Why are people displaying names like this? Does it serve a purpose the Khamon doesn't understand? I'm looking at an av called Angelina who's displaying a mixture of Cryillic characters and symbols that approximate the appearance of the letters in her name.

It reminds me of when all the women in Corinth shaved their heads and wore black head wraps tied with yellow cords. Turned out to be just sort of a goofy red hat thing that caught on for a while. That and the cat chasing rats thing. Which was kinda funny.

But what is all this Unicode stuff already?

That example looks like unicode being mis-displayed as one of the 8 bit codemaps... like windows-1252

(If I can't read the displayname, I'll use the username)

I primarily have display names off now, because of such vanity.

I find it a shame that because of this others have turned off display names. I have found display names useful to change my premium account's name. Not that I really log in with that account, except to transfer stipends, it still is disappointing to know that some will still use the username instead of the name I wanted that account known by.

I haven't turned off display names, and will use it if it is plainly readable and type-able, but I'm not spending one second trying to decipher someone's cutsie pie attempt at being clever, and I'm certainly not going to try to recreate it.

That's the thing, I'm sure the unicode was put in for things like Kirari using hiragana for her name; for foreign languages and alphabets [well, syllabaries and such too].

But people abused it so badly that half the time I can't see more than boxes.... and if I can't read it, I'm sorry but I have to use the username. Luckily, my tipjar script can thank them via display even if I can't.

That's why I show both display and user names in my viewer. If I can't read their display name, I will use their user name.

Occasionally I misread the name because I'm not reading it as a malformed Latin letter.
I keep seeing U+30C4 and U+10E6 pop up in the strangest places.

Oh how I hate this shit. I'm all the time asking in the phoenix support group if there is any way to filter this crap out. The more hideous the name the more likely I will mute and ban you.

Another thing I hate is people changing thier display name every week. Pick an name and stick to it. I've changed my name once in a year and I only added a last name.

Its about as creative as naming your child Starchild or Celestial to show how creative and free minded you are as a parent.

Mine uses a different character style, however it's very much readable and anything I use will be ones that look like the letters they are and are not upside down letter scribbles. That's just stupid.

I'm not sure why people are doing it in SL, but the goofy spelling of my name is a translation of a funky unicode name I had in a land long ago and far away. A land of first names only, where a Rosemary already existed.
I kept the ae so I was recognizable in the new world.

In that game, there were tons of unicode names, maybe it just became a thing?

I have usernames disabled, so I only see display names except in transactions and IM windows.

Unicode names don't really bother me. If they're unreadable I just don't make an effort to interact with that person. If I have to, I refer to them as "hey you", some amusing approximation of what I think their name reads as, or their username, depending on how generous I'm feeling towards them.

It's really a non-issue.

As to why people do this, they think it's cute and generally don't give any thought to readability.

As for people using foreign characters because it's their native language....I just refer to them by their username. Not much else I can do in those cases, and it seems the most polite compromise.

Like Penny, I have usernames disabled, and don't that often see funky unicode names. When I do, though, they're almost always immediately recognisable as a normal (SL-normal, anyway) name in fancy typography, so I just use that instead. Or the username if I can't make out what it's supposed to be.

I've never liked those display names. I might have had mine turned on for 24 hours total. I don't know who anyone is, especially when they change them daily. Then we have some folks in my sports league who keep asking their personalized uniforms be changed to reflect their display name. Which they change more often than I change my socks. Had to make a standard that no, you get just one jersey, one name.

Only time I used it was making my display name "Abe Froman" for a few days. It might be just Jack now, I haven't touched it since getting rid of Abe.
