I think it will be a good thing too. I did not want to see Philip out of LL altogether, just in a different role. Even though I have lost some of it, I still respect the man for his vision and passion.

I think this could be a good thing. Philip Rosedale doesn't have the "vision" people credit him for; Second Life was never meant to be a metaverse, it was supposed to be a haptic interface technology. SL is technically a happy accident from a failed product (re: Citydesk, FogBUGZ.)

Maybe now Linden Lab will get someone who understands the technological landscape and how software really works.

I bet that the recent Gartner Group report on SL (which is being discussed in another thread) was probably the last straw. Even though some of what GG said was laughable (Sony Home? BWA HA HA), the fact remains that people with power and purse strings DO listen to them.

Now what would be really interesting would be if Cory came back and took a whack at CEO. If not...well, Eliot Spitzer is available, I hear.

Oh, and somebody needs to start making up Serpentine/Farber 2008 lawn signs and bumper stickers for SL. There's money to be made here, people!!

According to CNet news:
----
"Corporate upheaval at Linden Lab has been going on for some time now. In December, Chief Technology Officer Cory Ondrejka left the company, and leaked e-mails seemed to indicate that Rosedale had fired him over creative differences."

That's the first I ever heard that Cory was fired.

Without reading 2 pages (I read this one and page 1), this is a very good thing and actually a very common thing for startup companies to do. It's become a completely different business in just a few years, and it's time to let someone else call the shots.

I can't wait!! This is wonderful news, and will probably change the entire infrastructure and the way problems and decisions are handled. Troubleshooting isn't the fun part of working there, and if they really are working entirely in the "Love Machine" model, no wonder we get Windlight, Havoc IV and sculpted prims while losing hundreds of USD in inventory and enjoying unplanned downtime.

I reiterate, YAY.

Well Siyu, you just don't understand the complexities of the software LL have to deal with.

Very, very true. Maybe I used the wrong examples, but the general gist of what I was trying to convey was: If they're choosing what they're working on, rather than being assigned to a task, no one is going to choose the icky yucky troubleshooting problem tasks. I sure as hell wouldn't, but that's why I don't own a company. That's the artist/visionary core of LL, but sadly that's not what I think they need anymore. They need some spit polish, in my opinion, and since most startup companies switch to a new CEO who's more pragmatic than artistic after about 4-5 years, I'm hoping that's the angle they're going for.

I'm just joshin you Siyu. LL's patent response to our suggestions over the years has always boiled down to "True, and I'm sorry you feel that way <insert name here>, but you simply don't understand the complexities of the software we're dealing with here."

It is the primary mantra of the Tao.

WOW

Phillip not the immediate boss

Very strange.

Is this the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning, to steal a quote from some movie?

On the one hand, like others said before, Phillip pretty much created SL, in not technically, in vision ... however, the guys not a businessman.

One thing that's going to make a real difference though ... the Captain of the Ship ... is no longer going to be "One of Us" .... he or she will be a suit.

This is definitely an end to an era of SL. It'll be a slower change than, what, 1.0 or 1.1, at the beginning of 2004, I forget ... but it'll be bigger than that.

Business forst, geekdom 3rd, 4th, maybe 5th.

Was Rosedale ever "one of us"? seriously?

I always thought of him as a carnival barker lining up chumps for the shell game.

That's also what you say in a press release when you have no replacement candidate in hand and you don't want the top 3/4 of your staff printing their resumes on the company printer.

Not that it will actually help, but it's a ruse worth trying.

I wonder how many people feel this way about Philip. I've disagreed with some of the decisions LL has made but never really felt that negative about him. SL has helped with rent and mortgage payments for a while now as well as being an entertaining creative outlet. I just can't seem to muster that much disgruntledness about the guy.

I have no idea about those printers work, but I'm sure Zero does and as soon as the AWG figures out how to get things to print on paper without using paper to print, he'll happily explain it to us.

AWG won't mind using paper; they'll just want the printer to produce the document without having to actually download the data from the connecting simulator that the stream will have to through in the first place.

See if the printer downloads the text codes, they might be stolen right?

yes i do think that he was, at one time at least, "one of us"
when i was doing my clown nose project way back when, he made a appointment to come in world to meet me to get his picture taken, then spent well over 45 min talkin to me and a friend of mine about what we liked, what we didn't like and what would would like to see different etc. i felt he was very genuine and very sincere in his questions.

and later i ran into a alt of his on several occasions, we shared a "thinking" spot, and i guess it made me feel good to know he was inworld wandering around quietly.
it is the end of a era as others have said, but i think it might be time to get a buisness mind in the place..
we'll see what happens.
