What would you choose as the greatest song(s) of all time?

A little while back I came upon the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time published by Rolling Stone (it's from earlier last decade so it might be a bit dated now).
The RS 500 Greatest Songs of All Time : Rolling Stone

I admit I didn't get past the first 200 songs but nevertheless I got a good idea of what people chose.

It got me to thinking what would I have choose for it. Well I haven't been able narrow it done to just 1 but here's the ones I came up with (also the song listed for number 1 would very possibly have came to mind, although not the Bob Dylan version, The Rolling Stones version).

Meatloaf - Bat Of Out Hell
Joe Jackson - Real Men
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb

All songs from before I was born, however I'm the type that is into songs from various decades anyway.

So, what would yours have been?

Dear Sir
Why oh why does this list insist on missing out such intarwebz classics as "We like tha mooon" or the culturally impacting ditty "The Internet is for Porn". Also, I demand you explain your exclusion of Lonely Islands (feat Akon) "I just had sex" as it is a song I love to sing - and one I would like to sing a lot more often.

Thank you
Yours Sincerely
Brigadier Geoffrey Shuttlecock III (Ret), Mrs

Shiloh, I'm gonna take a crazy guess that you're a Meatloaf fan.

I found the list disappointing myself as well, clearly of all time means nothing before the 1940s!

I saw Smells Like Teen Spirit at #9 and felt like running! I mean the song is alright but not that good!

But the list just got me considering what people would consider the greatest song of all time, perhaps it was a bit of disappointment at the list as well, very mainstream and my choices are as well but I have found sometimes amazing songs are not the ones released as singles or even noticeable on the charts.

I actually vaguely remember reading that issue. I think they compiled the list from polling music critics and musicians. I remember being nauseated that Nirvana was in the top ten.

"Kashmir" - Led Zeppelin would reign #1 on my own list but ranks only #140 on theirs.

Though to be honest I've never heard a song prior to the 1940s I was ever interested in, I'm more into stuff from the 60s onward.

The funny thing is that I like Meatloaf, but I'm not particularly a huge fan. I do happen to love that album, though. One thing my husband got me hooked on was the songs on that album, and I think the collaboration between Meatloaf and Jim Steinman resulted in some of the best, most interesting, songs ever recorded. IMHO.

What? Are the actual everyday audience the people the songs are made for not relevant?

/Me is not important enough to know what should be a good song because I am not in the music business!

I don't agree with all the choices on the list, but reading over them, some of them jog a bit of memory - I think of where I was when I was listening to that song and /BAM/ it's like I'm back there. Music. The ultimate time machine.

Not in the eyes of the Rolling Stone gods. They are secretly convinced we'd all pick this song:

I think the first time I'd ever heard Like A Rolling Stone was when me, my ex & his parents went to see The Rolling Stones live back in 2003. Being only 18 at the time I gather I was by far the youngest person there, it's also when I discovered I liked the song Angie.

Those lists are always absolute crap.

My list would include a metric ton of Bowie, a bunch of The Cure, some Depeche Mode, a bit of Pink Floyd, and possibly some Camouflage.

Springsreen's Jungleland has to be at the top of my list, but as a former sax player, I'm biased.

And I have to second the complaint about the recent-ism. It is completely unacceptable to have a list of greatest songs that does not put Robert Johnson somewhere in the top five. No, seriously, everyone who submitted their votes to Rolling Stone without Robert Johnson on their list should have a court ordered restriction orohibiting them from ever touching a guitar again.

(although I prefer Hellhound on my Trail to Crossroads Blues)

Seriously, dude sold his soul to the devil for guitar lessons, but that's not enough for Rolling Stone?

And who on Earth nominated Smells Like Teen Spirit, a song that Cobain himself wrote as a joke and hated, as number 9? Seriously? Then again, the answer to that is probably the type of person the song is about. And, ah, Kashmir was 140th? What the fuck were they smoking? Or not smoking, perhaps? And while Satisfaction isn't bad, it's nowhere near the Stones' best, so there's no reason to put it so high above Sympathy for the Devil and Gimme Shelter.
