Initially, LL was very supportive of it. Things soured between us when they started intercepting images being sent to my site and funneling them through the home page of Secondlife.com, with no credit to my site, totally unannounced to me.

I got all kinds of flack for it (well ok, mainly just Prokofy complaining really loudly) and I didn't even have any control over it. After going ballistic, they did put "Powered by Snapzilla" briefly, but then it disappeared. Ultimately, the feature disappeared altogether on their home page, and now they promote Flickr.

That really, really sucks Cris - but after all we've seen, that IS typical Linden Lab tactic.

For april 1st you should replace all incoming images to Snapzilla with a picture of an avatar fucking a donkey, with the caption "Linden Lab - doing this to you since 2003".

Or maybe not.

Thank you for the blog entry, btw. The thing with LL and Snapzilla did happen nearly 3 years ago, though my relationship with them has been rocky ever since (I am sure they just LOVED me for Project Open Letter and shutting down Snapzilla in protest of allowing in users with no age verification). While I am not the fanboy type, for a long time I did have a pretty good relationship with LL. I have become much more disillusioned over the past few years, especially with Philip.

I still love Second Life, but admittedly I spend much more time doing stuff for it than actually in it these days. Every time I do venture in, it seems just when I start to have fun, then the craptastic thing goes to hell. Bah, I am not particlarly pleased with SL all around right now. Sorry for the rant.

I'd love Second Life if they would go back to caring about the residents. I myself don't have a paid account - at one point I considered it, and then Linden Lab went on doing all the juvenile things that they tend to do, and I just decided it was a poor idea to pay for something that wasn't fixed up to my specifications. I'm sure at some point, Linden Lab will eliminate my account without any wounds to them, and at this point I could give two shits.

The amount of bullshit they display regarding their residents is kindergarten at best. Obviously, we've come full circle and Philip's lack of understanding on how to run a company is showing.

Of course, we all could have seen this sort of reaction (lack thereof) from Linden Lab at the previous-to-recent SLCC, where Philip took off like a bat out of hell to do something else instead of hanging around, talking to the residents and actually taking an interest in his company.

Looks like we've been had, folks. It's not that Second Lifers are looked down upon as geeks; I'm beginning to think that we're looked down upon by society because we're willing participants in the biggest fucking get rich scheme ever.

What fantasy world would that be in? 2002?

It's impossible to care about a group of a million people as deeply as it is to care about a group of 20.

Very much so.

Just as a tiny example, I - foolishly - went to a meeting about Havok 4 recently. I had noticed some bizarre functionality with flight enhancers, which were causing people to drift upwards (as anyone who has ever written one will know, these things add in an upwards force to counteract the downwards force that is applied to anyone flying above a certain point).

I asked about this and was told that it would be fixed in the next release. "Oh good," was my response, "can you tell us what actually caused it? It could be causing something else after all."

/me taps fingers. "Well, it must have been one of X, Y and Z functions or behaviours... or perhaps there was another one involved which we don't know about. What did you change to fix this?"

/me taps fingers. "Doesn't anyone _know_?"

But then, they don't. It is not a huge secret. The people working hard to fix the current spaghetti are not the people who wrote it, and, clever and capable as they are (and they _are_, certainly, very clever, very capable) they don't have an overall knowledge of how SL works, and there is apparently no internal documentation that could help them. So, things break randomly on each release without anyone knowing why. Each fix back to getting things working properly as they were takes a certain amount of time, and the fixes may break things as well.

At some point we will reach the stage where new updates break so many things that the fixes take so long and break so many other things which then need fixing which breaks....

Thanks for the offer! I actually fixed mine up pretty quickly, but kept a copy of the old code - and made some improvements to it. I think I'm set - I should be ready to launch the site some time next week.

Philip has actually been at pretty much every minute of every SLCC, including the "hanging in the bars" time. You're thinking of Virtual Worlds 2007 (the one Prok blogged for the Herald); he had the first key note of the first day, and then left. However, he had a good reason to leave, which Prok didn't manage to report: he had a meeting that couldn't be rescheduled with Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan talking about virtual economies. Just to set the record straight - I still wish SL was more stable, and we have more avenues of communication.

Regards,

-Flip

I never saw Philip at any of the bars at the last SLCC. I saw him at the party at the hotel the first night that only the mentors (I think) technically were supposed to be in, yet everyone crashed it.

But at any point after his opening keynote? No, I never saw him either.

He was there before and during the Masquerade Ball on Saturday and after everything on Sunday, in the cafe area just outside Kitty O'Shea's; he was being followed around like a puppy by someone you probably wanted to avoid.

Meh I didn't care about Prokofy, merely locking eyes with her sent her waddling into a different room. Admittedly I spent most of the weekend hungover but I didn't see his lazy eye anywhere.

You know, somehow I think Prok is a lot more subdued IRL than behind a text wall. That might just be me.

Glad to know Phillip can party and show up at events. What has caused so much disillusionment with me has been his basically being MIA in terms of leadership and taking responsibility for things. Robin got thrown under a bus over the ageplay thing, and he was nowhere to be found. When Project Open Letter did draw attention to problems and got a response, not a word out of him. Again, Robin and Cory responded with a rushed town hall to shut people up, and Philip never ever bothered with any kind of reply.

As the head of LL, ultimately the problems are his responsibility to answer for, and he has done a ridiculously inadequate job of doing so. He is a visionary and I will always be grateful in that regard for SL, but as LL has grown, he is no longer right to lead the company forward. He has thrown all of us under a bus in one way or another time and again as thanks for our loyalty and commitment to SL, which really is less about being totally dedicated to SL anymore but that no viable competition yet exists.

I still believe that we are entering a period of great upheaval in metaverse grids in general, and Second Life in particular. It's partly because of this belief that I have tiered down in SL. We may see some form of vendor boycott within SL, or even a mass defection to another grid (although it's hard to see any direct competitor in the near-term).

Damn, I gotta get that Miss Cleo fake-Jamaican-shaman avatar going...I'm in a predicting mood.
