Unhappy I’m losing my office

Well I’m losing my office space! After 5 years of having my own private office with a door and window I’m being moved to a cubical farm. They says it’s temporary but…it could be a year or longer. And I’m getting an assistant. That’s good news but my current office barely has room for me. I had some say in the layout of my new digs but I still wont have the privacy I currently have. So this may really hamper my forum cruising and SLing during the day.
Anyway….just curious who has their own office? Who works from home or sits in a cube?

In my office only the office management and the upper management have assigned tables, no one has a private room. Work cubicles are not solo stuff.

It has to do with the company atmosphere, except for the office management, no one really needs to stay put, we need flexibility and we shift from table to table a lot each work day depending on who we need to be working with at the time.

I have my own office, pretty neat, on one of the several corners of the building

I am a cube farm occupant.

Sorry you're losing your office. I've only had my own office once...most of my working life has been in a cubicle.

Aodhan, I worked at an Architect firm that was configured in a similar way. Teams were assigned and stations and table moved around as needed per project. I was design systems manger though so….I had my own office…LOL

I've always been a cube-farm person.
For the last few months, because of the type of project I'm on, I've been working from home.
But I will be back in cubes before long I'm sure.

I'm a cube-dweller working for a pharma corp. The offices at this place are only given to the 20% FIC tier.

It can be worse though.. when I first started working here, I only had a chair! No desk.. no cube.. just a chair in a small office with 4 other people. Desks were in short supply it seems during my first week. Oh, and it took them about 2 months for them to find a work computer for me.. I had to do all my work on a P2-300 laptop that I had to bring in from home!

One day I hope to work my way to an Officle (essentially a cubicle with a door), but that's likely still a good time away.

Last job I had in an office where the company put workers in cubicles, I quit. I'd started working there in a cubicle five years earlier and had clawed and lied and cheated my way up to a real officer. Then, the whole company was moving and only the really higher-ups were getting private offices, and these were small like toilet stalls, too. The cubicles most of us were to get were those wide open design ones so that the only privacy existed between your legs, and not even much there.

These days, I have an office with windows, and I even smoke cigarettes there. It's called home. I could never deal with cubicles.

Work from home now, last job I was in a cube. I really have a hard time working when I can't have some quiet and people keep interrupting me.

Hate.

My office is Kentucky was spacious and included a window that looked past a light pole situated just in front of a doorway extension on the building behind it so that people seemed to appear and disappear as they walked behind the pole.

Now I'm in a large room with thirteen servers and Jarod sitting across the expansive tables we've set up as desks. It's not totally private; but we do have a door with one of those mechanical pushbutton locks.

When the new building is finished in March 08, I'll be back in a private office with a window and my own freaking door! The servers will have their own room and Jarod will have his. That'll seem strange; I can get used to it. The only downside is that the boss will be down the hall instead of another building across campus. He does actually work though so tends to stay our of our hair as long as our jobs are done.

I hope your situation is truly temporary. Keep us posted.

Sorry you are losing your office.

I work in an office when I'm in my work building and I also split time and work from home. So either way I have access to the forums. I could probably even log in to SL but then I would never get any work done. So I limit myself to the forums only a few times a day.

I'm responsible for a region, so I have two offices.

One is a pretty nifty office with a window... and even room for a small confrence table so I don't have to grab a room to schedule a meeting.

The other one (which I'm sitting at as I type this) is a shared cube, since I'm only there one day a week. To this day people continually walk by, peer in, and give me looks like "Who the fuck are you, and why are you here?"

I just angle my laptop away from outside view, connect up to the public wifi... and get my forum fix

I have a home and an office space at the main building. Since getting all set up at home, they rarely see me there and when I do go I just sit in the reception area and gossip with the girls and don't go in my office. They will probably eventually ask me to move to a cubicle and let someone use the space that is there more anyday now.

When I was working IT I had a little cubicle in the very back of the building. The cubicle across from me was a spare CAD station nobody ever used, and the adjacent ones were just used to hold printers, papercutters, etc. So I had my own little hovel in the back corner of the administrative floor.

My supervisor didn't care what I did, when I was issued my workstation the first thing he told me to do was install Trillian on it.

And I'm pretty sure the owner of the company (when he was actually there) just thought the IRC session I kept open was the server console.

I miss that job

And I'm jealous of those of you who manage to work from home. I could never keep myself organized enough to stick to a self-arranged schedule.

Cubicle, but it's in a space shared with only three others and we all get along, so it's not so bad.

I work from home, although this may eventually switch to "several thousand feet off the ground at any given time".

In my experience, working from home has resulted in situations where I would get maybe 10 minutes of work done in a week, or slam two months of work out during a week's worth of overnighters.
