Find a pair of modifiable shoes - flats or low heels work better
Take your foot up to til the "bone" of the ankle is smooth. Mine is 40
Try on shoe taking note of where skin shows
Create alpha to hide the skin
Mod the shoe to a wider proportion to make up for the wider foot.

I'll explain, but it's not exactly rational. I just find the idea of amputating a body part and replacing it with a prosthetic simply because I think it's 'ugly' to be a pretty repellant notion, even if we are just talking about pixels.

In other words, it grosses me out.

Honestly, I hate that most shoe makers seem to like no mod with a hud - I have several prim feet sets [ bare, and two pairs of shoes] and if I'm making them myself, matching is pretty easy - I can usually find the perfect shade for most lighting, and adding anklets when needed help with the joining area. I've even managed stockings.

I would love to find more creators making shoes that didn't require a HuD to match skin tones and weren't full of any kind of scripts.

I've been putting off figuring out how to make a hud for my shoes before sharing them, simply to make changing the skin faster - but I'd still leave them copy/mod simply so its easier to adjust them to your tastes. But I culd get the same affect by simply making each foot/shoe have a texture changing menu with the specifics for what texture to use where.

I don't assume that people prefer that because people seem willing to pay 1000+ lindens for a pair of shoes that isn't mod, but don't seem as willing to pay 100 for ones that are.

I usually wear boots or non-human feet. Prim human feet are too picky and a pain to adjust. It was pain enough adjusting the naughty bits.

And I'm still afraid of sculpty feet, I guess it's because a lot of people I see wearing them fail really badly at matching them to their skin tone(or their settings are different). I know it can be done well. Maybe it's also the fact that a lot of shoes with built in feet have ridiculously high heels so they look really painful. I need to find me some cute sandals.

Color Under Cursor only gives you an RGB value, which may or may not look right in different Windlight settings. I've had varying degrees of success trying to use it.

One of the reasons I love Tya's Pixelmode stuff is because she's a minimalist on scripts (the Fae sandals include 2 scripts, period) and she offers a notecard with the Hue/Sat/Light settings for a huge number of the most popular skins.

While it took me a while to get the hang of some of the other HUDs, I felt like I could get a reasonable match on her shoes in just a couple of minutes.

It'll never be perfect just because everybody's going to see things differently with all the different combinations of TPVs and WL settings. But she's come the closest, IMO.

When I used light skins I didn't have such a hard time,
but it seems much harder to match dark skins.

Rational or no, at least I can understand this. So I now feel I understand you better as a person Ann.

I guess for me, even horribly color matched prim feet look > than Linden feet. Even though I'm a stickler for detail, I generally I don't obsess on foot color matching unless it's REALLY bad, because everyones monitors are so different - I've spent hours trying to help a friend get their feet right only to find what matches on my screen doesn't match on theirs, or vice versa.

And anyways, I hate feet in RL, so I prefer closed toed shoes in and out of SL.

Prim-color tinting will never match in all lighting situations. The only way to make it perfect is to bake the color tint to the texture, so you can leave tinting on pure white. If you can, once it matches it'll match on all lighting situations, including anything Wind-light throws at you. Not many prim feet provide you with the white source textures, unfortunately.

(and the color tinting light bug is fixed, but only when atmospheric shaders are on)

Moderate knowledge of channel sliders in Photoshop. But you still need the textures on HD.

But I can do it, and I only have a degree in computer programming, not art.

Sorry but i disagree. If you are not wearing a white or very pale skin, for tanned skins is indicated to choose instead the white base the most similar texture preset (tone) for your skin because in this way variation on the prim or sculpt color is not so appreciable according to lighting.

I agree with you: I was using different terminology. You are correct it is better to use a toned texture to keep the prim tint white, so it will match in all lighting conditions. The moment you use the in-viewer prim-tinting, you make it vary depending on lighting conditions and it will never always match.

I'll just stick with wearin' boots n' sneakers for the most part. When I'm on a beach, it ain' feet I'm lookin' at anyway.

Gimp - its free and it handles some things better than PS, like anything with an alpha channel

And you can open psd files and use psd brushes in gimp just fine.

And for making seamless in photoshop, use offset under filters [I use both photoshop and gimp, each has different strengths]

I seem to remember some time ago, someone worked up a proposed fix for the smeary crotch... just a matter of realigning some vertices and it apparently didn't break any content either. Wish I knew where I saw that... maybe the JIRA.

Lord knows why LL hasn't done it themselves...
