It's what I was told by a developer. I've been trying to find a link somewhere but I'm not entirely certain what string to search on.

Perhaps qarl can clarify if I haven't scared him off.

Consider also the possibility that while it might have been deactivated in code that there may have been reasons they do not want it activated in that current form.

How are we so sure for example that the older implementation and RC one are identical in the first place? Switching implementation approaches is a very ordinary thing in the software industry.

My point is that it was there for this long, realXtend releases a functional version, suddenly something that people have clamored for for years gets a release candidate with little to no fanfare.

Yeah that's rather vague so i'm not poking into the spaghetti that's SL viewer with just that either I guess they had from the beginning ability to handle different URLs than just ones the current viewer passes to quicktime, it just needed some sort of receiver able to handle these 'different' URLs. They got that with the integrated Mozilla code not that long ago and eventually linked these together. So some parts of the system may be ancient, but not all of it.

But aye some word on it from more linden-like source would help... if that matters at all to begin with.

My point is just don't jump to any conclusions. The only facts are that

1. realXtend made a functional version
2. SL's getting it in the RC.

Anything else beyond that is speculation, post hoc ergo propter hoc. There are just too many possibilities.

What if they saw an approach in realXtend that solved a problem that kept the HOAP from being acceptable for release? There's no proof this didn't happen.

What if someone found a better approach vs the older code? Again, no proof this didn't happen.

What if it was pure coincidence given that we have less asset issues now? No proof this wasn't the case.

All I'm saying is until we have evidence of what happened, let's not assume what happened.

I'd rather be happy it's coming. Isn't happy a better state of being? So what if it took so long? So what if it's on the heels of realXtend. I refuse to get bothered by those kinds of details.

I may be "misremembering" but I don't recall anyone arguing that SL had this capability but it was turned off for the "good of the community" back in the rex announcement thread Joshua posted a while back.

Suddenly it's available in the SL RC?

Too much of a coincidence for me but YES let's BE HAPPY about the development. This is all the more reason to get behind the open source efforts to spur on advancements in ALL of the platforms including SL!

Who cares if LL's decision to turn it on came from the release of rex? It's win-win.

LOL! Like you don't know why they are choosing to do this now... in direct response to the OpenSim grids having rolled out Webpage-on-a-prim, with further goodies coming down the line.

Competition may well be a good thing if it focuses LL's development and priority setting.

EDIT: Damn, I'm always joining these thread three and a half beats after everybody else.

Actually while I am suspect of the timing, if it is actually a response to realXtend as I surmise I do think that's a good thing. I hope their progress prods LL into implementing some of this stuff. In a few months they have ramped up functional examples of features that we've been after for years. If LL follows suit that can only be a good thing.

Whether or not they were following suit ... still good thing

I'm not surprised really that others are creating these features because they are not burdened with the other matters like failing teleports and disappearing inventory.

Now if they weren't doing that stuff we'd been waiting for from LL then I'd be disappointed.

It's very much like what happens in the OS community. The "core" will always be the slowest or last to update. That's because they bear the burden of being the "official" release and therefore are held to a higher standard of code stability.

Honestly that is the thing that excites me the most. But I do share your privacy concerns. For example, what if somebody links to a child pornography site. Can you be held legally accountable for visiting that site by merely walking onto the parcel? Are you responsible for the images stored in a local cache? These things do have to be worked out. However, this technical evolution is long over due and is going to make some really incredible applications possible. I am very excited about it.

I think I see now one reason why it's good that HOAP has been delayed this long, whether it was deliberate or accidental not being the point.

SL has always been exposing new ground in internet-related trouble and for the community's sake it's good that we didn't have to handle all of it in one go.

It's funny how this whole discussion started years ago as setting textures with URLs rather than UUIDs so that they could be stored in any web server rather than just The Central Asset Server All Hail The Central Asset Server. How it morphed into web on a prim, and that web on a prim would be a useful feature, is beyond me.

Because the people who go to Zero's Office Hours are loons, something I just realized in the last couple of months. They won't be happy with incremental works that function, they want a completed masterwork that functions incrementally.

That's how.

True Jarod, it always stuns me that seemingly intelligent people stare into the either mumbling about chickens and Jupiter II when faced with the simplicity of setting textures with a URL, but go off the deep end of verbosity when they hear "shared inworld browser" insisting that Flash and every other little plugin be fully accommodated before implementation.

I, for one, do not want other people deciding where my browser, in-world or not, visits. I try to keep my machine (my livelihood) clean and my browsing history free of things that might be used against me. And I don't want just any schmoe to be able to associate my avatar with an IP address.

I'd be much more excited if this displayed only content that is stored on LL servers or if LL was serving as a proxy. I'm not at all enthused about my machine fetching these things from third-party sites.
There's nothing from stopping me making a website right now titled disney.net (presumably) and filling it with child porn.

Or pasting a link in my signature profile to a tinyurl link that routes you to child porn.

Furthermore do you guys realize every time you load up my signature image, as it's hosted on my website, I get your IP addresses?

There is an atmosphere of assumed privacy in SL that exists pretty much just in SL. If you load a media URL to listen to someone play music, they can get your IP address too.

I understand the concern but it is one unique to SL because the userbase doesn't realize how common and easy to grab this information is.
