I got bored with SL a few years ago and got obsessed with knitting (irl) in the same way I was once obsessed with SL. Now I'm learning to spin wool on a spinning wheel and spindles, knitting socks, sweaters, gloves, hats, etc., shopping for wool, participating in Ravelry (knitting forum with two million knitters worldwide), and considering owning goats and sheep (the sustainable thing Siggy's talking about)(but not really). I still log in once a week or so, but I'm not as attached to it as I ever was.

Pwning goats and sheep is fairly common in SL.

"Rift" kidnapped me. Several of my RL gamer friends are there and we use vent... returning to SL (something my buddies never really got into) just feels lonely, and I hate using voice chat with people I don't know. *ESPECIALLY* if I'm trying to multi-task and script at the same time.

Honestly though, SL is no longer the exciting frontier with untapped potential that it once was. It's solid, but stagnant. It lost the middle ground, of clever, inspired creators exploring what can be done with the medium. Now it's mostly touristy consumers and extremely elusive professional content creators.

If it had more of the laboratory/sandbox feel I'd be far more engaged in it. Without the ability to show off what I've made to people that understand the effort that went into it, it just feels as pointless as doing advanced math in front of kindergardeners. =(

I haven't sold my land off... I do expect to re-engage again from time to time and it still mostly pays for itself. But I haven't felt immersed in SL for 2 years now.

I've been kind of obsessed with knitting myself - I need to sit down sometime and figure out how to spin, but my spindles are a russian lace spindle and a trindle - neither are standard so its really hard to find instructions for either. I might have to break down and make my own.....

And I am about to pick up fimo again after a several year hiatus - I was really close to a degree in sculpture, and fimo is the easy media to use, without having access to foundries, the strength for power tools, or the money for marble.

I still enjoy making something new in SL, but ... It does seem like the wild west frontier is gone - and if you aren't good at marketing, it is harder to make a mark. If I'm going to make stuff in a MMOE I want folks to enjoy it.

I walk away for awhile until some creative idea strikes me. kinda like now... I haven't logged on my regular account in a good month, and only log my accounting alt for maintenance. when the mood strikes me again I'll be back to near daily. I don't give it much thought either way.

The only thing I'm looking for, really, is how other people have dealt with it. SL is such a time sink normally I'm really enjoying RL now I'm out of it. If the drive comes back, I'll do something then.

Thanks.

Ahem. As someone *cough* pointed out in another thread, it is springtime in your neck of the woods. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE! GO TO THE PARK AND FEED DUCKS OR FLY A KITE! GO! SHOO!

I am also still there and enjoy every aspect of it. Sure, there are occasional downtimes but I think the trick is not to get to much involved.
I do not have a business to run, I was never SL-married and I stopped taking responsibilities. My blog is not part of a feed which demands constant activity.

I love blogging, the most loved part is the independence and freedom to write what I want, when I want and about any topic I want. I do not have to check the statistics every day to stay in some feed, pressed between an army of invisible pony riders with fish-rabbit lips.

A google search hit "Ysanne naked" on my blog makes me smile instead of panicking and running in circles. One of the secrets to fun in SL is not taking it seriously. Relax, it's just a game after all. The whole life is a game but SL is a special one. A world where penises rain from the sky and as soon as you sit down on a couch you get raped by a unicorn.

Why so serious then?

If people would relax and step back a little, they could make fun of all the drama they fought in before.

I do. This makes several people very angry and is often considered a step into the wrong direction. But this applies to the creation of the world, too.

I do miss the amount of roleplay I once had, but taking part in it takes reliable online times, which I do not have. When I am in the mood for a break, I take it. And if I loose friends or rather contact list entries... who cares - the next interesting person is just a chat distance away.

I have the freedom to come and go, anytime I feel to. This is the trick. As soon as you have to "force" yourself to log on, you are doing it wrong.

I call SL a game all the time. I am also a member of a group in world that states as much.

A few people make money and all but people make money off of WOW and pretty much any MMO.

It's still a game. A game without a goal. Also IRC on steroids... LOTS of steroids.

Reinvent yourself. Make an alt. Try something different in SL that you never did before. Be a vampire. Role play in a medieval sim. Join a teaching group such as Builder's Brewery to teach people the skills you have. Learn a totally different skill, such as how to use Blender and get into mesh. 3D modelling can take you in directions where your skills will be useful outside of SL. Be a DJ. These are just a few ideas of a new direction to go in. Be brave and explore.

This can be worth doing as well. I have several alts and it can be refreshing not using my main account. I have given my alts unique "personalities" and heck, I find even trying to cross them over just feels "wrong". It's kind of odd and neat.

It's been a long time since I've used SL as anything other than a 3D character creator for my fiction. And if I could draw worth a damn I probably wouldn't need it for that.

All of which are infinitely better than some people do, which is to whine publicly about any change.

When I get bored/frustrated with SL, I'll often log in as an alt to simply play SL as a game. The alt I choose will invariably have a silly name.

Once I had a character going for montha who never left the initial starting newbie island. The idea was that single region was the entirety of SL. I would build in the sandboxes and once I placed copies of the little freebie penguin doll they had there all over the starting area to greet new players.

(1) Move to another virtual world with better graphics

(2) Then when that died, just learn more about 3D graphics in general, and almost come back to SL when the mesh project started

(3) Then when mesh arrived broken, lose interest in SL again, and write an open source book in my specialty:

Space Transport and Engineering Methods: - Wikibooks, open books for an open world

(text is nearing 1st draft, still have illustrations and references to do)

After 5 and a half years I'm not lost interest in Second Life. A couple of years ago a I was starting too and a friend got me interested in historical fighting sailing ships. I'd been sailing in SL for a while. I love the competition and strategy. I've also met some great friends.

Anyone who wants to stay in SL can find something and people to keep them interested.
