I too am in Europe (English guy living in Germany). I had very similar problems, and wrote about them when I started the Chapter & Metaverse blog.

There are some things you can do, if you kept the chat logs that detailed the agreements between yourself and the guy who sold you out. For this to work you also need the guy's RL details, and there are ways of obtaining that, and you can then sue him, which is quite painless in the US as many attorneys will look at your case for you, look at your evidence, and then do the case on a no-win no-fee basis. if 3 or more decline, then leave it, as they are not convinced they can win. The fees to these lawyers are not paid by you, but by the losing party.
