I promise I will pay Philip Rosedale through this new venture.

That should keep his lawyers busy for a while.

me: You know what really gets me about Philip?
xxxxx: What's that?
me: I can never decide if he actually believes what he's saying, or thinks others believe what he's saying, or both.
xxxxx: Yeah, that's what the whole company deals with.

Argh.
So let me get this right. If you do not meet your goal you lose money but if you do all you get is the fact that you did not lose money (plus reaching your goal)?

Why not just promise the money to your partner? Sure, the money is not really lost if you commingle finances but the same emotional impetuous applies (you would react to 'losing' money). If you need more of an incentive make the deal with a good friend or a family member, people who you would gladly give money too if they were in need.

because if you did it yourself you would not be giving phillip cash to hold like a bank does and use as leverage for other activities.

Have you ever met some of the people on the net? Even people savvy with money in RL can have completely different attitudes when they go online.

The year thing maybe, as it is longer than the average attention span for even good ideas, but it risks becoming an internet meme for a bit.

Can we say that Philip's next project after this one will have been built over broken promises ? Something sounds very wrong in that...

Seven promises already......

and if Ben doesn't finish watching that show Philip has already recouped his startup!

There is money to make on that site if you have a good lawyer. You could bet that you are going to lose the money you bet then sue him.

What puzzles me the most is the fact that he keeps coming up with all these weird "work for not exactly money but goodwill and bean soup" schemes, and a new one every few months or so on top of it.

If one of them would actually have worked by now, wouldn't he stick to it, instead of scrapping them like old bread?

Imagine if you had a weird and quirky sense of humor and were rich enough to give it its head.

This is phil riffing on a theme, and throwing whatever comes out at the wall to see if it stick...

And hey, that's cool, I get it... but either he's taken up drugs, or is seriously sleep deprived for this to come out.... That's not cynicism on my part, it's just rational. I would think Philip fits the model of serial inventor... his model of success is to be able to keep tossing out and trying ideas, no matter how good or bad, just to see if there's anything there.

have fun phil, but seriously, get some sleep... some of these ideas are trending darker...

This reminds me---one of the sf/anthology series (possibly the new Twilight Zone or new The Outer Limits...or another of the 1990s revivals) had an episode about a service that you pay to ensure that you quite smoking, or lose weight, or any thing else that you needed more than mere will power to accomplish.

The kicker was that the 'service' would surveil you for the rest of your life to prevent you from backsliding.

Will Philip's site employ agents to check on the truthfulness of claims of those who say they HAVE lost the weight or HAVE stopped smoking....?!?!?

In which the wife suffered punishment for the backsliding, instead of any financial loss.

It took several treatments.

He gets to decide which challenges he'll accept. (I checked. I was thinking of pledging $5 that I'd get around to running another service at the First Church of Rosedale before the next St. Torley's Day, because the prospect of having that on the website amused me. Turns out there's also a $100 minimum.)

(As an aside, it's his 10th rezday today!)

from what I remember of the movie it only took one and the wife was merely the first one, it was a progressive scheme. the short story followed the same line.
