Prediction: SL will be version 2.0 very soon

$L100 says LL releases Web on a Prim, Mono, Havok4, and Windlight all at the same time, and calls this release "Second Life version 2.0"

Any takers?

It's quite possible. Will they also fix the inventory, group message and memory leak issues?

Nah. Even if they did all those things at the same time they wouldn't call it secondlife 2.0.

Sure if they want to destroy the grid by releasing everything on it at once.

No. They'll call it version 1.20

i'll take that bet.

2.0 will be entirely about scaling. everything else is trivial in comparision.

They won't call it 2.0 until they've successfully implemented avatar presence and inventory systems that are independent of the simulator code.

I would hope they learned not to publish 2 major updates at once. Especially 4.

I don't think SL will become v2.0 EVER.

I predict endless increments of the second value.

Roll on Second Life v1.99999.0

My prediction is that they're watching the open-source projects closely, and once one of them is far enough along with a solid enough foundation for growth, they'll pour all of their support into it, hire the main devs as Lindens, and call THAT Second Life 2.0

I predict that the client will hit 2.0 with just a minor update. The same for 3.0 and 4.0, ect.

How do I shot version?

I really don't think they will try to release all of this at the same time. They have done some nutty things. But releasing Havok 4 and Mono at the same time seems very foolish. No, I think 2.0 will be the "Dazzle" release.

Server Code Update Tue/Wed/Thu This Week

We’ll be updating the server code on the hosts that make up the Second Life service this week to server code version 1.19.2 (current version is 1.19.1). As has been the case for quite some time now, this will be done via a rolling restart spread over several days, and there will be no extended downtime or new viewer required.

The list of changes is fairly small, and there should be no noticeable effect in-world:

* Support for PRIM_GLOW in llSetPrimitiveParams - this will require a forthcoming viewer update to author and compile scripts that use this, however
* Additional internal web service infrastructure work to remove dependencies on central databases (initially disabled, we’ll then slowly start flipping services on)
* Additional internal logging and diagnostics to track down the cause of various failures
* Fix for a rare “I just saw someone else’s IM!?!?!” bug
LULZ!

Mono Beta Refresh 5 « Official Second Life Blog

As Creem says, the meta JIRA has links to all Mono issues:
https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-1276
You can see the resolved issues linked in the left column, and the still unresolved issues (a much smaller column!) on the right.

The purpose for this beta is to achieve the best compatibility between the LSL2 and Mono VMs. Our current milestone doesn’t include taking Mono to the Main Grid. Instead we are discussing, internally and with residents, what the next milestone should be. Should we start a drive to get Mono on the Main Grid? Or should we add some enhancements first (several being considered)? Or should we shift to working on improving the simulator scheduling strategies? There are arguments for all these, and if you’d like to join the discussion please come to one of the office hours listed on the Mono Beta FAQ page:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mono_beta_FAQ
Much thanks to all the residents who have been testing Mono, finding bugs, and contributing to the discussion on our future course.
They are kidding right? Rather than bring in a scripting engine that uses less resources lets discuss "improving it" or doing other things first!!

In a former life, part of my job was rescuing pathological software projects from themselves. A very common cause was a leader who could make no distinction at all between the relative merits of courses A, B, C, and D and therefore decided to do them all simultaneously and wondered why there was no progress on any of them. Yes, I know that this sounds like I pulled it from Dilbert, but it was distressingly common in the "field".

From the same blog post, entry #16:

Crystal, TaraLi — is Mono the BIG enhancement? Maybe so, and we are certainly leaning toward pushing this out onto the Main Grid as the next step. However I want to be clear that it isn’t quite so obvious an immediate win as it is with, say, Havok4. An improved physics engine in the simulator gives immediate benefit, because all physics runs through it. But the benefits of Mono in terms of lag reduction or simulator fps depend on how many scripts in the region have converted over to Mono. We’ve discussed this a lot at office hours, and there is no “automatic conversion to Mono” that doesn’t break a lot of content. So the win for Mono comes gradually as more and more LSL programmers release Mono versions of their scripts.
I don't follow this stuff very closely, but up until now I had assumed that there *would* be some automatic conversion process. In the absence of that process, I can't fault the above argument that *immediate* impact of mono will be small.

I want Mono too, just saying I can appreciate the argument.
