Goth when goth was. Also,
socially unacceptable.
| Unless something has radically changed since I left Zero earlier this year (I was there for 2.5 years), they're not paying anyone. They take a 10% cut on DJ tips. (note: this is not why I left Zero- that's always been how they do it, and not a new policy.) |

My Mood: | I've worked at clubs that take a 10% cut of host tips (but that was back when I was a host), and know of clubs that take anywhere from a 10 to 20% cut of dancer tips. But have never worked at one that takes a cut of DJ tips. Quite frankly, I don't know many DJs these days who would be willing to work at a club that does. Even if the place has its own stream. (Then again, I'm a rock DJ and mostly associate with other rock DJs. Things could very well be different with other genres, for all I know.) |

And it's certainly not a goth/industrial phenomenon either. We've never taken a penny from DJs ever, in four years. | |

Business: Avatar Bizarre Client: Crash-o-Matic 2.0 Blog Entries: 25 | I've simply stopped working at clubs that take a cut of the tips. I figure that's for the new kids in the "biz" ![]() I know a lot of people say "You should do it for the love of music and not for the money" but honestly, it's two + hours of my time, which is pretty valueable to me. I do love to DJ, but I learned a long time ago that doing it more than once a week is just too much time taken away from other pursuits. I mainly do it for the fun now, and usually just for a couple of friends who have occasional events planned and want tunes. It's a nice arrangement. Having a schedule is too much like real life work, and I get enough of that in real life. |

My Mood: | True story: I was once asked to work at a club that had been closed down but was going to be reopening soon, only to be told by the manager that the owners were planning to take a 20% cut of the DJ tips. Managing to keep a straight face in RL, I informed the manager that it was probably a bad idea, and she agreed with me. The place never did reopen. That is the only time I've gone to a club OR been approached by one about employment (and in that case I was approached) and been told that the club would take a cut of the DJ's tips. There is only one instance I can think of where I'd even consider working for a club that took a cut of my tips: Paid salary or guaranteed money (ie, I don't get a certain amount of tips, then they slide their cut back to me) on top of the tips. I do love DJing. I just worked 6 of the past 7 nights, including shifts at 2 different clubs last night (with a 2 hour break in between), and there's no way in hell I'd have done that if I didn't love DJing. On top of that, I work the next two nights. Tonight is my night off, and no way I will volunteer to fill in tonight. I really need a rest! But I'm not going to lie about the fact that I'm in it for the money as well. Its my source of income, because I simply can't afford to buy L$. I normally work 3 shifts a week but I do fill ins when needed, and its because I don't like leaving the clubs in a lurch. Not because of the L$. When I start DJing just because of the L$ is the day I stop DJing. If its not fun, its not worth it. |
