That makes, that I became very picky over the time.

Personally, when I'm renting land, I want the landowner there. I want to meet the person I'm about to enter into an agreement with. Renting land is very different from buying clothes or an AO or any other one-time single purchase.

Sid: As a very minor land barron, I feel it's often we're damned if we do, and we're damned if we don't. On one hand I think the majority of people like to look on their own, so some of us set up website listings or maps. A lot of people really appreciate this. On the other hand some people need more help picking a place than a website can offer, but some people think of it as being impersonal.

If DoctorZen is anything like me I type up all my responses, even if they seem somewhat automated. Since the majority of the people really like to discover stuff on their own, I too would have directed them to the site. The person he was helping jumped the gun and got all butthurt right away. How can he help, if they don't give him the opportunity to help? I don't think DoctorZen or myself would have turned them down if they asked for more help.

Quote:
It's really simple: Don't be visible online when busy with a lot of other things.
That's quite the contradictory statement, since you often times need to be online to deal with things in your estate.

I'm glad that it has taken a u-turn back to customer service.

We *may* have witnessed a very public meltdown, and I cannot rejoice at that.

The customer service side of this whole debate is very informative.

I have a very bad sadistic streak when it come to stuff like this, scaring people. I used to watch those shows where they would scare people nearly to death with a hidden camera and cackle like a witch, lol.

Not sure what you mean about gifs, but eh, I often misunderstand posts.

Re: The original compaint by Soap:

I would have also been upset by how I had been treated. As if I was a thief.

I'm not sure I would have come here to complain, but you can bet I would have complained to my friends, proving the old adage that if you upset a customer, they will tell 10 friends, and so on....until you have lost most customers than you gain on your best day.

Re: Bad customer service and it's long-acting effects.

Many many years ago, I lost my nephew to Sids. I took my brothers, and a gf to a store to get them suits for the funeral and a dress.

We found some that we really liked, however, for whatever reason the ties were on the exact opposite side of the store.

I had a suit in my hand, and wanted to see how the ties would look. I could have, if I had realized gotten the tie first to compare, but I didn't know.

We had been followed around the area the whole time we were there. One of us was African-American. Big surprise. We were on the upper floor so it wasn't like we could just run off.

I was told..."You can't go over there with the suit." Being used to complying with authority I said ok. But one of my family members wasn't up for that, so she let him have it.

I, and one of my brothers left the area because of the brouhaha.

In the end? They did not get my business.

Any business that treats you as a thief, is out.

I've shared that story each and every time someone mentions going to that store.

Landlord for a long while...I never did the website route.
However, it is kinda hard to judge just how much help a prospective tennant would like.

You can tentatively ask if they would like to be shown parcels/homes - some just vanish at this point.

You can hand them an info note with listings - some just vanish

You can take them by the hand to the rental board that shows everything you have up for grabs, complete with a teleport facility to view - some just vanish

You can teleport to the home/land they express an interest in and offer them a teleport to join you - wait a while..to find theyve left.

You can hire managers who are in the rental office to greet and assist - some ignore them - some just go poof...

Its not an easy science to crack , we always seemed to be prettymuch full though, so I guess we got it correct occasionally.

btw, that store was JC Penney.

I was poor then, raising the kids, so that was where I could afford 3 suits and a dress.

I have mixed feelings about them now, because they've come out as gay friendly, but I still haven't forgiven them that slight, especially when we were all hurting, that I haven't been back.

JCPenney are a shower of cunts, anyway. They don't treat their employees any better, either.

So True, Jolene, and merchants should be aware of what you're describing, as it might temper impatient responses.

However, personally, I like to treat customers well because it's the right thing to do, because it's the way I would want to be treated - the golden rule. I succeed in this most of the time, but I've certainly made some big mistakes I turned into learning experiences.

It feels manipulative to treat customers well just because I don't want to lose money however - just because I fear they might be upset and tell others and cause a loss of sales.
I'm not saying you are implying this - am just expressing some of the complexities one can get into when trying to be a good merchant.
