Damn, I gotta get that Miss Cleo fake-Jamaican-shaman avatar going...I'm in a predicting mood.
I definitely think 2008 is going to be a pivotal year in SL history - things are definitely changing very rapidly.

OpenSim is well on its way to becoming the Mozilla of the metaverse. The developments there are incredibly exciting - the latest realXtend release moves things even further along, and shockingly, they delivered everything they promised, on time.

I wouldn't even hope for notification personally at this point, but I imagine this bullshit is probably buried in some release note or JIRA, if at all. Am I ranting here for nothing and just totally missed it? I cannot find reference to a change anywhere, certainly not one to explain it slowly changing over time on a Monday sim by sim.

For some reason this reminds me of the total lack of notification they did when they started billing for VAT.

Jesus H. Christ, what is that blog of theirs for besides navel gazing?

Do they have ANY kind of quality and communications processes in place at ALL?

Again, Robin and Cory responded with a rushed town hall to shut people up, and Philip never ever bothered with any kind of reply.

As the head of LL, ultimately the problems are his responsibility to answer for, and he has done a ridiculously inadequate job of doing so. He is a visionary and I will always be grateful in that regard for SL, but as LL has grown, he is no longer right to lead the company forward. He has thrown all of us under a bus in one way or another time and again as thanks for our loyalty and commitment to SL, which really is less about being totally dedicated to SL anymore but that no viable competition yet exists.
I agree. I don't think he realizes what a PR mistake it is for him not to be visible, like he was in the Town Halls. (Which were a TERRIFIC thing.)

I can't understand this, because with his charisma and charm, he really SHOULD be out there with us.

I think maybe he has started saving it all for the "real" people; i.e., corporations, politicians, or anyone not regular residents.

He isn't charismatic in text. He types at like 10 words per minute. He's admitted as such.

Thus, he'd have to do another voice town hall, which I imagine is a bitch to set up.

And what would it solve? Nothing. "We hear you, we're fixing it, and by the way, let's talk about bananas"

He doesn't code, he doesn't manage. He just does CEO stuff.

He doesn't do anything, that's the point.

Regardless of what you feel he's the front person and the face of the company he's run into the ground and ditched because he got bored.

Well mystery solved as to why the change happened, at least:

https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/WEB-474

Apparently, LL removed some functionality from their web based interactive map that some sites use, which broke their ability to show where on a map a postcard was coming from. (Breaking change # 1 with no warning). In response, Koz Farina who has some kind of in world blogging tool that relied on that functionality, requested that the information be added to the postcards that they could no longer get from the map.

Instead of adding another comment section to contain the new information, LL decided to just replace the existing one that has been constant FOR THREE YEARS and was added to the postcards at my request initially. (Breaking change # 2 with no warning). In other words, to accomodate their first breaking change, they made another breaking change.

Yoz Linden also included this wonderful statement:

"At present, the postcard format continues to be NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED. In other words, we make no guarantees about all postcards being in this format, nor about the format never changing. If you write code that parses SL postcards, please bear this in mind with regard to the assumptions your code makes, and the way it handles parsing failures. "

The thing is, this ultimately isn't even about the change. Change happens, and I can adapt. What is so annoying is the lack of any kind of communication about it. Why have the freaking blog if they aren't going to use it? Snapzilla is not the only site that uses postcards by any means. Developers supporting Second Life deserve better than this.

How is this being apologetic?

Do you really expect anyone from LL to address "the community" over anything meaningful anymore? What is the community?
