| Cat dead. Details later. ![]() ![]() | Well, anyone can say they have Asperger's, like anyone can say 'I'm depressed'...Not every knackered person has ME, and not every miserable fucker has clinical depression; still doesn't mean that those conditions don't exist, as this forum knows very well, and I'm not for a second implying that they aren't serious and medically real. It's the general public's lack of knowledge and understanding of what those conditions entail, just as with the higher-functioning autistic syndromes like Asperger's, that enables tiresome whingers to piggyback them for sympathy. Personally, I'd rather bear a hypochondriac or two than have vast numbers of undiagnosed or wrongly-diagnosed children and adults. Early intervention and socialisation work may help; recognition and understanding definitely does. (Hey...does this count as a RE-railing of the thread? 40 minutes since last mention of kiddie porn) |

Rather far from it, I find it pretty fucking outrageous that people who have little else but to base their diagnosis on other than an online quiz run around declaring themselves autistic when they're just an idiot. As I mentioned on SC in the day I took the quiz that Torley said he used to make this basis and I, too, have Aspergers apparently. As did 3/4 of my tech staff at the time. Hint: I don't have Aspergers.

Stoking the fires of Hell
| ![]() Actually, in Torely's instance, I would bet he does have aspergers. Take him out of the equation though and you still have a lot of people claiming they have it for whatever reason based on next to nothing. But who would question someone saying "I'm autistic", right? It will never be taken seriously if people feel free to claim they have it like some mood disorder or like feeling depressed. Anyone can get depressed. You don't just get a case of temporary autism. |

When you add that TO the fact that no doctor diagnosed him, well, I do believe my very head exploded on the spot the moment I heard that. But I don't know how many people I've met in SL who "have Aspergers, just like Torley!" so I am incredulous at best.

Well...no. Not really. In a social environment, it IS relevant to mention anything that may impair or affect your social relations. Just as it's relevant in a text-based environment to mention that you're dyslexic, or a non-English speaker; you don't HAVE to, of course (Misunderstandings around autism often mean that people with higher-functioning kinds don't disclose; not least of all to avoid all the frigging explaining...), but perhaps you'd choose to, just to make someone NOT feel 3-inches-tall if they make a joke about it, and find out about it later...

And I did qualify the difference in my original post, which you seemed to have overlooked. I wasn't saying anything about anyone who legitimately is affected by autism, I was referring to people like Torley who may as well have read the diagnosis on a fortune cookie.

| Cat dead. Details later. ![]() ![]() | No, we agree on the pointlessness of making ANY diagnosis based on a magazine article; as well as the wankerness of anyone who trivialises Aspergers (or depression or ME, come to that) by using it as an excuse for their own fucking-up. |

Business: ANOmations Blog Entries: 16 XBOX Leaderboard: 22nd | It is my understanding that Torley has never been medically diagnosed with it, but took a test online and determined that he has Aspergers. He definitely does show signs of it in his behavior, and inability especially to pick up on sarcasm and certain social cues, and the way he processes sounds and colors. Without a formal diagnosis though, it is really hard to say. Self-diagnosis online is a bad thing, as the tests are very unreliable. |

Autism Speaks is generally perceived to be for and by parents/grandparents/guardians of autistic children, generally those not on the higher-functioning end of the spectrum, and not ALL parents by any means. Their philosophy is explicitly that autism is an affliction (their literature compares its prevalence to the occurrence of pediatric AIDS and cancer), incurable, and undesirable. Now, understandably, those who have or are close to someone with an autistic spectrum disorder may disagree with this viewpoint... Full disclosure here...my best and dearest friend has Aspergers (yes; diagnosed by a real doctor); sometimes he drives me up the fucking wall, sometimes we just can't communicate...but I don't consider him disabled, or lesser, or dysfunctional (no more than any other man, anyway ), and have no real desire to see him 'cured', even were it possible. I can tell you that Autism Speaks is not speaking for him, or for me.
