or one of the infohubs, and asking someone who has the tag "Second Life Mentor" They're volunteers who will be happy to help, and there's nearly always mentors available in Help Island Public or Ahern.

Aside from that I'll just second everything that others have said already, and welcome to SL.
Thanks, Karl.

The frustration I had about learning more about SL was the video tutorials at NCI, the Shelter and other places. These seem to be audio-based b/c they make no sense to me. Thanks to Rooke's suggestion I have tried to get captioned tutorials from Torley Linden, but I haven't been successful yet. But maybe these tutorials are not that helpful to begin with - I'm not sure. I was so confused in the first few days that I thought the tutorials must explain all of SL - like telling the secret of how SL makes any sense. I'm starting to think there is no secret.

I have wanted to try the NCI classes and talked to a NCI helper - that is a good suggestion. I just need to be online when they have the Completely Clueless Noob Class.

I no longer worry about others using voice. My big worry with voice was that someone would say something to me and I would look rude b/c I wouldn't realize and not reply. Now I realize they probably won't talk to me b/c they can see I am not using voice. That's a big advantage over RL - in RL if someone says something to you and you don't respond, they often think you are being rude and sometimes get angry. A point to SL.

What is an infohub? Is this a general term for places like NCI or something else?

Thanks again.

Yes, infohubs are places that are set out especially for new residents. Someo f them, termed "Welcome Areas" are where residents first appear on the mainland the first time they choose to leave Help Island. Chances are if you're already off Help Island, your Home is set to one of them.

And you're right, there's no great secret in the tutorials and videos that you can't find elsewhere. I learned most of what I know through trial and error, and a little bit of teaching when I first started building, and most of the rest has come from forums like this. I never even saw a video tutorial until a few months ago and I've never attended a class in-world (well, not SL-related classes - I went to one on Buddhism once).
