So what do you do when you lose interest in Second Life?

While I'll likely never completely leave SL, I've been finding myself spending only five minutes a day in there, and I'm starting to think of my activities in Second Life in the past tense. Normally I'll have a drop in interest for a month or two and then snap back, and I'm not saying I wont, but never before have I thought of SL in the past tense. This may be the long slow slide...

I'll stay because of friends, but increasingly we're scheduling time together instead of randomly meeting. I'm also losing interest in scripting and building, and want more and more to work on "real" things like PHP and lamps stacks and MySQL, and getting out to exercise and see movies, so this isn't a bad thing.

Any advice anyone can give who has been in the same situation?

Thanks.

P.S. - SLU rocks! I'll be here forever! Well, unless Cris groans this thread...

must not be a merchant. if you were you would have to spend endless hours in SL dealing with the Sisyphean shit balls the commerce team flings at you.

When there's a lull in SL, it tends to be a combination of no one else I know being on much at the time, and having creator's block.

When that happens I just fill my time with other entertainment, usually playing games on Steam.

But it doesn't take more than a few days for me to miss the freedom and openendedness of SL over videogames, And I always eventually come back.

A few years back I went through this transition where I went from being a heavy user with a large group that had meetings, to the occasional log on I do now, mostly to keep up with my very good friend.

I had to "leave" because I was getting to the point of physical and emotional exhaustion. But the community around SL is something I won't ever be separated from completely. It's my village.

I will say though, make sure you have multiple ways outside of SL of staying in touch with the friends that matter the most to you. You never know when someone will lose their broadband connection or if someday SL will be gone.

My home desktop melted through the floor about ten months ago. My initial reaction was to consider what model and features I needed to replace it. Then it dawned on me that I'd built it primarily for Second Life. Having access to a small laptop and an iPad, the desire for a bulky expensive desktop, just to run Second Life, seems foolish. I'm spending the money on a good sized harp. That's my answer, get a harp, play!

I am hardly logging on at present and stopped completely for a few months recently.

I've been catching up on my reading and spending time using those things at the bottoms of my legs to go places. Its not as easy as teleporting, but it tends to be more interesting.

Oh, and Khamon - stop harping on the guy. (It had to be said)

These days I typically log on for a couple of hours each Thursday evening to gather together in a cave with a large group of other small furry animals and groove with a Pict.

Actually, it's to gather together on an outdoor dance floor with a few other people and listen to Scrim Pinion DJ.

That's about it. A far cry from 2006-7.

Since sept last year I've been trying to re-kindle some enthusiasm for the place and appear to have been resoundingly unsuccessful. For months now, pretty well everything I have to do for sl seems to be around dealing with the latest LL cock up. That bout of instability a few weeks back generated a raft of IMs from people blaming me for LL breaking their toys and appears to have taken away the last of my interest. Despite recently spending far too much on a desktop monster that I don't need for anything other than sl and probably spending half an hour going "oooh shadows!" yesterday I realised that I just don't want to make the time to go in. (Khamon has smarts, I think I'm a slow learner. Hey ho)

Soen, if the spark comes back then great but if your time has passed then it's over. If you've got over the digital equivalent of having your wallet stolen and your fingernails repeatedly pulled out by pliers then be happy for the good times (!) and enjoy the now.

If I feel like I've lost interest in Second Life, it's usually because I have been spending a lot of time in sex clubs, casinos, and erotic art exhibits. I'll lose interest in those things over time and find myself back in SL.

I used to be a SL quitter like you, then I took SWTOR to the knee.

I realized the story is fun but the graphics are awful, the Avatar creation is awfully limited, the shape choices are a joke, the skin textures looked like freebies, no long hair, not enough casual dresses around, the amount of groups to low (just one Guild), no daylight changes, the shadows to blocky, bad looking antialias, not enough scripted vehicles, people just standing around without talking, no good dance clubs, deserted social hubs, no funny sex toys...

And I ran back as fast as possible to Second Life.

I don't build myself, I just explore, shop, and freebie hunt. And I am having a hard time myself finding the excitement that I once had in SL.

I don't think I'm jaded, I'm just missing all of the activity that was happening a couple of years ago. It used to be that I didn't have enough time in a day to see everything I wanted to.

Nowadays in SL, I'm seeking and searching for something new that I might like. But I spend most of my time AFK in a skybox. :/

IMHO, the economy has tilted, so all of the frivolous, fun, and artistic builds are no longer affordable to a lot of creators.

That's my 2¢

Sorry for being a bit off topic. It's just my personal perspective of losing interest too.

I keep trying very hard to get it renewed (and I occasionally do) but it is few and far between.

I haz a sad.

I hope the creativity in SL might pick up again.

A friend showed me Guild Wars when I started getting "bored" with SL and some of the drama - and spent a happy 2-3 years exploring Tyria and the other lands and generally having fun whilst still meeting people (and the advantage you can kill stuff or blow it up and no one objects ). Then we tried Aion - which I'm back in now since it went Free to Play but I still have a house in SL and it's where I retreat with a dear friend and go dancing or chatting.

Variety is the spice of life they say, and to be honest I've found it to be true and SL is now nicely in perspective for me - can't be all bad as an approach I guess?

I've been less and less in SL for months now. Mostly log in to do business stuff. Now I play more other games.

I find myself taking longer and longer breaks from SL. Currently I don't even have it installed on any of my systems. Normally I'll find a PC Game I like and play that in the meantime. Or work on one of my hobbies or something.

I have slowly gone from averaging 40+ hours a week in world to substantially less than that. From logging in every day to logging in a few times a week. Most of the time now is restricted to about 3 sims now unless I am specifically invited somewhere.

It has been a slow decline. I could not point to any singular thing. Some of them have a RL basis. A lot of it has been LL stuff though. When I started I just saw them as a slow-moving place that had bitten off more than they could chew ... they wanted to help but did not have the resources. By actively doing the opposite of their requested feedback (the zindra migration, sl5b and their anti-kid policy, cutting off educational/nonprofit discounts, a lot of their internal 2.0 testers saying they hated the new interface but going ahead, too many more things to list) that opinion of them wound up changing.

Ooo - what kind of harp, and how much? I've wanted one for years now, but its hard to find the wire stringed celtic harps, or it was.

I normally log in every morning, though not so much on weekends lately, just been too tired to bother. But I do log on to do business stuff, and teach, and DJ. I suppose if I got bored enough I'd take off for a bit, and I might, one day - but I do enjoy those things.

Sometimes life just changes and you find yourself with less time for the things you used to do in your spare time. I'm an old veteran of SL (2004) and for most of those years I'd guess I was logged in about 30 hours a week. I have a lot in there that keeps me busy--longtime friends, building, running a hockey league, maintaining sims. This last year, real life has taken some big turns with my health and economic/work status. Things will eventually settle down, I suppose, but in the meantime, I am rarely able to log in.

Were you looking for advice on how to re-spark the interest, or how to let it go? To rekindle it, I'd have to say life must first allow it, and I don't know if you can force interest, but it helps if you can come up with a new project that will give you a sense of purpose and desire to be there. I know that's vague, but it's the only thing that usually works when you've lost interest in anything.

SL has always been peaks and valleys for me. Right now I'm in somewhat of a valley, not through lack of interest , but lack of time. Besides work, now that the weather is nice there are more things to keep me occupied that get me out and away from my desk.If you're inding things that interest you that keep you away, that's great. Go with them. Come back when you feel like it, but if not, don't worry about it. Interests and priorities change.
