A while back I stumbled across this SL online profile site and found two profiles for me, only they weren't me...

The first profile is of a male from Grant City, MO, which is strange since I'm female and have never been anywhere near that location. The second profile is some lady from Vancouver Canada, another place I've never been near. Neither of the profiles have pictures that look even remotely like my avatar, and they both have done things like join groups and upload photos.

After a brief skim through the TOS, I found out that impersonating other avatars is frowned upon. So, I contacted the site owner in-world and and we had a brief chat about this issue. Unfortunately, having indisputable proof that I'm the actual, one and only Vaelissa Cortes was not good enough of a reason to take action, oh well. I should mention that this was a while back and after sending a polite notecard or two, nothing has been done yet.

That said, I'm not particularly concerned about impersonators on some random, little known (and seemingly dead) website. It does, however, make a decent starting story for this thread.

Now, here comes the main question. Has anyone ever impersonated your SL avatar anywhere, and did you find out why? If not, what are your theories?

Impersonated? I don't think so. But some wanker who hates my guts (and the rest of me too) decided to make a Sredni Eel account in Inworldz to keep me out. That lasted about as long as it took for me to contact the founders and prove who I am.

Like mentioned above someone took my avatar name in another virtual world. I contacted the owners and got my avatar name. I don't thing they were impersonating though, just got a list from somewhere and made a bunch of different names of existing merchants in SL.

I have been told my name is in use on one or two MUCKs nowadays. It's weird, and it niggles at me sometimes, but otherwise I'm fairly positive most of the searches out there for me are actually resulting in me, even if they are for websites/forums I haven't touched in years. (Except peekyou.com is wrong. Wtf?)

Yup. I pissed off an asshat once, in my early days in SL.

He created an avatar called JoIene Benoir. Capital I in place of the L. It effectively worked because it looked the same in SL.

He would then run around nekkid wearing a freenis, and generally misbehaving, at a location where I spent most of my time.

I received a few perplexed im's from friends, wondering if I had lost my mind, after some of his stunts.

It really threw them, until one day when he was there WHILE I was.

I think his account is gone now, but for quite some time he was a hooker in SL, using that name.

I wonder if that site just took random SL user names and quickly made up fake profiles to try to bring in real users during search or whatever. Both those profiles joined the site, added a bunch of groups on the same day as joining then never did anything again. Still it is weird.

Noone has ever impersonated me, I don't think I've ever made an enemy in SL. I'm just too cute to hate.

Yup. Her name is Carmi. She often claims to own my theatre. She claims to have won it in a wrestling match against an owl. She has tried to sell the theatre to no less than three hundred potential buyers ranging from Japanese business men claimingit would make a great sushi restaurant to a blind clown suggesting it was the interior of a clown car. I have tried sacking her but haven't had much luck keepingher away.

There is a rl person with my avatar name. I had no idea when I chose it, but found out years later. I feel a bit responsible for the caretaking of the name, because if I went out and was a virtual slut, and then if she had a job interview and her potential boss googled it and found out, I'd feel horrible. I hope she cares about my reputation too. She'd better not turn out all skanky on me

I did my annual google of my account names last year and discovered that a little girl (she must be about 18 months old now) shares one of my account names.. Proud dad had posted a pic.

So she's the only human on the internet with that name. It makes me go growling at the porn sites that still occasionally use that name as a tag (the other account has an astonishingly large google presence which porn sites use as a basis for deciding which tags to use to lure unwary punters) even more diligently.

I've got to say I think the parents had extremely good taste in naming her that and I envy her the name as I think it's very pretty.

Pretty sure nobody has ever impersonated my avatar, it just wouldnt be worth it, but I did once get accused of being somebody's alt.

I was peacfully minding my own business watching a firework display when a girl approached me saying she knew who I was and was stalking her. Apparently her ex boyfriend was also called Anvil, she went mad at me then muted me while her friend unloaded on me lol.

To my knowledge no-one's impersonated me. There's nothing on a google search that isn't me. Nobody else wants to be a ginger nerd I did sign up for that myplace thing though.

I made the mistake of giving myself not only a very generic name, but one in which the first and last names form a popular character pairing in the TV show Primeval. Needless to say, my SL profile is not one of the first Google results. I'm pretty sure it's not even in the first ten pages.

Haven't seen anyone else using Abiconcenettaline de Graeves (my display name for RP), but frankly I can't see why anyone would want to...

I've had a few people wearing my avatar and posing as me in world while crashing sims. Also sometimes someone uses my name to post Harold comments which can get pretty confusing because I post there sometimes too.

Hmm.. prompted by this thread, I've done a bit of googling and discovered Innula Zenovka's Wishlist, Registry and Product Picks | Wishpot, which I know I've not signed up for (but since I see I can use it request cash gifts, which are always highly acceptable, I might rethink that).

That slcamz site asks for a password. It might just be worth pointing out that curious users should not enter their SL passwords, or any real passwords there.

That one really is you, in an alternate dimension. The old SLX wish list was really Wishpot with a reskin job for SL. There was some way to reclaim those accounts now that SL logins don't work with them any more, but I forget what had to be done.

When it asked me for a password to follow that link, I just clicked "cancel" without entering anything and it gave me the page, nevertheless. But yes, obviously don't enter anything real there.

ETA -- it seems to have picked me up from an announcement I posted in Events here and at the Official Forum about the Adult Hub Christmas Party.
