I believe the style itself is called "uglycute" and is based around the idea of making something very exaggarated and "ugly", blocky, bright colors, lots of prints and accessories, exaggarated shape in a way opposite to "pretty" or "beautiful" in contemporary culture, and instead being quirky. Part of the idea is to be somewhat disquieting and strange, to cause a sort of strong reaction. It strikes me as a sort of nerd chic; often huge, dark glasses are included, or big, blocky bags. It also reminds me of those plastic shoes everyone seemed to be into last year - are theyc rocs? And those big felt boots with the fake fur on the top edge.

I'd place it as an offshoot of grunge and ganguro; both had a saggy, layered, exaggarated aesthetic.

My mom got some [crocs] recently - no one else had sandals like she wanted, and they did. And they have some nice styles, sandals and even pumps.

I had an interesting experience at Collabora88 the other day. I was shopping and a girl IMed me and she said, "Your av is lovely except, for the eyes." I wear red demon eyes as a signature thing for my avatar, back since I lived on the spooky Duchy of Darkmere as a noob. I cammed over and the girl critiquing me had that standard shape, long hair with bangs and hipster glasses.

My faun alt actually has a look similar to the pony-girls, but she's supposed to be insanely exotic and natural. I use her as a display for fantasy clothing that are too over the top for Charlemagne. She's not supposed to be a normal human being, but SL has its own bizarre standards..

Enlighten me! I am really curious and intrigued as the origin of this aesthetic.

Ummm... I think I finally found the source.

Definitely NSFW... or much of anyplace, really.

Nah. She doesn't have the skinny legs and space between the thighs. I've seen this shape around SL too, though.

I see this avatar shape having origins in a few areas of rl.

SL is like playing dressing up for some people. Maybe it's an involuntary influence of earlier childhood play?

It's interesting to see the different country editions on the site below!

International Sindy dolls

The need for some to become thinner and thinner in RL causes huge problems for a RL body. It's a sad indictment of todays media and societal pressures on many. In SL you can get thinner without looking bony. An ideal for some in this rl situation. Do they therefore make and exaggerate their avatars to appear how they would like to be seen in RL? In SL they can have thin legs without their knees, ankles and hips sticking out, they get that "beautiful" unattainable gap between their legs without looking like a living corpse.

Image in spoilers because it's not nice to see, though still safe for work. (no nudity)

That Spanish Sindy doll is very close to the avatar shape in question, thigh gap, wide hips, too-high crotch, and all.
I wonder if the designers who show their clothes on these shapes, or the bloggers who blog them using these shapes, have these dolls?

So what's with the super low crotch pants? That was a thing for gangster wannabes but now there are tons of mesh sweatpants for girls like that!

They are called "Deep Crotch", "Drop Crotch" or "Harem" pants. They were big in RL fashion for Spring and Summer of this year, apparently. Google any of those names and you will see tons of examples.

The gangsta thing is a bit different, in that they are usually baggy all over, and work low on the hips. There is an idea that those developed as a copy if prison clothing.

The pants where they don't split into legs until very far down? I hate those so much, they're crazy uncomfortable because they restrict your legs unless you wear them like old man pants.
