Thank you, Qarl! Official viewer to get alignment tool

Just seen this in Qarl's blog:

Quote:
thank you, back

recently - a very kind soul sent me a chunk of money to say thank you for my deformer work.

it means a lot to me - to know my work is so valued, and respected.

to say thank you back - i’m releasing my alignment tool under LL’s contributor agreement, so they may include it into their official viewer, and everyone in SL can have access to it.

thank you, kind soul.

The question is will LL actually implement it though?

Why would they not? As I understand it, it, or the V3 code, needs a bit of tweaking to get it to look right with V3, but what could be the objection otherwise? OK, they parted on bad terms, but they've forgiven each other enough for LL to adopt the mesh deformer and work on it together.

Not necessarily. Best to keep credit anonymous to avoid taking credit away from the person in the case it wasn't from LL.

I use the packer mode of this tool quite a bit. Great work.

I just recall past people who have developed patches and fixes for the viewer that LL never integrated. I hope that won't be the case here.

Oh, hallelujah! I hope the alignment tool gets in, that thing one of the reasons I like to use Firestorm now.

Hmm... does this mean that Qarl is some sort of viewer piñata? Hit him with money, and viewer enhancements fall out of him?

Not adding this would be....well, I'd say absurd but that's business as usual for the Lab so this news doesn't really excite me yet. Until I hear for certain LL will add it to the official viewers it doesn't mean much other than qarl is awesome, but we already knew that.

There's plenty of cases where people submitted fixes/patches/features, and there have been so many things that would be so painfully simple for LL, yet they've never made it into LL's viewers.

it's fairly simple to do by hand, but it takes up time that can go to actually creating

I think 'to get' is a bit optimistic at this point. IMO the bigger (and for the forward looking potentially more exciting) story is that the hatchet that seemed to be in the shadows (looking even at the text at the bottom of the align tool video) seems to be buried, and the chance to continue working on SL on his own terms appears to agree with Qarl. The Lab gets access to the tools and the users are picking up the tab.

Of course I won't count these 2 birds (align and deformer) until they're out of the bush.

Although I think this is great news, I'm with everyone else in saying I'll believe it when I see it. For new residents with no prior 3d building experience, this is one tiny step towards retention. One of the most frustrating things a new resident can do is try and align the prims on their first foray into building. Not everyone is handy with math even if you can have your computer calc app open. You still have to understand basic principles to grasp what it is you want to achieve mathematically. A person who may have strong math skills can build with ease and a little work even if their artistic vision is lacking, while an artistically gifted person may fail miserably trying to count the change in their pocket let alone trying to calculate a radial array of prims. And those who can do it all....you suck :-P But seriously, I think this small improvement would be a huge confidence builder in novice creators. Do the right thing LL....USE IT!

I always have the calc app open when I'm building, I didn't even know the alignment tool was in Firestorm, I need to look at TPV's more often, I hope it does come to the main viewer.

Nalates suggests that we visit the jira and watch both VWR-360 and, even though it's been closed as a duplicate of VWR-360, STORM-468 as a way of indicating our interest in seeing Qarl's patch adopted.

Qarl seems to know what the people want, and I give him massive props for his wonderful prim alignment tool and his work on the deformer. I would love to see him back on the team and actively trying to push in things we love and use on a daily basis.
