There's a blog entry about the new Department of Public Works.

I thought this whole program was about fixing up the mainland.

But reading this - it seems to be about just making NEW land. That has twice the prims! It sounds like it is devaluing the mainland.

Am I understanding this wrong or something?

"They will all be set to have an Object Bonus of 2 which is to say that the number of prims available per square meter is twice that of a regular Region. To handle this, Linden Lab (in the person of Governor Linden) will need to retain over half of the land in each Region. We’re aiming for at least 56%, which is typical of existing city regions."

Um did they ever announce any sort of thing inviting people to participate in this? This would have been something I would've been interested in doing actually, and I didn't remember seeing any sort of announcement asking for volunteers anywhere.

I'm confused too. Is this Mainland or Estate land? What is the tier structure? What happened to the plans to fix existing mainland roads and railroad?

They asked me to be part of the team as Head Shrubbery Sculpter after seeing the way I landscaped Liome but I declined.

The last sentence is a lie.

I thought there was a few mainland sims like this as well, where there was heavy prim work done to the surrounding area, and the non-LL land had a prim multiplier.

Jack Linden said in comments that the initial batch of workers, at least, will receive pay on an hourly basis.

I've since found answers to this, on SLRecord:

The Second Life Record: Handymen on the Linden Estate.

But yes, they did announce that volunteers could now apply, and on SL Record, I learned they get $10 an hour, and that there are to be two initial projects (not sure the exact wording, I read it late last night) - where one of them is this thing in the blog now, and the other is to be cleaning up some of our stuff on the mainland.
