Linden Lab working a next gen virtual world

So Ebbe Linden stopped by today's TPV developer meeting with some interesting things to say:

Linden Lab is working on a next generation virtual world
Most of Lab's development resources are already working on it
Smaller dev team headed by Oz Linden remains working on SL
The new worlds will be closed sourced, and not backward compatible with content from SL

The closed source thing... heyho no Firestorm anymore... but on the other hand... if they give us crapy default graphics which would be very easy to fix if shaders/code/settings were open or in reach and don't allow us to customize these like it is currently in SL... then gg. This will go to trash faster than anything... i don't want to run around with super blur depth of field and greyish grey color palette.

Was there any indication on this "next gen" being as realistic as the cutting edge of SL content creation, or if they were planning to make it more cartoony and/or Minecraftian?

open source hifi vs closed whatever-the-frig from LL?
Pretty easy choice for me --particularly given LL's record of being deaf to their customers.

It was made clear that this will run on many more platforms than it does now, so mobile .. maybe consoles .. graphic fidelity just took an arrow to the knee.

To me, "Not backwards compatable with existing SL content" means "We won't have the same parametric prims or sculpts as SL uses them."

Which, yeah, combined with being closed source, means that content import won't happen unless
a.) The new world has it's own in-world modeling system.
b.) A packet injecter proxy for the new VW is created to read downloaded SL linkset files and recreate them using the new system. Similar to copybot.

And sculpts... well I wouldn't expect sculpts to be supported at all. That's sort of SL's own special thing. Best you could do is convert them to mesh. And decrease the vert count while you're there because those things are nasty anyway.

But mesh... I'd assume model import will still be a thing in a new virtual world - how could it not? Unless it's a more locked-down videogame console Virtual World kind of thing like Playstation Home. But I couldn't take something that seriously.'

It just depends on how locked-down they plan on making the new virtual world.

My guess?

They're redoing a VR world for the Rift.

And that's smart.

I didn't ask specifically about in-word content creation, but Ebbe said that content creators are the most important users of the next gen virtual world.

He agreed with my assertion that Second Life secret sauce was law barrier to entry for user generated content creation.

Gotta love it, the low expectations of people who wish to create negative propaganda. I have mixed feelings about the new project; however, the community should be fine if the Lindens end up listening to the customers. I'm sad about the closed source, but I can't wait to see what they are working on.

The details are too sparse, to be fair it could be Rift, it could be mobile and low graphics, we'll all just have to wait and see.

However it's fun to speculate and hope it goes in certain directions but I really think it's too early for a Rift based world to be the main source of development, I'd expect them to be looking at it, but not as the main focus.
