Thank flying spaghetti monsters for rigged mesh hair (100% spoiled by it now btw; I archived away (stuffed in boxes) all my old prim hair to make it a little easier on my inventory) -- that's one less thing I'll have to resize/reposition if I ever tweak my head size again.
When I started to pay attention to the height slider (finally set it to feet instead of meters) I promptly made my main avi shorter. Not my RL height (considered kid height in SL, at least at the time) but it didn't feel comfortable having her be 6+ feet tall when RL me was only 5'0".
I finally settled on 5'8" for my main, which seems (to me, anyway) to look OK without additional tweaking (I'm still uncomfortable with the edit sliders ).
My alt, however, I left at her default height of around 6'+. She is Sidhe, after all.
Both now wear shapes from the same shop, Body and Soul, which has affordable nicely-proportioned shapes for us slider-challenged types.
My elf self also has a variety of shapes she got on hunts before the one she now wears, none with the invisible horse thing going on, but a number of them with the frowny face and/or too-wide hips.
To each their own, I guess.

I wish I could make my shapes the height they're "supposed" to be, but when I first made a lot of them, there was only the incorrect way of measuring height available and as a result they're all about 18 centimeters/7 inches too tall.

Redoing them all would be too daunting, plus I don't know how well it would even work for the ones that are supposed to be around 160. I know I'd pretty much never get them into a gown again, that's for sure, since I already struggle with skirts all the time.

I've sort of adopted that as my acceptable SL deviation; I decide how tall I want a new shape to actually be and then I add 18 centimeters. Ultimately, the height is limited by proportions; I try not to go over 8 1/4 head tall (I think around 8 looks best in SL, but a lot of it comes down to what you're used to) and I also try to keep my head at max 60 so hair fitting won't be so hard. That puts a pretty hard upper limit on height.

I both agree and disagree. SL does allow you to look as you want and you should absolutely take advantage of that. But it is also easy to end up not really looking like you actually intended.

Its very easy in SL to become blind to unintended exaggerations. I've got older versions of shapes and when I switch back and forth between those and newer versions I can't understand how I could have been so blind to some of the unintended flaws.

Sometimes, I try "commercial" shapes and then I switch into one of my own. My initial reaction is almost always "my god, I am so fat". So looking at something for too long does risk making it the norm for your visuals, even if it has problems that you did not intend.

Skirts are a big issue for me., because of my height.

That is a problem too. My height is about 5'2". When I'm in a formal gown for Franks or Bellas parts of it always are in the floor.

*I think I understand why many women want to create a perfect glamorous avie in SL, but unless the typist goes for non human or purposely unusual, I tend to find "normal female avies" more attractive than Barbie dolls. Normal attractive women are sometimes tall, sometimes short, sometimes very curvy, and sometimes not so curvy, but still very cute.

I appreciate the work women put into their avies and wanted to let Maggy know that glamorous is great, but so called "plain" is sexy too ;-)

*I have a weird, dry sense of humor that doesn't always come through in print, so I sure hope it was clear that I was being silly and goofy but the compliment was still genuine ;-)

The height sliders on Exodus tell me I'm 5'11" and I still have this problem with some dresses.

I am aware that this look creates strong opinions. Some people love it and think it's adorable, some people hate, hate, hate it (I and my friend Kitti have an uncharitable but amusing name for the shape which I shall not put here, and if you want to know you can send me a message) and I don't want that discussion.

We know you hate it.

Or like it.

What I want to know is where it came from. Was there a thing out of SL that inspired it? Who started it? Why? I mean, I understand the creation of a counter-beauty aesthetic... but was it that? was it an originally ironic thing that people are now doing unironically? Was the thinking, like, I can't make a realistic girl shape so let's make a cartoonish one?

Enlighten me! I am really curious and intrigued as the origin of this aesthetic.
I know exactly where it came from but I'm under elf obligation to never tell anyone who made it.

The Invisible Pony look has begun to affect mesh clothing design. >.
I thought I'd get my alt some more clothes, so I did a bit of hunting. Several of the hunt items I've gotten on both av's have been mesh, and usually the shape is different from the avatar's, but OK with the alpha. But not this time.
This is my alt in non-mesh jeans: Snapshot_009 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
and these are the mesh ones: Snapshot_006 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
not as bad from the front, as from the back: Snapshot_005 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
Actually, it looks worse in motion than it does in the photos, but I think you can see it anyway.

Are you sure the causation didn't go the other way? I mean, maybe there was some mesh item of clothing that became popular among some group of people but it was poorly fitted and they changed their shape to fit the mesh, then others saw them in this shape and followed suit, never knowing what clothing item caused them to use that shape in the first place?

this started before the implementation of mesh on the main grid.

To be frank the jeans pictured in your post aren't as bad as some. There's one particular brand that comes to mind where the double-wide crotch is visible from a mile away.

I have this huge aversion to cartoony shapes like Nylon's. They freak me out to the point where I either won't shop there or read that blog.
I think it's really cool when people do something different but for some reason I just can't really look at it. Screw my mind.

And no thanks to fish face. I always wanted to know where it sprung from and this thread has been very insightful to that.

I have debating whether to post this, because I may get strung up by the masses....

Although I am not a fan of the pony riding look, to be honest, its none of my business what other avatars choose to look like, you can be 8ft tall, a tiny, have boobs bigger than your head for all I care, it's your SL, your choices.

However I do get annoyed when people take it upon themselves to out avatars as 'ugly' or 'fugly' on SLU when the person they are outing isn't around to defend themselves.

Because, you know, I *could* take it upon myself to pick apart your avatar choices and have a good laugh about it with my friends, at your expense.

For the most part, I am glad their is a variety of shapes in SL, because most of time, most of the avatars I see are so fucking boring, all cookie cutter replicas, wearing the same clothes, the same hair the same skin and having similar bland completely forgettable shapes, you couldn't distinguish anyone in a crowd.

I hope that my avatar is distinctive enough that I am recognisable.
