There is no need for you to get this defensive. Nobody actually asked you to apologize for anything. I know you didn't know, which is why I tried to explain what the problem is. The only reason I kept going is because you kept trying to rationalize the use of the term. Nowhere did I accuse you personally of continuing to use it or using it insultingly. I also don't see where my tone has been "harsh" -- I see it as being calmly explanatory. You're making this about you when it absolutely isn't. This is not personal at all. </derail> I remember there was a virtual world I tried... either Twinity or Kaneva or something, where they actual had it set up so you could upload an image of your real life face and basically make a photo-skin of yourself. Do you folks think that's cool, or creepy?

Business: Astalianda Client: Niran's | About the derail: I also didn't even -know- anyone could use that term about a real person. To my sheltered in-the-middle-of-nowhere Finnish self the word was associated -only- to SL or manga/anime of a certain sort and was generally more ...hermaphroditic-magical-people than anything else.Joshua, that story was absolutely sickening, but I'm glad you told it. Yegads. What is -wrong- with people? I learn so much on these forums. I'm serious, that's not any kind of a sarcastic remark in case the tone comes out wrong. Thank you. ...I feel like I should finish this with a tie-back-to-the-original-subject, hmm. Oh! I've used bobs on Sonya for so long (because I hated how the long hair glitched through the body) that a couple of springs ago I went and had a haircut in RL. A major haircut. From the waist to just above shoulders.

| I kinda went about the hair thing the opposite way... I cut my hair in RL because I needed a new look, then I started wearing it shorter in SL to match. The fact that I no longer have hair stabbing through me every time my avatar bends or moves its head is a huge plus, though. It's always been a pet peeve of mine. (Maybe mesh will help?) |

Mind you, I'm so used to the flexi-hair movement now that if the avatar is moving a lot or dancing or whirling about for whatever reason and the hair doesn't move, it looks strange. But for regular walking and standing about and calm AO movements the long mesh hair is pretty much perfect. Of course now I've used bobs and updos for years, so it's developed into a preference that won't change just because of more options, but it's really nice that the options are there!

The piercing the body, or the stiff mesh hair. I guess I'm so used to hands/arms/hair disappearing into the body that it doesn't bother me as much anymore. |

Wasabi Pills has some rigged mesh hair that lots of people have gone down to get. Unfortunately it doesn't fit my head *quite* right (close but not right) and since it's rigged I can't adjust it *at all*. But it doesn't look as stiff as non-flexi prim/sculpt hair does, even with that. Eboni made an animated ad here on SLU for Hucci which uses that hairstyle here: SLUniverse.com - Second Life Community - Current Advertisements You can see the hair "in action" as it were. It's the one with the teal dress. I assume the one with the purple dress uses mesh hair also but I don't recognize the style. I know the one in the teal dress is definitely from Wasabi Pills and is mesh, and doesn't have the "stiff" quality you imagine. I actually have problems with flexi hair (not enough to not wear it, but it's annoying) because it's generally TOO flexi, by a lot. You constantly look like you're walking in a wind tunnel. No matter how much Im dancing, my hair looks more like that mesh style than the kind that flies all over the place just jumping around.

My Mood: SL Join Date: 7/3/2006 (rejoin 7/16/2009) Client: Exodus, Dolphin, Firestorm | I'll have to check out the demos out then. I've spent way too much recently, so I have to cut back so I don't cut into my RL budget too much. Would be good to see the demos in action, as the hair in the ad doesn't look as bad as it sounded. |

Business: [Pink Fuel] | ![]() My avatar constantly changes because I'm always skinning and therefore take on whatever look the skin I am working on evokes. I have recently tried making my AV look similar to RL me but it's probably going to be temporary. Those of you that know me in-world know that I spend most of my time in my skybox, butt-naked and waddling around with the default newbie walk. I think I've flashed every friend by now

Hail Woz, the great and

| Looks at icon .... I guess not. The one time I tried I wound up having a slight problem with scale and needed to jump to enter buildings. Now I am more concerned with making my avatar how I see myself rather than accidents of appearance.

It is best to treat it like the n word. That is, some people may use it as a self-descriptor but most consider it an insult. It also has different meanings when said by someone about themselves (or possibly someone in the same social group) and when said by someone else.

There is a growing movement to use the term genderqueer, particularly among 20-somethings. Some trans people in SL will also deliberately mix their avatars .... like an obviously male avatar wearing a dress.
