Remembering the Dead

For the most part, SecondLife is SecondLife. People choose to reveal how much of who they are in their SecondLives. Some maintain total separation. Some don't distinguish the line the separates SecondLife from FirstLife.

However, once in awhile, there's no way to separate, and that's when a FirstLiife is extinguished. Sometimes, you'll never know. That person will simply cease to log in. Sometimes, you have the benefit of finding out.

It's happened to me before, but never to someone close enough to me that it had anything more than a abstract awareness. Last week, it happened to someone who I held very dear, someone who was a major figure in "raising me" as a sailor in SL. I speak of Francois Jacques. Some of you knew her. I imagine most have not, and I wish you'd had the pleasure. She was that kind of person.

My question to the community is this: what ways can she be memorialised? We've already had an in-world memorial service, and we'll be holding a final cruise in her honour on Tuesday, 8/22, 5p SLT.

However, I'd like to do more. I have the transcript from the memorial service and I know a number of those in attendance have snapped pictures. I'm sure there are many with pictures in their inventory that they would love to share, but how?

For now, there's a spot at Nantucket Yacht Club where people can leave memorial objects, but at some point I think that spot will either be moved or cleaned up. I'd still like to find a place where a web-based memorial can be hosted and perhaps put on a prim in some permanent location at the club.

So far, I've thought of creating an open/public Flickr group (which I've made already, but not announced) and perhaps an open/public Facebook group.

Do you have other ideas?

My first thought was adding a group/section/something else to snapzilla, that would go well w/ a flickr group.

I've never used Snapzilla. How is it different from Flickr?

The cemetery that is next to Gothika, whilst being thematically appropriate, is actually in use. Quite a number of the graves are filled with loved ones ( both human and animal) and I offer space to anyone who feels that a marker there would be beneficial to them.

I even set down poseballs so people can visit their loved ones whenever they like.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for offering that service.

I don't think we'll need it for FJ, though. She's already got her name on the memorial stone at the Fastnet lighthouse in Blake Sea - Crows Nest.

Having a "grave" in-world seems too... depressing. Each to their own though, of course. I just have a simple photo. People can also do things like make a profile pick about their loved one, add an avatar tattoo related to them, customized jewelry for their friends to wear or other things like that. Since you're in the sailing scene, maybe have a boat named after her? I don't know, just tossing ideas out there.

For an in-world solution, there are bulletin boards that people can drag pictures onto and write notes.

Flickr group sounds like a good idea. and/or snapzilla.
Problem with that is that no matter where on the web you collect pictures, you only get the pictures taken by users of that service...

That stone is a nice memorial. The arrangement should be cleaned a bit I think. I mean the flowers are too close to the stone covering the names. It would look great for example if:
• The stone was circled with some chains on four sides
• The flowers were arranged outside the chains
• Instead of 2D flowers proper 3D mesh flowers were used

Then the stone would stand out as it should and it would look great.

There is a linden owned island off one of the mainlands (actually about 4 or 6 sims) that is set up as a "memorial" area, I stumbled upon it searching for a coastal lot.

It is all landscaped and has some (not a lot) of memorials set up on it for residents of SL who have passed away over the years, being linden owned and not for sale it would at least last.

One member of the RP group I belong to died in the Iraq War in 2007. We've had a memorial up for her threw like four sims now. The tradition is her memorial is the last thing down and the first thing rezed on a land. Even the ex-members of the group will rez copies of the memorial on their land. People seem to feel it's appropriate.

And, we're facing another long term member dying from cancer. Got to figure out what to do with them after it happens.

There's a church with candles you can rez and place for memorials, there are quite a few of them. Its very beautiful and has been around forever, but I forgot where it is now - its owned by one of the larger shops. Its near a pyramid with avatars for sale inside of it, one of which is the 2001 spacesuit.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure its in Mojo sim.

EDIT: Mocha

Entry from secondlife.wikia.com

The Cathedral: Nephilaine Protagonist built a cathedral in northwest Mocha where people can go and light candles that contain messages of hope and grief. It is, like all of her builds, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful creations in Second Life, and was extensively discussed in the forums.

One of the first examples of detailed texturing dating back to the cusp of 2004, this cathedral proved hugely influential to successive generations of Second Life creators focused on realistic "brick and mortar" builds. Residents still use the prayer candles in memory of loved ones today.

@Naeve: I did not know her, but if you think that others could benefit from knowing her story and example, a group of her friends could set up a yearly race or regatta in her name.

SL sailing has a lot of RL sailors involved, and often shares the rough, competitive, and sometimes highly political interaction style common in RL racing groups. If your friend was an exemplar of a person who achieved things for SL sailing without the abrasive style, that alone may make her story significant to others.

----

A note about remembering friends in general: Mike Burleigh started what is now Remembering Our Friends (Second Life Maps | Remembering Friends) in 2007. Two of my friends have memorials there. It helps.

And if you know of existing memorial sites that others may want to find, you may want to submit them to the Memorials section of the Destination Guide.

I had the good fortune to know Garth FairChang before he passed away. He has an eternal flame burning at our store in FairChang Lido as well as the one Pituca FairChang set up. When I'm stuck on a thorny scripting problem I visit him. It helps.

She was a big supporter of RFL, often contributing matching fund challenges to the efforts of the other sailors. I've already talked with another regatta organizer. We've collaborated on big regattas in the past. We're thinking of making it an annual regatta during RFL in her name. All of the ones we've worked together on in the past have been with Jacqueline Trudeau's boats; I don't imagine that changing.

She was, indeed, one of those people that seemed to hold herself above that kind of fray. She was like the glue that held often fractured factions together. We may never know what she accomplished behind closed doors, but she had the respect of nearly everyone. That's special, as you say, for sailors. =)

OMG

I just saw this.

I posted a question in the Trudeau group chat about a month ago, and not only did Francois try to answer my question but she gave me a ride in her boat. She went out of her way to help me even though we'd never met.I'm very sorry for your loss and I wish I had checked my IMs, as I would have at least attempted to sail the cruise.

Not only did she organize many of the RFL auctions, more often than not she was high bidder.

In the latest RFL a boat of mine was on auction, my partner at the time said he was going to bid and win. I said no way, Francois is going to kick your ass! And she did.

I remember the Dead, they were fantastic!

Uncle John's Band

Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more,
'Cause when life looks like Easy Street, there is danger at your door.
Think this through with me, let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?

It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me? Won't you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their wall are built of cannonballs, their motto is "Don't tread on me".
Come hear Uncle John'n Band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.

It's the same story the crow told me; it's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?

I live in a silver mine and I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune,
anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about, here beside the rising tide.

Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.
