Hallelujah #1, #2 and # 33 on UK Charts

In a rare moment in music history, the song Hallelujah, covered by two different artists, along with the original version are on the UK charts. The song has been covered by over 100 different artists, and currently, the version by X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke holds the # 1 slot, followed by the Jeff Buckley version at # 2 (widely considered to be the best version of the song). The original version by Leonard Cohen also has entered the chart at # 33.

The Hallelujah chorus: Three versions of same song vie to be Christmas number one | Mail Online

I think the Alexandra Burke version is pretty run of the mill and certainly doesn't deserve to be #1:

The Jeff Buckley version:

The Cales version was ok - a bit bombastic for me with all the additional accompaniment. I prefer lower key versions - my favorite is probably K.D. Lang's version:

It is a hard song to sing badly - but there is just something about this version that gets me every time.

Alexandra's version is OK. I do think she's very talented, but I just don't think this song is right for her.

The Jeff Buckley version is easily my favourite.

Out of the versions posted here so far, I like K.D. Lang's version the most and Alexandra's version second.

I just think it's great that this song is getting so much exposure. I think it's one of the greats. I've got something of a collection of Hallelujah cover versions, but kd's and Cale's stripped-down versions are my favorite. Cale's version on the tribute CD "I'm Your Fan" got me through some tough times back when I was 19. It makes me glad that in his waning years, Leonard Cohen may be gaining a greater appreciation.

My mum was so pissed off when that X factor girl got to number one - she rang me up and ranted about it for at least half an hour. To be fair, she has murdered it a bit.

You know, I really liked Alexandra's version. I felt she was a bit weak in the beginning, but my untrained ear really perked up when she started belting it near the end.

However, I am personally drawn to Jeff Buckley's version... it sounds great. I remembered this song being on the Shrek soundtrack, and I enjoyed that version as well.

That Leonard Cohen version... I hate how he half-sings, half speaks the majority of the lyrics. It makes me think he really can't carry a note. However, the effect of all the people standing as a choir behind him is nice.

I don't like her version - she sings it too dramatically. I think Jeff Buckley's version is so good because it's subtle and he sings it with real emotion. That girl is just another one of Cowells cash cows and no matter how well any of them can hold a tune, the music leaves me cold. I think there's more to being a good singer than being able to hit all the right notes.

Oh, here's what I was looking for.

I don't think this song sounds exactly right as a lullaby. I think it's meant to start out soft and quiet, yes, but in the end it's supposed to build up steam and be belted out. It's a beautiful song at any rate.

Funny passage from a short story I'm reading:

Quote:
Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Hallelujah" filled the store, and I hummed along. it was almost pleasant, in a life-sucks-but-at-least-there's-good-music sort of way.

But as I listened to the lyrics--truly listened, instead of just letting them float over me--the almost-pleasant feelings went away. I'd always thought this was an inspirational song about God or something, because of all the hallelujahs. Only it turned out there were words before and after the hallelujahs, and those words were hardly uplifting.

Rufus was singing about love, and how love couldn't exist without faith. I grew still, because what he was saying sounded way too familiar. I listened some more, and was horrified to realize that the whole song was about a guy who was in love, only the person he loved betrayed him. And those heartbreakingly sweet hallelujahs? They weren't inspirational hallelujahs. They were...they were "cold and broken" hallelujahs--it said so right there in the chorus.

Why had I ever liked this song? This song sucked!
