| What LL is really doing: 2D text games for IPad Curious as to why LL is steadily closing off all channels of communication with SL customers and SL appears to be increasingly falling apart at the seams? Here it is: 'Second Life' Inventors Expanding Gaming Universe - DailyFinance Yep. I expect the October announcement to end with "Thanks for all the fish!". |

| Linden Lab makes tools that let you make worlds. So it's consistent. But still unexpected. It seems bizarre for it to come from LL, but a text-adventure making tool for mobiles does sound neat and it would be something I'd grab no matter who made it. I don't think the same would apply for most SL users, at least not the SL community as it exists today, but maybe it would for the original SL demographic made of world creating enthusiasts. I love being on the game creating scene in SL so this is cool news to me. I know a few people I'm excited to tell. |

| So, Ann why can't Linden Labs be doing more than one game/platform like Blizzard does? Why does this have to be the end of Second Life as we know it. Although economically one the best things that could happen to me would be for SL to shut down. |

SL Join Date: 06/12/08 | It makes sense but I certainly hope they aren't tieing themeselves too close to iOS - they should be looking at Android and Windows 8. A creation space in 2.5D is very good news for SL and has natural links (just think of the web profiles) - I think they stand more chance in this area than taking on Zynga or Activision directly. |

I am not real happy about SL having apparently been back burnered with increasingly serious defects landing in the viewer development as well as simulator code defects of a serious nature. (For instance I used to be able to run at ultra graphics level but not anymore and it is the viewer code that changed for the worse. And if that code lands in production then most people with nvidia cards are going to be out of luck.) People are paying for a service and LL is using the money on something else instead of concentrating on quality of service for their paying customers. Sure. Diversify. But concentrate on high quality across the board. Not bleed a solid revenue generator into oblivion for a high risk startup that might not get any traction. | |

Kind of an odd choice for LL. You would think they would be looking to leverage their mighty date base that is the Second Life Market place into other games. Free to play games and micro payments for in game products are the future of on line gaming and no one does that better than Second Life.

SL Join Date: 06/12/08 | The amount of effort that SL are expending on both the viewer and server side suggest that it has not been back-burnered - the trouble is that their QA process is next to non-existant (probably because they still have no QA Manager at LL) and that they rushed in mesh despite it breaking a lot of stuff that was fixed earlier. |

| Who said anything about backburner? Do you honestly think LL is going to make a text-based game maker and not also allow the same tools to be used for SL? People have been begging for more game-making related tools in SL since forever. |

| Rodvik's spoken up on twitter confirming this ridiculous article is just purely one blogger's speculation.... so please don't worry about it. It originated from he had made a statement once saying his favorite genre of games was 2D text-based and this one comment got morphed into the idea that Linden Lab is busy using all their resource to make a 2D text thingy on mobile!

My Mood: SL Join Date: 03/17/2004 | I am happy to see them diversifying. Hopefully it means some of the people that we like will be able to keep their jobs longer if they want to, and it will make LL healthier and stronger. They should have diversified years ago. I am really happy to see some innovative thinking at the lab. |

My Mood: SL Join Date: 7/3/2006 (rejoin 7/16/2009) Client: Exodus, Dolphin, Firestorm | Text games will bring back feelings of nostalgia for some, so yeah, I see there is a niche market for it. Just like SL is a niche market. They aren't for everyone, of course, but hopefully enough to keep LL moving forward. |

Business: Hello Spacegirl Client: V3/Exodus | That would be... interesting, if true. Interactive fiction has definitely been seeing a resurgence, what with the Choice Of games, Echo Bazaar (not really a text adventure, but more than other browser games) and so on becoming popular. People have been getting IF onto Kindles, and I know of at least one project to bring IF games to iDevices. It still seems a little niche for a company to be taking on, but perhaps it's getting more exposure than I thought. Current IF creation tools have a fairly steep learning curve, but let you do a hell of a lot. I can't imagine that a tool developed for a phone OS is going to be very sophisticated. There are already things like Quest, which plans to go to the iDevice, so again, I'm not sure why LL would go this route. If it's true. edit: Oops, I spent too long writing this; I see it isn't true after all. Not surprised. |
