You know what kills me sometimes about LL? They're really good at making almost cool features that are almost useful. Like implementing animations without allowing a way to change the default avatar animations in the client. Like implementing voice without making avatar lips move. Like sculpties without lossless upload.

Its kind of like boredom often sets in when something in 80% done.

I'm hoping that completing projects like Windlight, Havok 4, and Mono show a willing to see things through to useful completion.

Who (besides LL - we know how reliable their word is ) says WindLight and Havok 4 are going to be complete?

If you mean "we're-releasing-it-half-assed-despite-what-beta-and-JIRA-says-and-we're-completely-borking-the-grid-for-the-forseeable-future-complete" then I'm with you.

From Catherine's current BLOB entry:

3. Can I use SL with my product, domain or organization name?

Yes, under our special license to use “SL.” You can use “SL” with your own trademark. So, if you own the “Dell” trademark, you could call your presence in the Second Life world “Dell SL.”Or, you can use two common nouns with “SL.” For instance, SL Ballet is not ok (only one common noun) but SL Ballet Troup works. And SL China Portal is not ok (”China” is a proper noun), but SL Chinese Residents Association works. You need at least two common nouns so others don’t think you’re an “official” Second Life organization or website. Read more about this license.

4. What if I have a domain name that uses “SL” with only one common noun?

We’ve given you 90 days to transition to a new domain name that works with our special license. If you need additional time, please write us at tm-licensing@lindenlab.com and we’ll consider giving you permission to extend the 90 days or to forward the old domain name to your new one. For more on submitting a licensing request check out the FAQ.

Yeah, nothing about how under their old rules this was allowed, nothing about how SL can mean anything, nope, if you use SL, you are screwed.

That's just dumb. SL Ballet isn't OK, but SL Ballet Troup is.

Maybe I'm just slow, but I don't get the vital difference between those two.

The blog entry's reply #36, by Razrcut Brooks, is the single stupidest comment I've ever seen in SL on any forums. (Sorry, Razrcut.)

Starting with, "Please ignore all the uneducated neagativity[sic] by the minority of residents who do not 'get it.'"

(I really hate it when people come in and suck up to the Lindens and encourage them to ignore everyone else.)

And moving on through, "Many business/website/blog creators are upset because they cannot get away with capitalizing on LL’s success any longer."

What an oxymoron. LL would literally not have the success it does were it not for the success of individual businesses in SL, and their concomitant websites and others.

You might even say LL has quite literally piggybacked on OUR successes.

To top it off, he suggests, "if you cannot see the difference in SL Ballet and SL Ballet Troupe then please use a lifeline and ask a buddy to explain it to you. …. kthksbye."

Too bad he didn't just EXPLAIN the difference, then. I just got done asking here what the difference is, and I tell ya what, there IS no difference.

The only difference is a "troupe" and a ballet company, such as San Francisco Ballet, is generally considered smaller than a company, and/or is a group who travels (but not always).

Troupe:
1. a company, band, or group of singers, actors, or other performers, esp. one that travels about.
–verb (used without object)
2. to travel as a member of a theatrical company; barnstorm.

coco

(I did get a kick out of somebody earlier on who asked what LL had against ballet! haha)

Edit: I thought of a reason. Maybe there would be ANOTHER group that wanted to be known as SL Ballet. And rather than that group have to append something like "troop" onto the end, nobody gets to be SL Ballet, and everyone has to append something.

and remember joints? and HTML on a prim.. Even if they make it fully interactive, it's still through the parcel media controls so if you want to have multiple web pages you need multiple parcels... But even that doesn't really work, make 2 small adjacent parcels with your 2 webpages... and you still can't see them both simultaneously, just one as you stand inside it's parcel.

Well, it looks like SLTrivia.com is fucked as a domain name. Thank you very much, LL, for pissing off one of your biggest supports over the years.

GogomodoTrivia.com: Your Source for Grid-Wide Trivia Competition and Fun! should be up shortly.

I find it hard to believe that the domains “SLAgePlay.com” and “SLSexCenter.com” would be allowed because of the two common nouns, yet the domain I own, “SLTrivia.com” is somehow not allowed.

I’m a founding member of the yearly Second Life Community Convention (Second Life Community Convention » Welcome! and Second Life Community Convention » Welcome! ) which has received permission to use various Linden Lab marks through our contract. If possible, I’d like to set up a similar arrangement with SLTrivia.com.

I’m also the founder of SLBoutique.com (which has since been rebranded Shop.OnRez.com) – Philip was the fourth person to sign up for a SLBoutique account. I’ve been encouraged by various Linden Lab employees over the years to use “SL + one common noun” domain names. While SLBoutique is no more, SLTrivia.com has grown into what may be the most popular in-world game on the grid, with over 150 running, competing locations.

I’ve heard there would be a method for those of us who’ve been using these domains for years (SLTrivia. SLExchange, SLProfiles, and SLUniverse being four prominent examples) to ask for an exception to the rules, but seen no method mentioned. I’d like to continue using SLTrivia.com – is there some way we can get a signed letter giving us permission to do so, perhaps under some kind of grandfathered provision (domains registered prior to 2008, perhaps, that apply for permanent permission to use the domain)?

The amount of work technically to get all 150+ locations using a new domain name, let alone the re-branding, is daunting. I had no idea the trivia game would become so popular, but let this link be a testament to how many of your Residents enjoy the service:

GogomodoTrivia.com: Your Source for Grid-Wide Trivia Competition and Fun!

I hope all is well. Please let me know what you would recommend.

What pricks.

What total, unmitigated, miserable pricks.

I think they quite agree with Razrcut, that WE are “capitalizing on LL’s success.” Here they were, this whole huge company, and somehow WE came along and "capitalized" on it by daring to make the world, populate it, and come up with services and websites for it.

Notice, too, how blatant that letter is. They admit that they don’t give a damn about the residents, and will change things only in cases that are “strategic for our business.”

OUR BUSINESS. As distinct from you feebs and choads paying our salaries. Who are welcome to go screw yourselves, as YOU are not “strategic” to OUR business.

Shame on any of us, including myself, who ever thought for a MOMENT that they recognized us as the least bit important to them in any way, or as anything other than something to be used, abused, and tossed aside.

And shame on LL for being so utterly short-sighted to think that they have much of a business without us.

Cause I just don’t think they could make it financially, without us, the feebs and choads.
