I don't know Massively, but I will look at it. Is Eloise Pasteur the person's name in SL? I hope SL does more for new deaf/hoh players. Everyone I know quit after a short time. I know most hearing quit soon too, but a world with mostly text would be great for deaf/hoh to interact with hearing and do things they wouldn't IRL.

Thanks, Jessyanne. I have to stop being so nervous or quit so I don't have a heart attack. Now it is too stressful. I didn't think about this when I joined SL.

I don't know anyone who uses Voice regularly, at least in the social aspects of SL.

But don't worry...I'm pretty introverted myself and I still manage to have fun.

Been there, done that. SL can be very stressful -- there may be lots of people around, and you don't know what they expect of you, or how not to look clueless.

I like to explore empty places when I feel overwhelmed by the number of people around. Sailing, swimming, diving, horse-riding, parachuting are great for this. Or fishing.

I've never used voice, and I don't always turn the sound on You can make your home in SL without ever having to hear a sound, and nobody will know the difference.

I use voice daily, but only with one person. Without him, I would use it rarely. There are tons or places and things to see that aren't overly crowded. If you want a great set of landmarks, let me know! (Brig has them all) hehe

I have been frustrated with myself. I am lonely in empty places on SL, but with people I just stop. It is so stupid. One great thing for me about SL was to meet strangers and talking with them - I can't do that IRL. Or be in a group of people talking. But I get so nervous so I leave. I know it is not RL. I know I can approach anyone and talk. I am driving myself crazy.

To any hearing person reading this, please do not think all deaf/hoh are like me. This thread probably will embarrass some d/hoh. Most of the d/hoh I know quit SL because they were frustrated and confused, not because of this. I only know one Deaf who had this problem.

Hi Arilynn! Welcome to SL and SLU!

As you can already tell we're a pretty helpful bunch of goodhearted people waiting to help those in need.

I've never used voice in SL and up until recently (the last 6 months), almost all the tutorials were text based. I think the knowledge base articles are still available on the Support tab of the Official Second Life website. (But I couldn't get the page to load, so I'm not sure.)

You might send a note card to Torley Linden, or maybe one of our "FIC" can get thru to him for you, asking if any of the old text tutorials are still archived anywhere accessible.

As for your nervousness texting many people at the same time, and being unsure of what to say to a bunch of strangers -- welcome to the club. I have dyslexia and aspergers, and I hate having to deal with more than two people at a time. My reading and emotional comprehension circuits just can't handle more than that, and I usually feel like I've replied with something very stupid. That, and I'm a slow and sloppy typist -- although I've been doing it for over 30 years.

Thanks for the welcome to the club. I think I have said some very stupid things in SL, and I have only been in SL for a short time! I am a good typist, but I get confused about sending text to a IM or to everyone around. I keep sending IMs to everyone so people then respond in IM. Then I have many IMs, and it gets harder to reply right to anyone. This was my one experience with a group of people, and it was a mess.

When I see a lot of people in SL they usually are dancing. Are they listening to the music or texting/talking? Do most people in SL spend a lot their time dancing? I didn't imagine so much dancing in SL.

Access KB (Knowledge Base) in SL: Yes, from the Help Menu, Select Second Life Help, or just press the F1 key. It will ask you if you want to open the browser in the viewer.

Torley... How do I describe Torley... (OMG, somebody help me with this one.) Torley, is one of the most colorful characters from Linden Lab. He also makes all of the YouTube video tutorials, and wrote quite a few of the text based tutorials on the old knowledge base.

FIC - Feted Inner Core - The people that have been here since the beginning and have connections to people that work in LL - Linden Lab. Cristiano Midnight - our Forum's owner and moderator is one, Joshua Nightshade is another. There are several others that hang out here. I'll let you discover them on your own.

Note cards: Yes. Create a note card. If the recipient is standing next to you in-world, you can just drag it onto their avatar to give it to them. If they're on another sim or not in-world, you can search for their name, then open their profile and just drag the note card on top of their profile. It will be stored for them until they log in again.

Dancing: Yes, there's a lot of dancing in SL where everybody usually listens to streamed music. But I don't usually dance much. (Music and Texting don't go well with my dyslexia - I can't keep track of it all. It makes my head explode. I can't listen to music and do anything else at the same time.)

I prefer to build and make stuff, so someone else will have to fill you in on the whole dancing thing.

Hiya Arilynn and welcome to SLU and SL

I've never used voice in SL and I still often feel overwhelmed when I have a lot of IM's going. I am an introvert that is trying to create extrovert habits! I think you'll find that many many people feel the same way as you - especially in the beginning of their sl life.

It can be all very new and daunting in the beginning.

There are some marvellous scripting tutorials at the scripting college - none of which involves sound.

Is scripting writing programs to build or do something? I don't know anything about programming. I don't really understand all the building in SL. It is not like crafting in the other games I have played (sorry, I know people don't like SL to be called a game - I don't know another word. Platform? That seems wrong also.). I see all these classes about building and don't understand why it is so popular. So far, I'm just trying to figure out the basics.

Hmm, platform or virtual world works. Building in SL is for the most part manipulating basic shapes (prims) that you create inworld and linking them-- you can upload textures from Photoshop and change the look of a prim. Sculpties are funky shapes that can be uploaded into SL; they require a seperate software to make (Blender or Maya), but allow you to make new shapes. LSL is a special software language for SL; you can work magic with it, but I'm a newb at that stuff (and building,too).
