Problems running Minecraft

I've had a problem with Minecraft all year; the game locks up very often (but not always) when I do things like open chests or furnaces or the chat (more often when hitting Enter after typing something).
Until around 1.3.0, this mainly happened in MP, but now it's as bad in SP as in MP. The game runs very poorly in general now and is practically unplayable.
I can usually get around the lockup by alt-tabbing and closing or opening another program. That makes Minecraft act as if I'd hit Escape (which I can't because it's locked up), but it rather ruins the immersion and also doesn't always work.
Odd thing is that when a lockup occurs, CPU usage drops to zero, rather than the opposite.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm wondering if it's a known problem with Java applications.

When it first started happening, I tried everything. Java beta, switched to Java 64 bit, updated graphics drivers, etc. Nothing made any difference.

Another problem:
I'm running Vista64, so I have Java64 installed, but the Firefox plugin for my online banking requires Java32, so I also have that installed. How do I figure out which version of Java is being run when I start Minecraft?

Do you run it with the client or in the browser?

Also, stackijg too many different mods can screw it up if you are using any of those.

Also on Java, 32vs64 will depend on yoir PC amd OS install. If youbhave a 32 bit OS its going to crap all over 64 bit anything.

In the immediate, I would suggest going to control panel, Manage Programs or Add/Remove programs, whatever its called in your version of Windows, assuming yu are using Windows, uninstall everything Java related completely, then go get whatever the latest regular version is amd start with that from scratch.

Client.

I generally only use one mod and removing that (including a complete reinstall of Minecraft) makes no difference.

I'm running Vista64, so both Java 32 and 64 work, which is why I don't know which version Minecraft is using (I hope it defaults to using 64 bit on a 64 bit OS, but I have no idea if that's the case).

yeh. I can try that again, I suppose. Last time it made no difference at all, though.

Thanks.

Huh, that's weird. The only glitches I've ever had with Minecraft involved the chests being over-shadowed improperly.

yeah, the first ~1.5 years I played, I had no problems either (and I played a lot) and then I suddenly get this problem which seems impossible to fix. I'm running out of things to try.

I can't think of much else. Most of Minecraft's issues come from Java.

You might try upping your memory allocation for Java. I know MC coupled with the 64bit version prefers 2048MB. It could also be something as simple as inadequate power or too much heat on the video card.

I tried that and it may make it run a bit more smoothly, but then the lockups started to happen.

But if nothing else, it did show me that it is indeed the 64 bit version of Java that is running. That's good to know.

It is a laptop, but I've never had heat problems with it, not after 10+ hours of Skyrim and other newer games, so it would surprise me if that's suddenly a problem (it does get hot, but not enough to affect how other games play). I don't even run Minecraft fullscreen.

I'll keep an eye on it, though.

Thank you.

Does the audio stutter during the freezes by chance?

No, all sound stops immediately, and then, as far as I can tell, when Minecraft unfreezes, it starts from the exact point where it stopped when Minecraft froze. It's like every single part of the program freezes (which the drop in CPU usage also seems to confirm).
It's very peculiar.

I have tried updating both OpenAL and the LWJGL libraries if that's what you were thinking?

I never found anything that made any real difference to the problems I had, but now with 1.4.2 I can suddenly play again with only a little stutter from time to time (and I'm pretty sure that's due to something on my system, like antivirus updating and such, and not Minecraft itself), so pretty much like it used to be before I got problems.

You can make sure MC is using Java 64 by making a custom shortcut, but I prefer using MagicLauncher. On the advanced tab under "settings" you can specify which Java to use. The 64 bit one is mostly likely to be at: C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\java

(I have both 32 and 64 bit Java installed, and sometimes MC doesn't pick up the 64bit version on its own, besides magiclauncher making mods more manageable -- I use Optifine and REI's minimap).

Also, make sure your audio drivers are up to date.

You could try getting this:
[1.4.2] OptiFine HD A7 (FPS Boost, HD Textures, AA, AF and much more) - Minecraft Forum

Which I recommend everyone having anyway, paired with Magic Launcher, of course.
