Update on Last names

Posted by Rodvik:

https://my.secondlife.com/rodvik.lin...9e8f0001002204

"Quick update on last names. Just fyi the team here has been working on solutions for this and it is taking longer than we thought. identity is important so we want the ability to have that wonderful shared experience the old last name system had but also not lose sight of the fact that many people really do not want a name given to them, they want freedom to define their identity, finally we want to consider adding meaningful things like titles etc that can be awarded by the community or some other methods. Anyway bit more complicated than initially thought but progress is being made. Will have a baked plan sometime in February we think."

Really hoping they do not add community awarded titles. It will be like the rating system all over again.

Another half brained idea (community titles) that will be bartered, bought, sold, corrupted, etc.

What I want, and Linden Labs won't provide, is a way to change EXISTING USER NAMES permanently. Hell I would even pay a nominal fee to do so.

Agreed - we already have people buying up old avatars, this could make it a lot worse.

1. Bring back the old last-name system as it does as Rod says give 'wonderful shared experience '

2. Allow all 'residents' with one name to have a one-off change of name - the process involves a change of all their posessions and a note placed in their profile stating what their original name was.

3. Retain Display Name process 'as is' but charge small fee for using it.

I'm wondering if the team assigned to bake the last name plan is consulting customers to ask them what they want.

This update by Rod on last names and awarding titles:
Quote:
Thanks all. yeah its a sensitive topic we want to get right. There are many people who really dislike having a last name forced on them from a list on the other hand there are many who love having that last name bond. As for titles, I hear you on the competition thing but there are perhaps other cool ways of getting things as an option fi you want. Length of being a customer etc.
Maybe you start out as a 'noob' and then become a 'resident' when you have completed a Linden Realms type of assault course that is designed to make you use all the key parts of the UI, that would be a better approach . Or you could get achievement badges like in the scouts and guides: 'helping a noob', 'tasteful building', 'griefer reporting', 'prostitution'... Or maybe adventure awards like: 'Driving the length of Route 1 without getting logged out', 'Sailing across the Blake Sea with boat intact', 'Fighting off the multiple-tentacled sex creature'...

Here's a thought, GIVE YOUR USERS A CHOICE TO ENTER A NAME OR PICK FROM A LIST1 How many times have I felt like Lear screaming at the screen WHY...WHY? Rod knows his users fall into two distinct groups that each take personal naming convention seriously. Why not serve both.

Linden Lab have too often forced a single solution on their users when a choice could've been just as easily offered. Why?

More from Rod:
Quote:
Thanks for all this folks, please keep it coming. To clarify in Feb we hope to have a proposal to put out for feedback not implementing something without input. There is also a significant chance of leaving the name system as is if we cant come up with something that makes you the customer say "wow, yes!" Identity is extremely important....
so any changes have to be universally regarded as a good thing.

How much of the zeroth normal form database is still keyed to the first space last name field? Yes, I mean single field.

You wouldn't find any at my house. I can't make it past "zeroth", but I can still appreciate it!

They asked that the first time, and then *entirely ignored* what people said in favor of the bullshit they trotted out to *cause* all of this.

completely agree.

i'm not sure why, with an issue like this, LL cannot find a way to accommodate /both/ sets of user preferences.

i am on the side that hated having to pick a surname from the list and much prefer the "current" implementation of name creation, over the old way of creating an account name.

But...it seems like they could just as easily work for both groups. With a first name blank-slot, then a surname list. The top option being "Fill in your own surname", for people who don't want to have to pick something off the rest of the list.

Course.. i do see some issues with letting people fill in their own surname, and that is people filling it in with "Vanity" names companies have shelled out money to reserve just for them (like Anshe's people). So those sorts of names would have to be reserved some how.

But i wouldn't mind if they opened up "old' surnames too (like allow people to create accounts with "oldbie" surnames - although i know others seem to dislike that idea - liking their "special, rarely seen, old timer surnames to be unique").

so dunno! but it would sure name it easier on whatever Linden is tasked with the job of coming up with new surnames. If they were allowed to recycle old ones.

They reserve certain names even now. You can't use "linden" in a name field afaik. (either user or display.)

I've NEVER understood why there aren't two blank fields for firstname lastname allowing people to just choose their own, completely, or choose to leave lastname blank for a mononym.

Someone DID use it, though I think what they did was combine first name with linden. e.g Jolenelinden. NOT me! I believe they did it in fun, not mischief.

They got temp banned. Ultimately restored after folks had an upcry about it.

Lesson of the story....Don't be messing wit DA Lindens, even in jest. Haha.

They also promised that when last names were retired they would never be available again. So they can't allow completely free entry of a last name; at the very least they have to exclude all the retired ones. That will annoy the people who happen to have one of the retired names (such as my own SL last name, Marquez) as their RL last name or as a last name that they use in other online contexts. On the other hand, allowing people to pick the retired names would annoy some of their oldest customers, which is usually a bad move.

They need to allow you to type any last name you want, and screw historical names. Blocking them would be ridiculously bad.
