| While I haven't been a fan of Linden Research in a lot of ways lately... I do wish him the best, with whatever he can get done. I used to blame Kingdon for a lot of stuff, but at this point... I think Kingdon took on an impossible mission, and neither he nor any investor realised it at the time. Anyone in that chair, on that mission then... was going down hard. Where Rod is now... if you look at the industry across the board, not even developing Star Wars Old Republic from scratch is going to save you. Say he did all the right things. Sure, many of us would be happy. But would revenue actually go up for them significantly, for doing it? I dunno. * * * * * Sometimes... sometimes you are Starbucks and plan to open coffee shops worldwide. Sometimes you may just think that and discover that no, you are only the coffee shop on the corner, and that's as far as your coffee business is going to get. Adding apple blintzes for sale next to the coffee might help. But at the end of the day it's really just you, your daily customers and the crazy guy who makes a mess in the bathroom. Shattered dreams or not, even with revenue falling... it pays the bills. Even if you will never be Starbucks. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: Jan 9,2007 Client: CoolVL | I've pretty much come to the conclusion, based of course solely on my reasoning that SL isn't doomed nor is it headed to some shiny destination. I think, at this point it is what it is going to be for the most part. It will tread water, perhaps move forward a bit on occasion, but I think it's reached the potential that LL has decided for it. I do think it will no longer be LL's primary focus and will pretty nuch run on inertia. Enjoy it for what it is or bid it farewell, but what you see is what you get. |

SL Join Date: 06/12/08 | When Rodvik took over he changed comms so that all major news came through him and many previously communicative members of staff had to get approval to say anything. Often LL staff now won't say anything about a matter because they fail to realise it has already been announced elsewhere. This may have been a good idea to stop announcement of stuff that never came to fruition, but LL are releasing features that most of the community know nothing about because no-one is telling them. LL have needed a proper communications policy for some time, it is currently one of their biggest weaknesses. Currently all comms are on-hold until they can release something positive about user experience tools/pathfinding to go along with the non-SL stuff LL are wanting to announce. I don't believe Rodvik has lost interest in SL but the comms model is badly flawed at the moment, and gives the wrong impression to Second Life's customers. |

Business: Satiated Desires Blog Entries: 1 | Well lately according to LinkedIn they've recruited a few more devs - just once I wish they'd employ a business person - not a PR person but a proper business analyst/SME (SME if they have to, I still fail to see the use of a sme rather than a BA embedded in IT projects, but hey ho). I'm at the stage of just wishing they'd fix the broken bits, I don't need more shinies that only appeal to the developer class. but I digress. I have no idea why LL has gone quiet, even if they were all focussed on this new failure of theirs I doubt they're that completely business ignorant (ok, we know I lie) to so completely ignore their userbase like this. Perhaps there's a new lawsuit we know nothing about or perhaps they've all been kidnapped by aliens and are having terrible things done to them as we speak or perhaps they just don't want anything to do with us any more. After all, we still pay their bills no matter how badly they treat us, so why expend effort when it's not necessary? Hell, they didn't even want to have a party for their birthday this year but the residents still insist on throwing them one, just to help their marketing effort along. All I know is that barring a change of staff and ownership, this is probably as good as it gets.

Business: Faerycat Designs Client: Firestorm | I would love the broken bits to get fixed, but somehow I imagine what I think is broken is not the same as for others. Then again, I could be wrong. Pathfinding is a neat idea, but I'd like them to finish fixing mesh first, for example. And maybe fix groups and the marketplace, and a huge handful of other things. Add in some proper materials and make mesh worth working with [and make it obvious] so that people will use it more when appropriate. And FFS, stop linking scripts with prims [mesh, sculpted or in world types]. I shouldn't have my efficient meshes made inefficient [for me] to use, because I need a script. Sculpts aren't efficient, but for the end user, why switch to a mesh that is, if the sculpt will always = 1? And I do hope this isn't bad news, Rodvik was giving me hope that things might improve, and its not good to have this radio silence. |

Business: Satiated Desires Blog Entries: 1 | ta ![]() I made it special (the pic that is, Couldbe's looked like this for a couple of years now) for this... The Faces of SLU Project but Cris seems to have gone awol the last few days so it's ( The Faces of SLUniverse ) gone no further.. ![]() and this is incredibly short of all the usual suspects around here, so get clicking people! My Mood: | To be fair, it seems to me that the rank-and-file Lindens responsible for bug fixing & user groups are interacting with residents as usual. It's marcom (marketing communication) that has gone silent. Since there is no longer a VP of marketing or sales, it could be that if rodvik is busy elsewhere, there simply is no one else anymore whose job includes messaging to the outside world. |

![]() There are several different target audiences for SL, and understanding who they are and what they want would go a long way to keeping them happy. On the one hand there's the Facebook 3D crowd that wants to socialize here as if it were an internet version of RL, but there's also that crowd that wants an idealized fantasy life to plug in all the gaps of RL. The older demographic is a perfect target for the latter, or a blend of the two. They have more leisure because the kids have flown the nest, but fewer opportunities for entertainment because of health issues or just "not feeling up to it today". TV and movies are geared toward the youth audience, which gets tiresome and boring. And when it comes to living out fantasies, you can't beat the regrets of an old fart mumbling "Dammit, I never did X and now I never will" over their oatmeal. Second Life is Second Chance for Second Best. For some of us, that's quite enough. (If we'd really wanted to do X, we probably would have done it at some time in the past 4 decades, but it's easier to believe we just never had the opportunity. )

Business: Faerycat Designs Client: Firestorm | SL is also good for those who just can't do as much in RL because of medical issues. I remember way back when, suggesting to my sister [before we stopped pretending] that her brother in law might like SL. He was pretty much housebound, and he could have spent time hanging around people that way. He's passed away now, his condition was degenerative, but even back at the beginning, it seemed obvious to me that SL would be good for that. |

Missing Bits of Me
| Exactly! Many Residents have RL issues such as mobility that they leave behind in SL. Recently, I've met several newcomers who needed guidance in the basics; helping them find their feet has enlivened & enriched my own SL experience immeasurably. Also, the financially challenged appreciate the Linden Realms game where they can earn some Linden$ to jump start their SL careers - a few I've met have later gone on to take out Premium accounts and are now happily learning to build their worlds. An under-used resource for new Residents, @Rodvik?
