New default avatars are mesh, so...

New Mesh Avatars Now Available in Second Life - Second Life

Quote:
"Today, we’re updating Second Life’s default avatar options with 24 brand new mesh avatars. You may have spotted a sneak peek at a few of these as Lindens tried them out recently, and starting today, you can start using them yourself!
Is it an exaggeration to think this could be seismic? If John or Jane Doe log into SL for the first time and a mesh avatar is default (assuming it is - that's the impression the blog post gave me), is this a suggestion that LL is trying to phase out/get rid of the traditional avatar by telling newbies that this way is the new way?

And will skin designers start creating skins specifically for the 24 new mesh avatars since there could be less demand for traditional skins (getting new users are important to any skin business)? I know mesh avatars have burst on to the scene, but this seems like it could be the mainstreaminization of them.

Or I could be wrong.

The traditional avatar is already a mesh. I assume the new ones are an alpha'ed 'traditional' avatar with a mesh body? What about system clothing?

They're repulsive. The arms are bizarre. The clothes hover an inch above the body and the hair looks like it's made of wood.

On the positive side, no more permanently baked on underwear. Although they don't really need it.

I wonder how unrealistically tall these avatars are. Also, those ladies have man hands!

They must have been afraid something like that might succeed, so they made sure it wouldn't: the meshes are no-mod.

The shapes can be changed, so if they're too tall, it's fixable -- but that's really the least of their problems.

The zombies are the best of the bunch. And more vampires than you can shake a cross at.

No-mod. Well, that's custom skins out, then. How... half-arsed.

So send in the clones... They all look like clones... Well, maybe, next year...

* Sigh *

They are ugly. Really, really ugly. Like trailer park dweller rejects ugly.

You can't customize them at all, so the rigidly-locked faces will all look the same, right down to skin tone. The shape is locked, so you can't even change their height! (The first girl in the list is 1.95 Meters tall, as measured against a prim, which is about 6' 4" tall!)

The mesh clothes that they come with are also locked - you can't even tint the color of the dress.

Their feet hover several inches above the floor, while standing in a Linden home, even after walking around for a bit.

The old prim clothes and hair sort of work, but system clothes are right out. And since the mesh body is a single unit (and can't be alpha masked away), I doubt any existing mesh clothes that are not explicitly made to fit these new avatars will work, either.

Gawd what a half-arsed attempt on giving the people avatar 2.0.

It's like if you asked for milk, and got a glass of water. it's still a beverage, right? Wait, changed my mind, more like a glass of piss

Are those even fitmesh? Or somewhat standard sized?

The shapes they come with are no-mod, but you can replace them easily enough and of course the fitted mesh conforms, so hover and height can be fixed, and other sliders played-with to some effect.

Ginger Chevalier of Absolut Creations just came out with a mesh avatar called Eve- the nice thing is that you can wear your regular SL head with it if you don't want to look like a clone - I think it is similar the Wowmeh, but the big question is that of clothes. Will each avatar require a specific set of clothes or do normal system clothes work? I can't seem to find anything on clothing for the new SL avatars? Has anyone tried to change clothes or wear existing fitted mesh outfits with them?

ETA: Just caught Ceera's post - guess that answers the questions on system clothes. Oh well...

If they are not modifiable then it's just a pretend doll and not Robert. I've put time and effort into making Robert look like the unique person he is ;-)

I'd like a better avatar, yes , but not at the cost of losing the ability to customize. I want more detailed settings to tweak; not fewer ;-)

Will this not confuse noobs? "Oh, to change you'll first have to get rid of that avatar completely and get an older one."

Newbies have committed many fashion crimes but even so, this seems like a harsh punishment.

One of the zombies actually looks like Ruth got turned

Ha hahah ahah the armpits!!!! Also no boobs or bits.
The werewolf is fun. Actually, the non-realistic ones will probably look better overall (I haven't tried the zombies yet), as we won't have the same expectations.

But that pasted-on skin... OMG. That's a show-stopper.

The new avatars are no modify. so no new skins.

Just have to keep in mind these are "starter" avatars. they aren't meant to be for the long haul. People will use them for a week, then move on. For that purpose, they are fine.

The vampire monster is fun, but has very odd wings -- they're like a bat's, with membrane between the fingers(?), but the membrane is visible only from the front. From the back, all you can see are the fingers with nothing in between.

So, now clothing, skin and hair designers will have to explain to newbies (and quite a lot of oldbies too) why their wares will not work with these avatars?

I tried out these new mesh avatars on a long-suffering alt. Sadly they weren't very impressive and one could be forgiven for thinking they had somehow accidentally landed in SL from Active Worlds or Kaneva! I know a lot of time, effort and skill has gone into creating them, but they needed to be better than what exists already and I don't think they are. However I'll start with the positive... The nostrils and ears are more realistic than on the standard SL avatar mesh. Also the joint smoothness at extreme angles of articulation looked better.

But I can't help feeling LL should be pursuing a different path. I'd much rather see the the existing customisable avatar mesh improved with more polygons, but in a way that doesn't interfere with applying existing skins and other textures. I'd have thought that would be possible. Tight fitting clothing like underwear or socks doesn't need to be mesh as long as it can have outlines that follow body contours realistically without smudges appearing here and there when we move.

Still, I suppose LL is offering a choice and it will be interesting to see if newbies stick with mesh avatars or go over to system ones. Most new things introduced by Linden Lab improve the SL experience but I'm not sure about these mesh avatars.

I saw these avatars in-world a bit ago. I couldn't help but think that the black afro guy looks like Lenny Kravitz, and one of the white guys looks like an Asian Keanu Reeves. I also liked how all of the female avatars in dresses were going commando, maybe Linden Lab is finally understanding what people come to SL for?

The zombies are definitely the best of the bunch.
