Not entirely correct. As 10 of the sims have been donated by Dream Seeker Estates, there will be fundraising for DSE's supported charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.

Again, not entirely correct. Mesh is permitted at SL9B - indeed, one of the main stages (by Kaz Aridian) will incorporate mesh - see "Update and Some Info". Builders are asked to use sculpts sparingly and for practical reasons.

Overall, the organisers of SL9B are reaching out to other events being held across the grid. As Saffia states, a hub will be provided to enable people to see what else is going on (and presumably reach other event venues more easily).

The website policies say:

Quote:
No sales or soliciting of donations will be allowed. Free gifts (aka “freebies”) and landmarks to external areas are fine.
So that suggests no tip jars for performers or charity donation kiosks. You may want to update the website if that is no longer the case. I know in past years musicians have not been allowed to set out a tip jar and that was a big turn-off to them. I mean I can understand not having funds to pay them (although with 20 donated sims, surely someone could pony up some funding for music) - but to not allow tips is honestly offensive. So if that has changed, I'm glad, but please make it known on the website and everywhere else.

Perhaps I'm thick, or naive, or asking the question that should not be asked, but why would performers be different than builders, creators, land owners, those paying for the stream out of pocket, or anyone else volunteering or donating? Why would the expectation be to pay them when everyone else is not? Why would not allowing tips for performing be insulting, when it appears that good majority of the rest of the participants are volunteering time and content and funds?

I think I'm missing something. It's not uncommon, I'm often out of the loop, but could you please elaborate?

Dream Seeker Estates donated ten sims; Fruit Islands donated two, KittyCats donated two and six have come from a designer who wishes to remain anonymous. And there are other people sponsoring in different ways - Lilith and Dolly Heart of the Heart Garden Centre have offered any plants that are needed for landscaping.

We didn't have trouble getting people, so I wouldn't think it was a turn off- but yes, they are allowed this year.

Also, some people have confused the very strict non-commercial rules of BURN2 with the SL Birthdays- since a lot of the same people work on both- but the rules are drastically different.

The SL 9th Birthday Community Event was planned by myself and a cast of some really great people. These are people who have passion and determination to take a situation they thought could be better and went out to make a change.

Although some are not pleased and have chosen this format to try and show their disfavor, as is their right, I want to take a moment and tell you why we decided to do it.
For me the word "community" in SL means something more than those people out there. I have spent the majority of my SL lifetime (nearly 8 years) helping, mentoring, volunteering and throwing SL community events. It is not a shock to anyone who knows me that I would try to assist to help throw this party. This is not my party it is everyone's party.
I am not sitting in a corner making judgments on anyone else's party or how they choose to celebrate the annual SL Birthday. It is not my wish to do that because that is not how I work, I wish to inspire others to have parties and be a part of something amazing and edifying. You can't live a positive life with a negative mind.
We were told by LL "This year we will focus the spotlight on community events" and to go out and show our creativity. This is our creativity, yours, mine and ours.

If anyone has any particular questions about our SL "9th Birthday Community Celebration", please do not post your questions here, Go into SL and IM one of us; KT Syakumi, Saffia Widdershins or myself. I personally would be glad to address any question you need answers to.

I do not think it is kind for anyone to suggest we are trying to overshadow anyone. This is patently untrue. We are not here instead of every other party, we are here in addition to every other party.
We are a very inclusive bunch of people and if you want to come volunteer some time, build an exhibit, come perform or just plain hang out please go to SL9B Community Event or just drop by June 18-24. Just because we like to party BIG (as in 20 sims) does not mean we are no more or less denizens of this virtual world.
The volunteers for this event are not being paid or compensated in any manner other than that good feeling you get when you do something you enjoy and you bring that joy to many others.

Community is not just a word it is an entity; a living, breathing entity. An interacting population of various kinds of individuals in a common location. Our common location is Second Life. Like us or not, we are throwing a shindig. Anyone wants to argue that can find me June 18-24th. I will be the guy in the viking helmet in the lawn chair at main stage cheering on some of the best damn pixel people I know, ALL OF YOU!!!!
Happy Birthday Second Life.

Just to clear up some assumptions and misconceptions. Mesh and Sculpts will be allowed at SL9B, as well as tip jars.

Go Doc, Saffia and KT!

Having helped with the SL Bdays in the past and knowing what Doc has been through (and Saffia and KT), all I can say now is "Thank you!" They are working their butts off for all the residents of SL so we can celebrate the birthday. Thanks also to Dream Seeker Estates, KittyCats and the anonymous donor.

I extend my congratulations to you guys for putting this all together and throw my support behind you wholeheartedly!

The closing date for applications is June 3rd. So as soon as possible after that.

Yes, I know that's incredibly short notice. But - sadly - it's not like we've had acres of time to set up and plan this thing. Next year we'll start in February. And have an entry deadline of April. Or maybe May. This year we're all scrabbling. But I'm sure the Angel of Death will have advice on speed builds.

Looks meaningfully at the Angel of Death.

Heh.

Well, I did post one suggesting people start planning their builds NOW, and the last one was about performers getting signed up NOW.

I might do a time-lapse of him putting together some kind of Second Life Is Dying build as a joke to show speed-build.

I'm glad that this has been posted somewhere, and it would be nice if it was on your website. Having no mention of who the team members are (I scoured the site and failed to find it .. if it IS there, please list a URL?) is unnerving.

Actually, I got the date from the timeline which is on the blog at: Key Dates | SL9B Community Event

I think team members are still being recruited - there's an application form for volunteers on the blog as well: SL9B Volunteer Profile Form | SL9B Community Event

I may be blind, but how does one apply to DJ there? I see the Exhibitor Submission form, but nothing about DJs, where they will perform, what's required and so forth.

Apparently it's too late. Just posted to the SL9B blog:
Applications are now closed for everything except auditorium booking. And let me just say, WOW! We received far more than we could ever hope. [...]

It was on that SL9B blog, mentioned in the first blog post (there's still a "Performers (DJ’s and Live)" link, but it goes 404). I'm pretty sure that link, like the Exhibitor application link, was also at the top of all the pages, alongside the remaining "SL9B AUDITORIUM BOOKINGS".

This is unfortunate. These celebrations needed better co-ordinated planning.

Very unfortunate.

Also new this year will be the SL9B birthday hub. LL wanted everyone to hold their own celebrations this year and we know we’re not the only celebration happening. We’re going to have an area where we display all the other events happening (not sure exactly how yet, but we’re working on it). If you’re holding an SL9B event on your land, we want to know about it so leave us a message!

When LL announced they were not running a big birthday bash this year, I was one of those who were disappointed. I love the birthday, and Burn and other similar stuff (keep forgetting to go to the hippy thing ! ) What I love about the big fests is all the colors, people, builds and activities all in one physical place (well virtually physical <grins> ) at one time. Even the lag contributes to the immersive feelings/ emotions that we are participating in something that's big, not practical and down-right insane ;-) The craziness of it is what's fun!

so I was really happy when it was announced that a group was going to do the big bash!

but ...

Highlighting smaller events in normal sims also makes a lot of sense.

LL needed to plan and co-ordinate this transition (yes I know <laughing> ). Of course the downsized LL team needs to be working on SL and can't be running an event like the birthday anymore, but at least one Linden should have been assigned to co-ordinate things better.

Perhaps the best compromise would have been for LL to make a small LL built Official Birthday Hub. They could have highlighted their own stuff on that hub and put up signs and teleporters to not only the volunteer large group festival but a also highlighting the different pub crawls and neighborhood celebrations. That could have been a win win for all - yay!

Unfortunately, because of the way this was implemented, it ended up with bad feelings between well meaning hard working, resident volunteers. This was not necessary and should have been prevented by better LL co-ordination.

Hopefully this gets worked out, everyone has fun and gets lots of visitors and next year there can be a big bash and lots of successful busy community parties as well.

Well I just visited the garden and it was just beautiful. Same artist as Mysterious Wave. Nice people hanging about as well. So maybe we should all just think about it before we jump in and criticise. Which is easy after all.
