Posting on SLU Leads to in-world spam!

So I log on today and discover a PM from an avatar I don't know, in my inbox. Opening it up, I discovered some personalised spam that related to my posts to a thread here...

Quote:
[17:20] Spammy McSpammer: (Saved Sun Jun 03 22:27:49 2012)hi Myf, read your comment on the SL forums. We have been doing comedy machinima with Flufee since September last year & it is going pretty well. I have no idea if he/we were the first [certainly in beta folks experimenting] but I'd say we are most certainly taking full advantage of the possibilities with the show: folks love it OUTSIDE of SL, iPhone games coming as well as comic books. Check out the pilot from last year http://www.not_a_real_youtube_channe...watch?v=edited
That was accompanied by a friend request.

It made for a change to my day. I don't get a lot of in-world spam, so I was kind of amused to get some that was (apparently) hand written. No particular reason for sharing it, just thought it interesting, it's the first in-world consequences (as minor as it is) I've had in response to a post here and I wanted to share.

@The Spammer: If you're reading; sorry, I don't do friend requests that don't follow a bit of genuine conversation first. I'm also not inclined to look favourably on someone who sends one.

A few people saw my posts in the Mesh Police thread and got rather verbal about it in IM's.
The Irony apparantly lost on the people who refused to call me out in public and instead opt to call me 'spineless' in private while I'm offline.

Sometimes I feel so loved.

I got the same, identical IM.

I was debating between speaking up about this or just let it go. It's a relief I wasn't the only one, although clearly that didn't keep Mr. Drax from sending me abusive private messages on my Facebook throughout the day, which is for my RL stuff(which I admittedly do have linked here) and where I barely ever discuss SL at all.

After I calmly explained my viewpoint about his 'opt out' style marketing, he went on to insist that his practices are not spam and then implied he would not be using my development services for further projects as a result of that feedback. What he neglected to mention though is that we've been passing acquaintances within the solution provider community for about 4 years and I've discussed my misgivings about this more than a couple times when he's spammed me in the past. If he had intended to employ my services at any point previous, he would have, so empty guilt-trip is empty.

I really would have preferred that he address his negative PR issue publicly on the forum, but apparently he is too big for that. I have forwarded him a link of this thread though. Perhaps it will come to some positive end.

Bizarre, as in the thread in question I was polite and said that I liked his avatars and mostly had a problem with the author at Massively.

The only thing I'e ever gotten (from a stranger) inworld from posting on SLU was that box with a load of copybotted stuff that was being sent to most of us.

I'm actually not certain he's got anything to do with the Dirty Lynx/Prefabrica/Bytegangs people, beyond using their avatars in machinima. At least that was my reading of the spam.

It's something I'm going to have to investigate in more detail though. I like a lot of the work they do and if they are linked, this mailing and Aki's FB experience will sour me on them somewhat.

To be clear i don't think Dirty Lynx has anything to do with Draxtor acting out like this.

I don't know who the players are, then. My reading of the Massively article suggested that the Draxtor Despres guy was the creator of the avatars; if they were done by someone else, then I'm very confused and really have no idea why he would be contacting me and suggesting involvement with them.

It also underscores the shitty writing by the guy at Massively, which was my primary complaint in the thread.

I think it must have been sent to anyone that posted in the tread. I got one and all I did was agree about LL calling it "mesh" was odd.

goes back to lurking

Can I have the name?

See... I didn't get one and I want to berate him for undermining my F.I.C. status... Whatta cunt, I should have gotten one first..

Seeing how he can tongue my balls for this insult, I won't even give him one of my more witty quips...

It's because you 2 don't post with your full avatar name.
How can the poor little spammer know?
You should get more spammer friendly.

Although this may be unwanted communication at least it is a lot more targeted than the usual stuff where people just go down an in-world group and target them all with details of their shop/rental.

I'd complain about not getting spammed, but it would be quite pointless.

Said spammer would invest effort in finding me in world, then dropping the notecard and clicking the "Offer Friendship" button - a bond that should never be entered into lightly.

Freinds are forever, and all that.

I may or may not take the time to read the notecard, but I would rush to decline the friend invite and delete the NC.

Then, in the coup de grace that makes it all so pointless, I'd mute them and not wonder for a minute if they ever really cared for me. Despite their protestations of friendship.

It's the way of things when you're a bitch like me.

sl is really starting to get a wide range of spam bots hitting a lot of areas for finding us..
i'm just glad my spam folder where i file my sl spam really doesn't exist.. my inventory items would be through the roof by now..
still i'm glad it's not like yahoo bots or messenger bots of any kind where it's ever 3 seconds..

i hope it never gets as bad as those..
