I get to demo SL to my coworkers...

...which is great (I can't believe I can get paid to demo SL!), but it could also be a disaster.

Of course, I do plan to have a full set of PowerPoint slides with screenshots of SL at the ready, if/when the thing crashes on me. I give it a 50% chance.

This is going out to my fellow reference librarians, so I already know several places I do want to show them (Info Island archipelago, etc.).

But I could use a few suggestions for good, PROFESSIONAL sites, particularly in the fine arts and architecture area.

And I could sure use a few tips on how to avoid NSFW moments. God only knows what can happen if I get a teleport wrong

Play your cards right and you could be lovely and talented assistant for the presentation

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that...

Here's the original message I sent out. I already have five takers, only one of whom has been on SL before. Notice how I am focusing on an in-world conference, and swathing it all in a cloak of professional respectability...
----
I'm giving [name] a one-hour "crash course" in how to get started in, and navigate through, the virtual 3-D world of Second Life, in preparation for the Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education and Museums Conference to be held on March 8th. [my boss] has asked me to open the training session up to other Libraries staff.

There's room for more if you are interested in attending the conference itself, or if you're just curious about Second Life and how libraries could use virtual reality in the future.

Date: Thursday, March 6th
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
Place: Computer Lab, Sciences and Technology Library
Please RSVP: [me with contact info]

For more details on the conference, see Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education and Museums!
For more details on the presentations, see the preliminary Conference Schedule at
Virtual Worlds: Libraries, Education and Museums!
It looks to be an interesting conference, with multiple concurrent sessions on a variety of topics:

Among the library-related topics:
- Whatcha Gonna Do?: An Academic Health Sciences Library in Second Life Embraces New Roles
- Virtual World Libraries and Education: The Purpose and the Potential
- The State of Librarianship in Second Life
- Providing Library Services in Second Life

And other areas:
- Ancient Mesopotamia: Engaging Online Resources from the Oriental Institute
- Applying Distance Educational Theory to Virtual Worlds
- The Festival of European Languages in Second Life
- An Overview of Science-Related Stuff in Second Life

Any questions, give me a shout. Thanks!
------

I figured having someone else I know online might be handy to demonstrate how to send things to another person, how to use chat and IM, etc. etc.

Definitely take them around to Armidi, Straylight, Tableau and some of the Rezzable sims. Also any sim by Electric Sheep. Those are all professionally done sims that shouldn't end up in a nsfw fiasco.

Good luck!

Good luck and have fun with it, Quip, you'll be a like a kid in a candy shop, I'm sure.

Tour through my tshirt shop and I can set up a display that shows an item with a slogan like

"Quiplash's library card needs to be punched"

Actually, it was through work that I first got into Second Life. I'm a member of an information literacy committee looking at ways to reach out to the first-year undergraduate students... and SL came up during brainstorming. Basically, it's the next logical step for virtual reference work. We already provide chat-based reference service.

The rest is history. I am almost at my 1st rezday!

A friend of mine demo'd SL to her co-workers, and in the middle of the demonstration some people nearby started having a very explicit conversation in the open. She spotted it as it started and strategically positioned herself in front of the IM window, then just kept talking as if nothing had happened

If I could pick your collective brains for a minute or two... I thought about having a couple of quick-overview-type slides, giving some statistics and "factoids". The stats are the easy part. But some overviews are a little more difficult to pull together...

I'll start a new thread for the questions about SL replicas of real-life places and buildings, but I'll post the other question here:

What are the various main subcultures of SL? I'm thinking of ticking them off, but not going into Gor-y details

Educators and Librarians (Info Island, etc.)
Businesspeople, Bankers (talk about the Casino and Bank bans, etc.)
Combat/Game players (I Am Legend, etc.)
Griefers and Griefing
Furries (discussion of discrimination, etc.)
Tinies
Land Barons (and Anshe Chung)
Clothing, Skin and Hair Designers (the Fashionistas)
Builders, Architects, Designers, Landscapers, Artists and Gallery Owners
Steampunk (and Caledon)
Goth/Vampyre (Sanctum Sanctorum, etc.)
Star Trek/Star Wars/Gor (science fiction role play)
Historical Role-Players (Ancient Rome, Shakespearean England, etc.)
Machinima makers

Am I missing any obvious subcultures? Am I lumping some together that shouldn't be? Help me out here, thanks!

That's really great, I wish you luck.

A few places you might consider:

NASA: for that professional, scientific presence in SL.

Evolution Museum: this will show the natural progression of talent, and asset growth in SL--it's also really well developed.

Svarga: to show a popular location, which is superbly designed, with a heavy emphasis on fantastic architecture and vegetation.

Ivory Tower: to showcase how SL embraces the beginner, and shepherds them towards a greater understanding of building and content creation.

Those are just a few ideas...I don't know of any libraries in SL.

GLHF.

Great suggestions, Michael. I can cover the libraries part, no problems there.

I didn't know SL had an Evolution Museum! I'm going to have to check that one out. Thanks!

Looks like I'm going to have to spend all weekend working on this. Darn

I think if I were giving any kind of demo to a company I would be very frank about the level of sexual activity and goods in SL. If you don't tell them up front, they'll find out anyway and then you won't look like you were completely honest.

I would couch it in terms that make it clear you can avoid the adult content if you wish, and that companies and enterprises which have built presences in SL can control their own fate by owning their own sim and making it PG.

Parts of SL remind me of Amsterdam, except I haven't seen any hookers in the windows. They had 'em in the old Amsterdam sim but they were always empty when I was there.

Don't forget the sailing subculture. It's big enough to warrant a mention, since sailing is well simulated enough and at least stable enough to maintain a regular race schedule. You may wanna show off Hollywood and Nantucket, although as far as I've known the latter might be a bit on the laggy side.

Ya, the music scene is fantastic. There is quite a lot of very talented people out there playing their hearts out for free...it's really a cool thing.

I would MUCH rather hear a live musician than a DJ any day.
