Direct Delivery moves another step closer

The code changes for the 'outbox' to replace the 'magic boxes' (and lots of other code tidies) seem to have gone into dev version 3.2.8.248331 today - so I expect it will become available at least for testing on the main grid with Viewer 3.2.8.

Does this mean that anyone wishing to be a merchant on SLM will need to have at least viewer 3?

That might be a good way to push some people forward.

I'm assuming that the magic boxes will hang around for some time to come, but it is yet another feature to persuade people away from Viewer 1, which seems LL's strategy.

Thread Title of the Week
I've never heard of this before and am curious. Is there another thread on this topic or a link to more details? If an object to be sold by SLM is NOT in-world in a Magic Box, then where is it stored for delivery?

They seem to show a lack of imagination with the Outbox icon, it looks a bit too much like Inventory to me.

...and they also seemed to have messed up the transparency for 'Inventory' - it now appears more see-through than the other panels when inactive.

Bard, the Lindens seldom talk about Direct Delivery. When I can get information I put it in my blog.

The idea is we will have an OUTBOX folder, or some other meaningful name, that will hold the things we want to appear in the Market Place.

We have been told there will be a change over period during which the Magic Box and Inventory Folder will both work for placing items in the MP.

The 3.2.8 viewer I have from earlier in the week (248331) does not show the features I see in the Direct Delivery Project Viewer. That viewer is for use in ADITI where the feature is being tested. See: Direct Delivery Beta Post or see the series of articles.

The code going into the development viewer can be seen here: Viewer-Dev. Hitomi knows more than I do about reading the repo comments.

you'd think theyd call the folder "Marketplace"

obviously it won't work on vaniLLa v1 (but what does these days?) but TPVs will be able to implement it.

You can only get the outbox once you tweak some of the debug settings, and it looks like some of it is still disabled server side, or in the C++ somewhere, but at least it is getting closer.
And could I just add that Nalates' blog is indeed a great place to keep up-to-date with Direct Delivery and many other features that the Lindens don't talk about much.

I wonder how much content will disappear when they turn the old magic boxes off.

Maybe now LL can worry less about the llGiveInventory issues.

It appears they have included the Direct Delivery code in 3.2.8 Beta in preparation for a "switch-on" later this month, presumably when it moves from Beta to the main stream. From the BetaViewer 3.2.8 Release Notes:
Quote:
Feature Highlights

Merchant Outbox

Merchant Outbox will be used by Direct Delivery, a new Marketplace system that will help sellers more efficiently list and manage their items on the Marketplace. We plan to launch Direct Delivery in late February. In the meantime, if you would like more information, or would like to try out Direct Delivery on the Aditi Test Grid, please see the Direct Delivery Beta Instructions

I have been analyzing my sales for a while. Exactly one quarter comes from in world sales. As soon as DD is working right I am ditching all my land and downgrading to basic. More play money for fashion and tipping.

I'm curious... what is it about direct delivery that changes the picture for you? Couldn't you have done this (essentially) with the magic box?

coulda sorta but still have to rez the magic boxes and i have more boxes than most to ensure speedy delivery. However I have never bothered analyzing sales location until a few months ago. This is clearly a case of LL not thinking things through fully. 5% of my sales on SLM is a drop in the bucket compared to all of my revenue going back to LL for tier. Most of SL is about to make the same move which will likely wipe out large estates.

But then, given how much each person employed by Linden Lab hates and despises the people paying their paychecks and making sure they have health and dental insurance for them and their children, maybe they secretly want LL to file bankruptcy so they can become unemployable and live under a bridge.

What?! That would be unprecedented!

Thanks for the explanation. I had been thinking that pretty much anyone who was going to drop land would have done so by now. Then again, not being a merchant, I have no idea how painful or limited the magic boxes are in practice.

I'm not disagreeing with you that a lot of folks will ditch store fronts completely with this move. Hell, we're already seeing it. I get notices on one or two a month closing, and hear about as many more from others. But I do disagree that this will "wipe out" estates, unless you mean individual sims, and then I can see that happening.

I can't speak for other estate companies, but the majority of our sims are Residential. Of those that aren't, we have more Residential/Commercial mixed sims than straight Commercial. The only thing I foresee from the Death of the Magic Box is turning more Commercials into Mixed and/or Mixed into pure Residentials.

People dumping their store fronts means they'll have more free spending money. I'm willing to bet some of those people will invest in private places to chill out with their friends and family, or maybe even expand the ones they have.

Wipe out estates? Hardly. We'll just have to adjust our business model. Which is what any good company does.
