I've got this crazy idea in my head that if people aren't told SL is crap by LL themselves, and LL actually tried to make it look good, run well, and easy to use, then maybe more people would want to try it! Crazy, I know!

If I were given the authority the position requires to be effective, I'd take Art Director of the Second Life product. Within a year I'd have put into place every design change, default tweak and tool fix needed to make sims 4x bigger, land 4x cheaper, double framerates and make SL look like it had a graphics engine overhaul without touching a single line of the graphics engine code.

Afterwards I'd probably beat the marketing department into submission and begin an aggressive rebranding campaign to market SL to content creators, gamers, and people much like the existing userbase who had previously wrote SL off due to bad impressions.

If I could not get the authority the job requires to be effective, which seems the much more likely scenario, I'd ride out my time doing whatever I could manage to get away with towards improving SL and then start applying elsewhere after about 6 months to make the most of the position as resume fodder.

I'd probably work in the database department. I have a knack for it; I'd just need a bit of training first.

If I were a Linden, I would be in charge of randomly delete items from the inventory database.
I think the staff in charge of that have a lot of potential and can improve,

Your other things are good, this one is soo not right,

I will state this after being in retail for almost 20 years, The customer is not always right and that saying is highly annoying and people take it for granted.

The customer is entitled to a certain set of specifics nothing more (aka try to make them happy) if you fail to make them happy, then do not let them win with the comment "we'll customers are always right" *cringes*

I myself as a customer of LL's product or anybody else's product, I know I am not always right and will not take advantage of that.

I am ranting now rofl! not what I meant to do or to tick you off in any fashion, just teh customer thing always sours my stomach hehe.

redesign their RL offices.

(what, it's what Im qualified to do.)

then I'd go work on fucking marketplace and work on shit that merchants actually need.

AND THEN, I'd become the charity coordinator and set up a system to organize charity events in cooperation with the Lab.

I would get rid of all the automated stuff when you call there. I hate that about any place of business that you call who depend so heavy on automated calls. And sadly when you do get lucky and push the correct series of buttons you end up talking to someone who says they cant help and you need another department, then tells you that department only has automated features and there is nobody you can talk to.

Whatever happened to old fashion customer service? Thats the thing I hate most about the technology of todays soctiety. Hate it, hate it, hate it.

You'd do better off calling a 900 line at least you'd get a sexy voice on the other end and not Robie the Robot Linden.

If I were a Linden...

I would get myself a garter and strap myself to the nicest thigh I could find. Then just hang out and enjoy the view.

oh...you mean the person and not the denomination?

If I Were A Linden
Sung to the tune of: “If I Were A Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof

If I were a Linden
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
All day long I’d be in Goddess mode, oh
If I were a Linden, yeah

I wouldn’t have to lag much
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
If I had a 512 or a sim
Yaddle daddle deedle daddle dim.

I’d build a big tall bear
With dozens of prims, and,
Scripts, particles, and glow and such…
A fine big plot with mesh wooden seats for guests.
There would be one big lighthouse just rising up
And one even bigger going down
And one more in the air, there just for show!

I’d fill my yard with chicks, and meeros, and horses
And gadgets that you can see and hear
Chatting out as noisily as they can
(each little Jira here, Jira there, office hours over…
Lands like an alpha on the ear
As if to say here lives a titled “man!’

Oh, If I were a Linden
Yubby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
All day long I’d be in Goddess mode, oh
If I were a Linden, yeah

Just kidding, actually the SL community is one of the very best I have worked with. Most game communities end up with an adverserial relationship with developers which usually after a few years ends up with an immediate collapse of the game. With SL, I fully recognise LL has a long way to become liked or even trusted, I do get the sense that almost all criticism I read can usually have the line put in front of it "I love this world and I want it to do well, here is how you can do that ." Obliviously with frustration at it not yet having happened adding some spice to that statement

Actually I do have a question for folks here. Assuming SL improved performance enormously, from region crossings to lag to render times. (big assumption I know but roll with me here) What would you do to insure new users "stuck"?

Right now after performance our biggest issue is not getting new signups or even people to experience SL for a bit, its turning them into long term users.

Any thoughts on what you would do? We have some ideas but before pulling the trigger I would be curious what folks thoughts are here. The more varied the better.

Thanks!

It's a three level Barbary Coast style warehouse full of computers, monitors, and people with blue and green hair.

It's not bad inside, but it's not great either. It echoes too much for my taste. And they have a lot of rooms with exposed wires, holes in walls, and bare ibeams in the ceiling.

I'm sure whatever Bronxelf has in mind for the place would only be a huge improvement.

The only cool thing about where LL is situated are the Free Ben and Jerrys days at the Embarcadero, and. . .uh. . .that's about it.

Not a fan of the City, particularly not the South of Market area. It's a dump.

Well, what do your exit interviews say are the main causes? I know for a while there LL was doing follow ups.

We can hazard a guess as to why people don't stay and also hazard a guess as to why people do stay and still care (that blows me away, it truly demonstrates the capacity of human beings to be masochistic) but a few more hard facts might help.

How about a User's Manual for the Viewer? I wrote most of one for you 3 years ago, but your staff showed no interest in filling in the parts that I didn't have the info to finish, or in making it available within the help menu or to new users in the registration email:

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User%27s_Manual

You will note they added a notice at the top that it is out of date now *but did not update anything*. How useless is that?

A note on methodology:

I went through every menu and button on Viewer version 1.23 and tried to document what it did. A User's Manual can cover other things besides that, but at a minimum it should at least tell you how the software works, not leave it to guess work.

Its varied. The number 1 remains "didnt know what to do" (hence destination guide, Linden Realms test). If you drill down though it ends up being "didnt find the one thing in SL that is good for ME.

IE: If you are into making scale aircraft and you end up in a nightclub then you bail. Mainly because you may not know aircraft making is possible. Likewise if you end up in a sandbox but you want to listen to music you bail because you think Sl is about making 3d objects.

One thing that is fairly common though is meeting people. In general if you mete people with vaugely shared interests you stick more.

You know, when I started SL, it would dump new users into a tutorial area where you would learn to move, walk, run, fly, open boxes, how to buy things, etc.

Why doesn't this exist anymore?

It was also nice to have a mentors group out there that would help out new users.

Basically, new users are being asked to make an avatar, and then that's it. No help. Nothing. No idea where to go or what to do. It would turn me off immediately.

Essentially, you're asking a new born to go out and get a job when they don't even know how to crawl yet.

A users manual like the one Daniel is proposing is a great start.
