I have quite a few hunt and freebie outfits that were clearly made with that assumption.
There was one pair of music themed Jeans that I would have really liked if they weren't so very low that you had to like the whale tail look to wear them (thong was included). ::sigh::

When I got my hands on my first mesh shirt and pants marked the first time I could be happy wearing a human avie - because I could walk around without a wedgie.

But before that, my avatar's tail attachment was always called "Wedgie Cover"

While I go commando in SL, I feel utterly naked and wrong without my tail (the fox kind, not the whale kind *shudder*) and monocle.

It is truly interesting what aspects of ourselves in SL (and perhaps RL) complete our immersion.

I don't wear bras or panties in SL normally (if I'm adjusting a shape or something and I want some cover I'll put on underwear or a bikini, that's about the only occasion).

I always try to wear more than one layer of clothes top and bottom though, mostly because that disappearing clothes bug has made me paranoid , and I assure myself I'll be safe from such horror if I wear more than one layer. But then I really have no idea what that bug really entails, if it makes all layers disappear or just one.

One of my "whatt?" moments in SL was when I admitted been swimming in a random lake without "protection" on a hot day and people in SL around me (I think it were Americans) were like "whatt?"
Then I was like " Y U NO swim naked in a lake in summer?"
And they were like "Y U NO get arrested?"
And I was like "because nobody cares?"

... hmm another thread in which I was like "Le me writing stuff noone cares about."

I think you've missed a couple major reason why people don't like to go naked in SL, and it has nothing to do with identifying with their avatar.

1) Sim ratings. I try to respect them. Accidentally nudity makes me feel like a jerk.

2) I like my avatar to appear to others the way I think she looks. Finding out someone else sees me without a shoes, hair stuck in my ass, or half naked because something hasn't rezzed is annoying.

It has nothing to do with being shy. I'm naked in SL, often, I spent years naked or close enough to it not to matter, but I prefer to be that way by choice or at least know that I'm appearing as naked.


ETA - I forgot to address the OP LOL
I wear underwear if someone is going to see it, either from upskirting, or because I'm getting naked for/with someone. I also sometimes hang out in my skybox wearing just panties and a t-shirt, mostly just because it feels laid back and casual to me.
