It's Time Again! "NOT JUST ANOTHER" Texturing Competition

Start Date: March 28th
Deadling: March 30th -5pm SLT
Awards & Mixer: March 30th -7pm SLT
Location: SLurl: Location-Based Linking in Second Life

Hello my finely-meshed friends...

Just wanted to post a quick thread informing everyone it is time again for the once-a-month, 48hr "NOT JUST ANOTHER" Texturing Competition!

Here's the deal: once a month, either myself or a guest artist creates a model for the event--this model is left untextured (they are always super high quality, designed by professional cg artists). The contestants grab a copy of the model on the start date (Friday) and turn it in at the deadline (Sunday). After we've received all entries, the models are placed on display in the "NJA" Gallery and the judges stroll around tallying up their votes (top three). Finally, we hold an awards ceremony and mixer later that evening. In addition, the winner has their model displayed until the following month in the winner circle, and has a wonderful poster created of them (and they go on the 'Past Winners' Wall of Fame).

This competition is really picking up steam, and we are getting some super talented artists involved--not to mention some very distinguished judges.

This is a very professional competition, and we strive to bring in all walks of life and all levels of talent. And if bettering your craft or meeting awesome talent isn't enough, how's L3000 for first place sound? Second and third place aren't anything to sneeze at either.

If you are interested (this month's model is very cool), swing by the "NOT JUST ANOTHER" event gallery, have a look around, grab an info & sign up sheet, and take a look at the model you'll be working from on the 28th if you see fit to enter the competition.

Thank you everyone. We'll show you the money, if you show us your texturing skills.

(PS. all finished models belong to the contestants--"NJA" will not sell them. Each contestant can do with their model what they want.)

Hosted by Glowbox Designs, and sponsored by V3 Group & TRU Textures.

All these creative content creators around here, and not one of them is interested enough to comment on this awesome event I've put so much time into? Hundreds pass through here all the time, and only 20 ppl even read the thread...

No but really. Some of you are super talented. And this event is seriously cool...and it puts its money where its mouth is too.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not desperate for contestants...we do have a fair amount of entries every month...but those are mostly from in-world connections. I wonder why--with all the content creators here--the forums seem to have zero interest in this event.

Hmmm...imagine that.

Come on guys...you can win L3000 in a single bound...that ain't bad. Not to mention you and your company are on display for all the grid to see until the following month.

This is a really cool contest. Wish I were a texture maker.

I can texture things, but I use existing textures.

I suck at 2d art.

I've never been big on contests. I can see the merit and if you are into them I assume they are a lot of fun. But the very fact that it is a competition suggest a certain level of confidence in the participants.

I have always had real trouble pushing myself forward and have a tendancy to assume that if I made something it will automatically be less professional than someone else could do.

Not just in SL either, RL is just as bad. I paint/draw and rarely show my work, I write songs and music that no-one but my partner ever hears.

So there ya'll are......if you were all wondering what to buy me for Christmas (and I know all you were) a bit of confidence and a kick up the arse

Humps you really need to get some because I think your work is awesome.

So ok, I fill this out and drop it off at Glowbox?

I like the model, it will be fun.

I have to join in in the choruses of "I'm crap at 2d". I'm a prim slinger, baby! Only textures I can do are wrapped around a sculpt.

Io you are so sweet

......and Josh I may have got it wrong but I understood that the competition was to texture the model using any textures...either textures you made or bought. I assumed it was more about how you texture the item.

hrm, I wouldn't really think you could do most of these models just with bought textures, though, hon.

Some of it sure. But it would be tough if you didn't do some of it yourself.

Yeah, most of the work is "handmade". Obviously you can use textures to integrate into your own work as well but the challenge is for texture people to really create something uniquely made for the model.

Anyway, I'm going to fill out the thing and give it a go!

I probably got it wrong (not the first time ) It was the TRU sponsorship that threw me. I assumed it was a 'buy our textures and show us what you can do' although thinking about it I know Lillybeth does give space to up and coming texture artists too.

Ah, I see what you mean.

I don't think so, I don't remember anything about that there.

I didn't even read the form though, yet, heh. Only that they were looking for "above the bar" kinda work. Which is what I saw there from previous models. And the work couldn't have been done with just bought textures, it was too model specific.

I would encourage you to join me Humps but I don't want the competition.

Really, hon, you are very good, stop being so down on yourself!

You can use any texture you want. Custom or not. Naturally we encourage custom texturing, because it makes the finished model much more cohesive and personal, but you can do what ever the hell you want...you can texture it all brick if you choose.

Thank you all for the replies--I was beginning to think forum-goers (here and the main forum) have zero interest in an event like this.

For those of you who lack texturing confidence. As a content creator, I understand, trust me. Even with my vast cg skills *cough* I see 16 year old kids creating things I can't come close to. Trust me...we all feel humbled time to time. The key is to look past that, enjoy yourself, learn a few new tricks, and meet some cool peeps.

It's not a lack of confidence.

It's an awareness I can't do it at all.

No, this has nothing to do with buying textures from TRU. However, naturally the two of us found each other.

Again, we encourage custom work because it makes your finished piece look much more...professional. Many times you will need to fit a texture, a bit of text, a decal...you will need to bring the piece together...this is where custom work comes into play.

TRU are only sponsors. And I'm very lucky to have them involved. However, I never mention TRU as a resource in the information notecard--simply because, like I said, I encourage custom work.

Sorry. If someone were to read the information note card at the event location, it does say this actually. The rules and explanations are very detailed and clear.

Of course. To each is own. Searching for Halfling clothing--to some--may trump anything and everything.

Just keep in mind, this is "NOT JUST ANOTHER" Texturing Competition...so you won't find this kind of set up anywhere in Second Life--not to mention, you won't find this kind of purse being offered to winners.

Meaning...I should specify where textures should come from in the forum description.

Duly noted, thank you.
