This is like some kind of groundhog day style replay of what the Redzone guy did, and before that the Gemini/INSILICO ban thingie I can't remember the exact name of (edit: this) and BEFORE THAT the Banlink system got abused. Namely, threaten to add people with criticism to their blacklists if they didn't shut up.

It just keeps happening, it's like a case study in how any figment of power drives the common man insane. Relevant lyrics, Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction.

'You take a mortal man
and put him in control
watch him become a god
watch people's heads a'roll..."

Voodoo was discussed months ago in this thread. At that time the general consensus was that it skirts the ToS, but doesn't violate it. I was skeptical then as I am now, especially with this blackmail crap.

I read the system description and shivered at ban lists updated in Real Time and data being stored outside of SL in secure database's to ensure 'floorless secure server configuration' (sic).

Echoe's of someone else's monitoring behaviour perhaps, but yet another self styled 'police operation' in SL - do these people only come to SL to poke their noses in someone else online time?

I got this note too. I was going to ignore it but, having read this thread, I've AR'd it (and him) for 'Harrassment - defaming individuals or groups' instead.

I think it's all just desperate hype, in hopes of selling a few of his lame HUDs, but this part is interesting (my emphasis):
Quote:
The next version of these HUDs, to be released imminently, will announce any nearby Greenzone griefers in local chat by name, along with any land owned by these griefers and any objects created by them.
I guess this means that these HUDs are constantly scanning all objects, comparing OBJECT_CREATOR against the GZ membership list, so HUD wearers are alerted to the presence of GZ-tainted prims.

Thing is, sensors only get the nearest 16 objects satisfying their filters, so the only way for this to be remotely complete would be to dynamically adjust the sensing angle until no more than 15 objects are returned. That should gobble up a hefty slice of Script time, and take a few minutes to make a single pass (at least in any location more developed than, say, a sandbox).

And that's just the sensing; then there's the comparing. Either the HUD itself has to compare against a monstrous huge list of GZ members (not likely: too big, and potentially far too dynamic), or it has to send all those creator names off to some comparator engine somewhere -- and at scale, that could get very costly (we could make sure of that) if it weren't for the fact that script comms are tightly throttled (so I don't see how it could work anyway).

Anyway, just to make sure those HUD-wearers get their money's worth, I think it's time for a large GZ recruiting effort. I know some shy alts who haven't joined nearly enough groups.

i might have a group slot for it myself. I´m on and off in the group, usually off when it´s calmer.

Banlink was a widely acceptable proactive system used by club and store owners for years to keep out griefers and trouble-makers. It started out with people sharing their property ban lists on a website. Then someone created a device that automatically added banned names to a networked system that was free for any landowner that joined the group. It was extremely helpful to mainland business owners who, back then, were practically helpless against griefers.

This is patently false, Travis (who was Banlink's primary developer) is someone with some of the greatest integrity I've ever encountered in SL and it's categorically untrue that he ever threatened to blacklist anybody who criticised Banlink — and lord knows he put up with a lot of uninformed criticism, first from Prokofy and people as ridiculous as her and then by any random whiner who encountered a situation that got them in trouble.

Towards the end it got abused, but not by Travis and the abuse was why Travis shuttered the entire thing all together.

what gets me is that the GZ group has been silent..i've been in it the whole time since right after it opened..and maybe once a month maybe twice i would see someone come in..usually they had found an old RZ prim or something..

other than that it's been dead quiet from what i have seen..
then yesterday getting this notice from monkey boy..

i just started to laugh because i had totally forgotten about voodoo or him or even the GZ group..
so i AR'd the notice showing the profile that came uip..then opened the notecard and Ar'd that as well for the things in it..

i figure he must be hurting for business and maybe jump starting GZ on him will generate some business or something..

i just know that i haven't seen the group pop talking about anything with him or the group pop up in awhile really..

oh wait there was the other day ..someone came in and said something smartass and nobody answered.. before that..a month or more maybe since i seen it pop..

either way..he can take his threats and shove them up his butt star for all i care.. he sounds like all talk anyways with empty silly threats..
Ban me..this way i know who has it and i can avoid their market place..it's their tier not mine lol

REGULATORS!!! LETS RIDE!!!!
LOL i always loved the Llamas and that little shout hehehe

ETA: the funny thing to me is..Everyone in GZ group is already on his bot hunter list anyways..so it's not like things are gonna change for us...we have been on his list for over a year now...
if we get close to one of those things it kicks us from where ever the place was..
it tells us we are a member of the GZ group and a bunch of other bla bla crap then boots us..some it tells in local that they are bots ..me it just said i was a group member...
So really new system or old..we are on it anyways..he just wanted to remind us i guess lol

Under today's TOS, Banlink is probably illegal.

Banlink never aggregated and correlated IP addresses and alt accounts so no, it would still be fine.

Not the creator himself, but individual users absolutely abused it, sorry about the phrasing there.

But any vigilante group like Greenzone (not sanctioned by Linden Lab) that thinks they are doing 'good' for the community usually end up harrassing and defaming individuals or groups as their standard practice.

I´m sorry, how is GZ a vigilante group? You ever even saw what it´s about or what people discuss in it? the only thing the group does is to help people protect their privacy, wtf are you on about?

They may not mean to be a vigilante group. But any Second Life group that tells people not to purchase certain products is defaming and purposely undermining a merchant in Second Life. It's against the TOS. We can blog about SL merchants and say what we like about them on third party forums, but we aren't really allowed to use a SL group to defame any SL person. No matter what their crime is.

you seem to think we go on raids or something..hehehe
the group sits there and people come to it for advice or help..
if someone says something came up on their hud ..most times it's old prim stuff..
we don't go on AR raid parties..
it's basically a group that has a hud that could pick up on scanners..that and help with keeping someones SL secure from the leaks in it..

we would inform them about safe SL settings with the media and stream stuff and what viewers had media and stream filters and things like that..

if someone found something that may have been a new scanner..a member or two may have went to try to see what it was..but it was never mass raid parties or vigilanti type stuff..
just like the RZ threads here..it was more to educate people on how to have a safer secure SL and to try to put as much misinformation to rest as possible..

i'm not gonna say there hasn't been drama in the group..the whole JLU thing showed that stuff hehehe..but there hasn't been griefer activity...

if their has ..it's been by individuals that may be in the group..but they would have been acting on their own.. not in behalf of the group..
the core group was about becoming educated and helping to educate..

the whole voodoo thing started when i was on summer break last year..
i came back to find out i was on some list that this thing calls bots and kicks from the sim or land i guess...
i was like what the heck is voodoo and who the heck is this monkey guy? lol
