World Domination FTW!
| Musicians and Second Life I'm speaking this evening on Music and New Media at the Philadelphia Future Salon... I was wondering if anyone can shed some insights on the music scene in Second Life since the summer. I haven't heard any major rumblings come across any of my blog feeds. I guess what I am wondering is if its still primarily solo musicians i.e. Chick with a guitar singing folk tunes or have more full fledged bands started performing in SL? Are more world famous musicians starting to embrace SL as a music tool. I know that Suzanne Vega, Ben Folds and a few other well known musicians have performed in SL and of course there is the endless promise of Duran Duran performing in SL lolz. Have any new features been released that make performing as a musician easier? or have there been new issues that make it more difficult? Are the technical requirements still a hindrance for some? I know its short notice, but I'd need to know by 5pm EST today.... I just want to make sure that I am not disseminating outmoded information and/or opinions on things that have changed drastically in my absence from Second Life. Many Thanks, Jennyfur |

What Sarah said!
| Sorry I can't really answer your larger question, Jen, but I can relate to you that the live performances I've attended over the last couple of months have been very pleasant, except for the pesky crashes by the musician. Or stream problems. Nothing disrupts a paid performance quite like the artist just vanishing from the stage. My favorites have to be Grace McDonough and Froggy, but like you said, both are solo acoustic performers. I know of a few unheralded techno artists who mesh their own cuts from their collections and stream them into their club performances in SL. It's a different kind of art form as they don't actually write anything. It's more performance art. Like Moby.

My Mood: | I spend quite a bit of time at live performances. Live music in SL is still dominated by solo artists, but we do see duets and bands play occasionally. For example Lyndon Heart will sometimes stream his entire band from a live venue, which is fun. Ankari Holder mesmerizes with her smooth jazz vocals while fellow student David plays piano. Occasionally you will even see creative use of Skype to bring two artists together that might be separated by a thousand miles. If you are interested in cutting edge musical performance in Second Life, you really should check out Grace McDunnough's Musimmersion events. In these events, the artist performs a series of songs while she and the entire audience moves though themed sets designed to augment the experience of each song. It's a mind-blowing experience, and one that is "not possible in real life". Unfortunately her last performance of Musimmersion Version 1.0 was Tuesday night. But she is working hard on version 2.0 which will feature multiple performers. I am very excited about it. |
