I was not referencing FB or SL specifically. I was pointing out the need to be anonymous sometimes *everywhere* you are online. There are less life threatening examples, certainly, but the point is the ability to speak freely without repercussions depends to some degree on remaining anonymous.

Facebook as a marketing tool. Specifically, the idea that you can get something for nothing. If you don't have metrics for your advertising, why would you waste your efforts?

LL have never been able to advertise properly. It doesn't seem to be in their business plan. Absolutely crazy but years and years of history seem to prove that. Most of the time it was word of mouth or the media advertising. When that dried up they focussed on Facebook and Twitter, and having a short affair with "be a vampire" on the back of the Twilight movies. It has never been targeted in the right places, if targeted at all.

Yes, they do this regularly and it infuriates me.

Like I said before, there's enough that Facebook as a company does that really pisses me off, and disabling SL accounts doesn't rank very high on my list. Having to rework these settings every few months pisses me off, and I've considered disabling my account a number of times in the past.

Unfortunately it's become a major source of attention generation for my novel series so I'm stuck in this masochistic relationship until the next Big Thing comes around and everyone jumps ship for it.

Therefore requiring people to make public statements under that identity creates a chilling effect. It blocks communication. For a site that pretends it has something to do with journalism that's just fucking stupid.

Yeh, I know, I used to be young and financially secure without dependents and could afford to not give a fuck too. But even then I was able to understand everyone wasn't like me.

Facebook comments don't do that unless you ask them to. It's an option when you post.

I left techcrunch when it switched over, after making my opinion clear on the matter. I have, do and will continue to fight or protest against the creep of "real life identity required" on sites that don't require that information, especially if that is based on the abomination that is facebook connect and facebook comments.

Do I have a problem with using facebook itself? Nope. I have a RL account there to keep in touch with old university friends. I also have a Linkedin account for professional connections. In both cases I'm very careful about the data about myself that I put in them.

It is not these sites themselves or their requirements for RL identities for themselves that I disagree with, its their attempt to spread the RL identities to other sites that don't require them.

Yes, Facebook is evil and we all hate it. If you want to talk about that, it's another discussion entirely. How evil Facebook is has nothing to do with people wilfully joining it, wilfully registering as their SL identities, wilfully disregarding their ToS stipulating that such registration is not allowed, then crying about their freedom and inalienable rights being infringed when Facebook deletes them.

I've commented on Facebook in a total of two threads; both of which were responding to people complaining about not being able to register as their SL accounts.

Mission indeed. What could I extrapolate your "mission" into from every acerbic post about how people are not as intelligent as you, are not doing things as well as you, are not as clever as you, are using the wrong software as you, are building the wrong computers from you, on and on and on, like my grumpy great grandfather who used to scream at Judge Judy before falling into a marijuana nap at 3:30 PM?
