The REAL Copybot V2.0?

Well there was some controversy over that Second Inventory program a few weeks ago, but the Herald just posted a story (with demonstration video) about a new version of Copybot that duplicates complex builds. Some of the same restrictions as the old copybot (no scripts), but some sexy new features too.

A determined person has always been able to rip off other peoples' work, but this certainly seems to make it super easy. Someone's allegedly selling this on SLX now.

Is it for real? Is it a threat? Time will tell...

Will Linden Lab allow it? Probably and that is a horrible thing in my opinion. If it has no use other than copying things, what's the point other than to steal the hard work of content creators with the touch of a button.

The link to the item on SLEX looks like it is just a bot program, not a copybot.

Backing up your items to your hard drive (export) is a feature many people will want. It's like backing up your music. However back ups can be used for good and bad purposes. A backup can be kept by the original owner or passed/sold to another (after importing again).

You know you have made it when copying is rampant.

I wonder where this will all stablise at. I wonder if we could work out the percentages of counterfeit sales vs real sales that is normal for an unpoliced society.

How moral are we?

If you mean in a technical sense, then it has nothing to do with "Allowing it" They couldn't keep it from connecting even if they wanted to.

If you mean in a policy sense, their (admittedly horribly enforced) policy is that their job is to enforce DMCA notices.

Look closer. Tasty features:

* importoutfit - Imports an appearance from an xml file. Usage: importoutfit inputfile.xml

* export - Exports an object to an xml file. Usage: export uuid outputfile.xml

* exportparticles - Reverse engineers a prim with a particle system to an LSL script. Usage: exportscript [prim-uuid]

* clone - Clone the appearance of a nearby avatar. Usage: clone [name]

* dumpoutfit - Dumps all of the textures from an avatars outfit to the hard drive. Usage: dumpoutfit [avatar-uuid]

* priminfo - Dumps information about a specified prim. Usage: priminfo [prim-uuid]

* backuptext - Backup inventory to a folder on your hard drive. Usage: backuptext [to <directory>] | [abort] | [status]

* import - Import prims from an exported xml file. Usage: import inputfile.xml [usegroup]

* exportoutfit - Exports an avatars outfit to an xml file. Usage: exportoutfit [avataruuid] outputfile.xml

* cloneprofile - Clones another avatars profile as closely as possible. WARNING: This command will destroy your existing profile! Usage: cloneprofile [targetuuid]

Those commands work by UUID, and are not restricted to -your- stuff.
Come again? :3

I've reported it to SLX staff. It's a violation (and so much more) of their ToS.

Me, too. And more hysteria in group chat, more designers threatening to flounce off, and my inbox being filled up with even more panicky notices. Oh, goodie.

OK so can we see a link so we can look at this for ourselvese? Obviously some of you have it to review. If you are concerned about posting it here in the public forum (for obvious reasons) then send me a link Via PM. I cannot make an intelligent decision or have an opinion unless I see the original sales post as this could be a lot of hot wind like the second inventory controversy.

Thanks,

Brave

Sparky, it's called "clicking links."

In the original post up there you can see a link to the SLH story here:

Second Life Herald: New, Improved Copybot Demonstrated

In that link you can see another link to the SLX listing here:

SL Exchange Marketplace - Slbot SL-BOT SLBOT !

Everything Chalice posted came from the SLX listing. Seriously, do we have to do all the work for you?

Correct on both counts. As I mentioned many times before LL cannot prevent it. The only solution to our IP issues is a social one (i.e. policies and DMCA) and not a technical one (impossible at any rate).

Right now I'm thinking of ways we can help LL enforce the DMCA. I'm musing over schemes that use the "copybot" itself to help in determining infringement.

Cute, disdainful pet names like "Sparky" and such a vitriolic response to such a harmless query...hmm methinks Mr. Nighty shades may be projecting his anger a bit?

Anyway Skeeter

I did go back and discern from the various posts before mine the sacred link --well actually the link to the Herald article and then using the blessed search function --discovered the SLbot

Actually as the others said I was teasing, but let me be blunt then. You looked like an ass responding with condescension to what Chalice said. And nasty on top of that. But if it makes you feel better to spaz out further instead of quietly recognizing you could've just looked at the same links others did instead of making rude implications that they were restricting your access to knowledge, by all means, sparky, spaz away.
