Land prices... you gotta be kidding me.

There's a parcel next to one of ours for sale...

roughly 3300m² for 95.5L$/m²?

How crazy is that?

over 300000L$ for 3300m² mainland?

A lot of parcels of any and every size are set to L$... whatever the price is that maxes out the number of nines you can fit into a land price field. You are looking at a relative bargain!

I never understood the point of people doing that. I saw a 512k mainland plot that was exhorbinant like that. It was over a year ago, so I don't remember what it was, but I think it was something like 999,999L$. (Maybe one less 9, still ridiculous for 512)

I've never checked my thought, but my theory is that such exorbitant prices are a solicitation to make an offer.

I just don't understand the people who set silly prices and then must surely have to be paying the tier when they don't sell, or are they?

I see people wanting like 300 $USD (OR MORE) for a 1024 on the mainland and I just shake my head....

They are there in the hopes someone not knowing what they're doing buys it, and charges it to CC without realizing.

There are people who would fall for that that in SL, trust me.

Waaaaay back in 2005, just for laughs, I noticed that I could set the parcel price for my 512m of land to be *well* over the equivalent of 1 billion dollars USD. Actually, come to think of it, I think it was set for sale at a price more than the entire GNP of Spain.

So if any stray billionaires who happened to put all their money into Linden Research (which was lucky to have a mere 10 million to its name itself back then) happened to buy my parcel, I'd have 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 $L or whatever it was. Wooo!

Of course, putting that much $L on the market would have instantly destroyed the $L market. But that's beside the point. Mainly it was a cool way of playing around with unfamiliar land controls, and I set the price insanely high so nobody *would* buy it. Selling the parcel for 100 dollars would have been worse; someone might have actually bought it.

Rational action? Not really. Malicious? Nope, and carefully done as not to be so. Goofy? Yes!

I have a neighboring 512 that is set for sale 350,000 $L. Its in the middle of the sim and also has ban lines. I banned the owners from my parcels as griefers.

There was a 512 next door to my store for that price not too long ago.

I did pay a bit much on one of the 1024 parcels I got once it was for sale - but I'd been eyeing it for forever and I had the money

Parcels that are set for sale show up higher in searches for keywords like "land for sale". I have my mainland remote/feeder offices set for sale for ridiculous prices for that reason. I don't actually want to sell the land.. but if someone wants to pay me L$999,999 they can have it!

Three reasons for doing this is: To get people to contact the seller rather than buying it through the automatic sell, or possibly to try and drive average selling price of land in the region upward, or maybe they intend to show that the property is going to be available soon and then hope their 'reduced' price will seem like a bargain compared to the now inflated value of the other land parcels around in the region.

I might be missing something here, but are you in effect manipulating the land sales search to advertise your office?

I have no idea if that's against any rules, but that sounds kind of sneaky to me.

Yeah, I always figured it was delusion for some people, and "eh, I'm not really eager to sell, but if someone offered me this much I would totally take it" for most.

...and I don't think setting your land for sale to show up higher in searches for 'land for sale' is necessarily unethical if your business is, in fact, selling land. It might be annoying to people who are doing that search because they actually want to 'own' land (as much as you can on SL) if a bunch of people do that who are actually just renting it out, though. However, I don't expect land renters in general would care about that, since the people it'd annoy wouldn't've rented from them anyway, and it gets them seen by more people who would.

I seem to remember that it was ARable if the parcel was very small, as part of the policy changes aimed at eliminating ad farms. I'm not sure about larger parcels.

...oh, that's right, I think I remember them doing that for the 'donut hole' technique. People selling a nice plot for a decent price, but setting a small bit near the center, llike 16m2, as a separate plot at a truly exorbitant price. And often putting something ugly on that spot after the 'donut' was sold, so the new owner would be basically extorted into paying the ridiculous cost if they wanted to use their land...

I don't think it ever covered just any high-priced parcel, small or not. I think it was only the donut situation. I freely admit I may be mistaken, though.

(...those bastards, giving delicious donuts a bad name.)

I think only if it's being used for extortion.. for example if they put up a 50m 100% glow bling tower, or something. I think people should have the right to set land with an ordinary build on it to any price they want. In RL I could put my house up for sale for a million dollars if I want, doesn't mean anyone will buy it but I have that right.

LL has altered search in such a way that mainland for sale comes up first. It's impossible to get land on an estate, whether a sales office or a parcel for sale, onto the first page. Hence the need for remote offices, though they're not terribly effective either. Usually what I do is buy an affordable parcel that's near the top of search, leave all keywords intact, and put down my office. After a few weeks or months when the listings shuffle and it sinks, I sell or abandon the land and get a new parcel with a better spot. Sucks but it's the only thing that even sometimes works. I've basically given up on search.

ok why the hell would someone pay that much for PG land, no matter where...

... on second thought, I would pay more than that per m² for certain historic spots if I had the money and the tier, just to make sure abbots or the likes never went away.... but 1100m² pg in bay city?
