Alexandra Burke's version of this song is the only one I've ever heard that didn't make want to stab my brains out with a spork.

/me runs and hides.

ETA Sansarya, thank you for posting that, because that's exactly how I feel about this song and I wasn't able to put my finger on why I hated it.

hah... it's a beautiful tune, and the human voice goes along well with it. The story of the lyrics, however, are something else entirely. lol

Quote:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Seems to me it's a song all about biblical references. King David, Samson & Delilah, ... maybe it's about how broken-hearted love forces us to faith in god?

Here is the Jeff Buckley one again from when it was used in an episode of the OC (I miss that show )

The Kate Voegele version posted above was from an episode of One Tree Hill:

Ugh, it is such a generic, by the book rendition of it - there is nothing special at all about the way she sang it. It was totally soulless - just a generic pop version of it. I've never thought it was an inspirational song - I've always found it heartbreaking and haunting, and her version just left me completely cold. Karaoke versions are better than that one.

Bleurrgh. X Factor. I hates it forever. Why can't people see through it for what it is? A cheapo talent competition for pub singers who urban yodel their way through songs.

Meh. I'm not a fan of "drunken pirate" singers like Leonard Cohen or Jeff Buckley, so their versions do nothing for me. I'm not suggesting that the Alexandra Burke version is amazing, it just annoys me less than the others.

I've gotten into musical debates about pop songs where I've said, "Yeah, well if Radiohead wrote that song, you'd think it was brilliant!". I'm going the other way with "Hallelujah"- if Jessica Simpson originally wrote and performed this song, I think most people would think it sucked.

Flame on!

What do you think of the K.D. Lang version, or the Rufus Wainwright? They are my favorite renditions. Cohen is noteworthy as a lyricist, certainly not as a singer.

Except she probably couldn't.

Cohen's genius is songwriting - not performing, as some have noted on this thread. Some of what he has written I believe will endure a long time. I can't imagine anything Simpson has done will do that.

Something about Rufus Wainright grates, but I'm not sure if it's his musical style or his personality that gets under my skin. So yeah, thumbs down automatically.

I won't pretend that I'm the world's biggest kd lang fan, although I do think she has a lovely voice. I made it about halfway through that youtube clip before I got bored. I can't be convinced to like this song!

stumbled into this thread thinking it was about the Hallelujah chorus. um... yeah. well it's a lovely piece of music!

I like this song too, I'll have to stick up for the Wainwright version which is my fav. But then I just plain ol' like Wainwright.

Actually Alexandra Burke's version sung live on X-Factor sounds way better to me than the recorded version.

But then live music has some special magic to it...

I like the Buckley version best and KD Lang a close second. I've actually had the Buckley CD for a while and Halleluja has been a permanent fixture on my i-pod for over a year. The rest of the album is awesome too. It's such a shame he died so young and never made any more.

There's a couple of cd's you can get Lewis. His last album a double CD 'Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk' is just brilliant and also the double CD 'Live at Sin-e' is amazing to hear him live.

I don't think this song sounds exactly right as a lullaby. I think it's meant to start out soft and quiet, yes, but in the end it's supposed to build up steam and be belted out. It's a beautiful song at any rate.
the one on the soundtrack is different than the one that is in the movie. it's a different singer entirely.

i think it's very fitting this song has it's own thread. one of my favorite songs of all time. kd lang rocks it best.
