I think your perspective on Philip often depends on what point you joined SL at. Early on, Philip was deeply involved with the SL community, and the most accessible I've ever seen the CEO of a company be.

As SL grew it became more difficult for him to be that way, obviously, but for a time he was very involved with members, which I really enjoyed. You could email him and get a response, he posted in the forums, came to resident events, hung out at the welcome area, and was just generally involved and incredibly approachable.

I really miss that - it is part of what made SL very appealing for me - the sense that we were all involved in building something special, not just customers. The disillusionment that followed was quite a drop.

I agree, it is almost impossible to not like Philip (and I have certainly never even tried not to!).

Yes, he is a nice guy, and friendly, and accessible.

IF a little zany.

I have a wait-and-see attitude, but I will be happy if this means that the Tao of Linden will be thrown out and Employees Will Be Told What to Do.

Here's how I figure it: I pay those employees.

(That is to say, we all do.)

I don't want them working at SL for their own pleasure. Or for their own self-development.

I want them working at SL to give us what we need.

So I want someone telling them what to do.

I get tired of paying a bunch of kids to have fun, and I think we have seen (and Philip has seen) that that doesn't really work in the long run.

So - get rid of the Tao, get rid of the "self-directed" work, and start telling people what to do, and what to fix, and by what deadline.

Just like every other place in the world.

Even if some of it isn't fun, and no one really wants to do it.

And remind the employees every single blessed day just exactly who it is that they ALL work for, and who really pays them.

And that ain't Phillip.

Probably too much to hope for in a corporation but wouldn't it be great if the new CEO was open-source friendly?

Cris and Ingrid, while I DO appreciate and even respect your perspectives on rosedale, mine is quite different.

Cris, I don't think it matter WHEN I joined SL [1/07] my view is based on my perception that....well..let's say that I do not believe Rosedale worships at the altar of truth. I think he will tell ANYBODY ANYTHING they want to hear at a given time. At best, he is all tak and no action. At worst he is a pathological liar, meaning he honestly can't differentiate between truth and fiction. I think he is somewhere in between the two.

Granted, I have never met him or any other Linden in either RL or SL. I DO meet charmers all the time inmy line of work so I like to think that I would be impervious to his charms in the highly event we ever did meet.

I disagree. When you joined seems to have a lot to do with how you view the Lindens. There was a different attitude when SL was small. Direct access to Lindens was common. Almost everyone had met and personally knew many different Lindens. The culture has changed in the last 2 years. This is no longer the case.

Also, one thing with Philip I think you got right. He is a visionary, but seems to fail at the getting it done phase.

Plus, how many people can say they got to AR Philip Linden for orbiting them in a welcome area?

Just read the blog post. This is great news. Philip has vision for sure and one job that should not have been imposed on or taken up by him is CEO.

Being a CEO frequently is a very sad position to be in when you are a visionary, it's really the wrong place for Philip. The place for that kind of thinker is AWAY from the business structure.

Svarga and Phil Linden

Night before the announcement, I came across Phil Linden at the top of Svarga tower meditating.

He was friendly, quiet of course
and being a bloody tourist I took my photo with him

So any editors want a photo - shout me!

Credit line mandatory of course.

I do see your point Dnate, but it reinforces my over all discussion. I've never met Rosedale and probably won't. From what I've read he has a great deal of personal charisma. In other words, I haven't been seduced by his charm. I have such a negative view of him now, just simply based on his public pronouncements coupled with lack of follow through I doubt his charm will work on me.

I whole heartedly agree. Break it down to simpler terms ... If he joined SL today, I know he would dive right into scripting and building, and prolly not profit from any of his projects, but just do it to push the system. It was never in him to be like Anshe and other business executives here.

It sounds like good news to me. We still have the visionary on board and free to do what he does best, and now we'll also have a new face on board who can keep the flightiness in check.

Truly? That's very poignant, that he would come to SL the night before. It bespeaks his love for the place.

I think it's not at all too much to hope for. There are quite a few CEO candidates who "get" open source, if they don't reach too far out of the startup community. And yes, I think it's a must. Private company "co-opetition" with open source contributors is a delicate dance.

But there's only one of him and an increasing number of "everyone."

I'm ambivalent about whether or not it would be a good thing for LL to get involved more in community management. Good things could come from it, but it could also modify the world in ways most wouldn't necessarily prefer.

That's precisely my point. Too many people would love to talk to a linden, usually screaming FIX BUGS BEFORE FEATURES at the top of their lungs.

SL will die in the future if it's not eventually open sourced. I don't think that plan is going to change. A lot of people have been putting a lot of work into that goal.

And as has been pointed out, the new CEO must meet Philip's approval. And philip will still be driving the vision from behind the scenes.

I think the opensource community will continue as it does now..

I've noticed the people most critical of Philip have never met him in real life. While that's not a requirement to develop an opinion of him, he does have a certain je ne sais quoi that has always made me like him. I must echo Cristiano's sentiments: while I appreciate that joining Second Life "early" doesn't mean you're a better person or resident, it definitely has something to do with how you perceive Philip, and Linden Lab.

There is no way that couldn't be the case - if you weren't around when there were under 100 people logged in concurrently, and 10% of them being Lindens, there is no way to re-create that moment.

Philip has done more for Second Life than any other human being on earth, and it is a place we all love, and are passionate about. I'm hugely enriched by meeting all of you, for example, none of which would have happened without Philip.

We are all in his debt for enriching our lives, regardless of the things we disagree with him on.

Regards,

-Flip
